Fantasmic Dining Package Problems

Everyone needs to calm down and take a deep breath ...

THERE IS NO MORE SPECIAL ENTRANCE. This is NOT a temporary situation. This was done as a cost-cutting measure ... fewer CMs are needed to staff the current configuration than were required to staff the special entrance.

This set-up does NOT render the Fantasmic Dinner Package useless. It is still very very helpful.

I went in February, and the idea of the new set-up very much concerned me, just like it's now concerning all of you. I was in Disney's Hollywood Studios twice before my Fantasmic Dinner Package ADR. I made it my business to ask as many relevant CMs as I could about the set-up ... these are people who work the Fantasmic theater and crowd, not people at an information booth or a food stand. I got identical answers from all the CMs I asked, and believe me, I asked enough questions that I embarrassed and annoyed my wife (she wanted to pretend she wasn't with me).

They said as long as you are at the theater entrance by 45 minutes before the show, you will be guaranteed a seat in the reserved section. At that point, they explained, there won't be a line ... the entrance will have been open for some time, and all you have to do is just walk in and go up to the special FDP podium at the top of the amphitheater and show them your FDP voucher.

It worked exactly this way for us. It was a 7:00 p.m. show. We had a 4:25 p.m. ADR at Mama Melrose's. Our waiter was very nice and attentive, but rather slow (it was him, not the kitchen ... it took him close to forever to take our dessert order and then also to get us our check and our FDP voucher, etc.). The voucher clearly stated that we would relinquish our rights to a reserved seat if we arrived at the theater fewer than 45 minutes before showtime.

We got outta there by a few minutes after 6, and we high-tailed it to the theater entrance ... we got there by a few minutes before 6:15 p.m. You have to walk the equivalent of a couple of city blocks from the entrance (on Sunset Blvd.) to the actual entrance of the amphitheater ... you enter at the back, which is also the top. We handed our voucher to the CM at the podium ... she ripped it in half and handed one piece back to me, and showed us along the way to the roped-off section all the way to the right.

There were plenty of reserved seats still there ... plenty. But there appeared to be NO SEATS remaining in the rest of the theater. I made conversation with the people next to us, who happened to get there a lot earlier than we did. They told me there was an announcement around 6:00 p.m. that the show was STANDING ROOM ONLY.

At 6:30 p.m., two CMs removed the rope dividing our section from the rest of the theater, and an ocean of standees flooded into the section at that point. No seats left by about 6:32 p.m. [PLEASE NOTE: This is totally normal. The procedure was EXACTLY THE SAME when they had the special FDP entrance ... the removal of the rope 30 minutes before showtime was always a part of Fantasmic ... it is NOT new, it is NOT a result of the single entrance set-up]

LESSON LEARNED: If I DIDN'T have the FDP and showed up at the theater at 6 o'clock and perhaps earlier than that, we wouldn't have had a seat (standing-room-only was announced at 6, but the condition could have been present much before that). People started lining up outside the Sunset Blvd. entrance at 5 p.m. (yes, 2 hours before showtime). While others were waiting in line, we were enjoying a pretty decent meal.

Two hours before showtime, there is a line. But they open the theater (at least for the first show of the night) 90 minutes before showtime. In the time interval spanning from 90 minutes before the show to 45 minutes before the show, the theater absorbs that entire line. By the time you can show up 45 minutes before showtime, THERE IS NO LINE ANYMORE. You just walk right in. And you walk right in and you have seats waiting for you.

The FDP worked out very very well for me. It made the difference between standing and having a seat.

I, too, have read of isolated problems with CMs not enforcing the reserved seating area. These are RARE problems, not common problems.

The fact that there is not a separate entrance is meaningless. It doesn't change the rules or the follow-through. Even with the separate entrance, you still had to be there 45 minutes in advance. So now you go through the same entrance as everyone else ... doesn't change a thing.

I have had a friend return from (a very wet) vacation in WDW this week. She said that she had this package, and was told to join the regular line, but go to the front of it. She said that once there she showed her voucher to a cast meber, there was a roped off section on the right hand side of the regular waiting crowd, and she was allowed to walk to the front of this clear section and enter the seating area. This roped off line was also being used by souvenir sellers she said.
I don't understand your friend's details.

There is no need to go to the front of any line.

With the FDP, you can show up as late as 45 minutes before the show and still get in the reserved seating section. By 45 minutes before the show, there shouldn't be a line anymore. People may start lining up 2 hours before the show, and the entrance opens about 90 minutes before the show. During that 45 minute span that the entrance is open, the entire line filters through.

By the time you show up 45 or 55 minutes before the show, there should be no line anymore. You can just walk in. You are not alone, but there are dozens of other people just walking in, also. The entrance path is several blocks long, and at that "late" time, the people you're walking with aren't in a queue, you're just all walking down a path (for those of you familiar with the park, it's a much larger version of walking down the path towards Rock 'n' Roller Coaster ... a lot of people are walking in that direction but you aren't queued up).

Anyway, when you reach the rear of the theater, it's only there where you split off from the others. You go to a podium to the right, everyone else just spills into the top of the theater. There is no gauntlet to run.

There is no line to go to the front of. If you are lined up with everyone in a huge line, you got there too early, and you shouldn't have bothered with the FDP to begin with.

While I agree with virtually all of Eric's (CleveRocks) post, the paragraph above is not the case every night.

There CAN be a backed-up line at 45 min. before the show.
If the park is packed (and that has been happening a lot this year)
there can be so many guests trying to crowd into F! that they will have filled the walkway to the theater, even after the theater seating has been depleted for that show.
Some guests even decide to simply stand-in-place in the walkway and wait
for the second show... even though the first show has yet to begin.

