Fast Pass+ Tutorial?

Okay, so apparently not going to WDW for three years is kind of like never having gone before. After four trips in ten years, I thought I was an expert. How silly am I?

I've been reading about everyone's miserable experiences with Fast Pass+. Is there a thread anywhere that provides some sort of a Fast Pass+ tutorial? I don't trust that the WDW website will be giving me all of the info I need. What is the real deal?

I would greatly appreciate knowing the ins and outs ahead of time, because right now, I feel like I'm lost in the sauce.
