Fast pass times...is Disney strict about the return time?

From recent experience, Disney has been strict with FP+ return times. I am guessing this is because of the Magic Bands having to be scanned.

Your magic band is scanned. We saw people get told that they had to wait another 5, 10, 15 minutes until it was time last week.

The only exceptions I saw to the "grace period" on my past trip were family parties with slightly overlapping fastpass times. Got myself into Splash Mountain once 10 minutes early because my family's passes all got in green and the cast member saw them scan in and saw my return time was imminent so they let me pass.