So, if you are at DHS on a very busy evening (I shudder to think about the summertime crowds this year)
if you HAVE the Dining Plan, you should arrive at the F! gates at least an HOUR before F! show-time, to make sure you can get to the theater in time to get your seats.

As always, things can be different on different nights, even during the same trip.

If seeing a particular show is IMPORTANT to you, err on the side of caution, and arrive a bit "too early."
Better than being a bit "too late."

I just tried the page several times and I'm getting, "Page Not Found- 404 Error
The page you requested could not be found." Maybe Disney has hired people to watch the Dis... spooky... :scared:

Wow, that is spooky! I can't get back to it through the link I posted or by performing the search function on disneyworld.com I used to find the page in the first place! I'm glad I copied and pasted their wording into my post!!

Actually, it looks like there was just a typo at the end of the link you posted; I removed a couple extra extraneous characters at the end, and was able to pull up the page you quoted using the link below:

Yes. I have copied the info/image below:

Here is an enlarged area of the INCORRECT info stating to arrive at Oscar's...

FDPInfo-Bad_2.jpg

--------------------------

This is yet another example of the outdated info posted on the Disney Website.

The listings of the EMH Attractions is (notoriously) inaccurate, too.
They sometimes take months to update them and, even then, the list
is usually incomplete or otherwise lacking.

CleveRocks: Thanks for the info! There is only 2 things that raises concern. And not from your posting, from WDW operations. 1. If you arrive at the entrance in the one and only line 45 minutes before show time, there are other guests waiting in line. Some trying to get into the present show, some already forming a line for the second show. So it may take some time to get to the top of the theatre. At that point, the seating will have already opened up. Even though you were there 45 minutes prior to show time. 2. The fact that WDW CM's booking the F! package are STILL (I called this morning) telling guests to enter at Oscar's 45 minutes before show time and the email that I sent earlier this week are still saying its Oscar's is frustrating. Even if the wait staff at the restaurant is telling guests where to go when they are handed their voucher, it would make me second guess where to go. Personally, IMO there should be a separate line. Even if it is at the main entrance.

I have copied/pasted the MK area below-

The attractions I have highlighted in YELLOW are not currently open
for AM EMH.

I can understand if they don't "un-list" Space Mtn. during the Re-furb.

But, that's not all...
Some of the attractions that ARE normally open are NOT listed-

Tomorrowland-
Tomorrowland Transit Authority
(Yes, TTA is in Refurb, but so is Space Mtn. which IS on the list)

And, missing from the list in Fantasyland-
Mad Tea Party (Tea Cups)
Snow White's Scary Adventure.
(I have no idea why those are not on the list.)

But wait, there's more...
Haunted Mansion
Big Thunder Mountain RR
Splash Mountain

THESE three attractions ARE currently open for MK AM EMH.
They may be permanent,
OR they may drop off after
Space Mtn. and TTA return and
Tomorrowland may re-open again for AM EMH.
Even then, will the WDW Website post the correct info?

Only time will tell. ;)

We had the FDP for H&V on TH 5/14. Our waiter made a point of telling us that we needed to be at the entrance off of Sunset Blvd between 60-90 minutes before the show and that, as long as we were at that entrance by 60 minutes before, we would be guaranteed a seat, even if the walk to the actual theater took us some time after that. I recall that the card they gave us for admission also had these times, as well as the location of the entrance. We were already familar with the new entrance, as we used it with the FDP in Dec.

We ended up not staying for the show due to rain, but I understand that the show was performed that night. -- Suzanne

haha, i think that sounds like a good idea!

I see what you are saying - a bit like that walk jodie foster has to make to get to hannibal lecters cell at the start of silence of lambs!!

However this is how disney are dealing with FDP voucher holders, so you just have to run the gauntlet I suppose and hope that cast members will explain to people on the other side of the line and ask them to put down their pitchforks and extinguish their flaming torches.

You could put a towel over your head and run I suppose?

Yes that was us! Our daughter was the one who thought you were Ariel!! :) Hope you had a great vacation!

I think it's so cool that you both remember crossing paths :)

This F! thing is such a MESS. How hard can it be to just pay a couple of CMs to reopen the VIP entrance?

LMAO!!! :rotfl2:

Thanks Robo and CleveRocks for your very helpful information on F! and the dinner package. We have always done the package in the past and found it to be very helpful. With all the scary stories recently of how the new package works, or rather doesn't, I was wondering whether to keep our MM dinner package for August. It seems like the package is still worth having and will help to minimize at least some of the wait. I do hope the part about a "guaranteed" seat as long as you're there 60 min. prior is truly their policy. This is how it should be or else why get the package?:confused3
Thanks again for the info! :thumbsup2

I don't understand your friend's details.

I have spoken with my friend again, and she tells me categorically that when she and her family got to the show, there was a line, and she was told by a CM to go to the right of the line, straight passed those waiting, and then she was directed into the reserved seating. She can't remember how far out it was, but she thinks no more than an hour before the show.

I now understand ... Robo pointed out such a scenario. I now understand the reality of the situation at times.

I can't believe that my ranting post has generated so many responses! I had no idea that the lack of the seperate entrance was such a hot topic...obviously, since I didn't even know they took the seperate entrance away ahead of time!!

Good luck to everyone who has FDP ressies this summer. I can't imagine what the crowds will be like after my experience earlier this month.

As promised, here is the email reply I received. My first email was asking where to enter (I wanted to see what WDW was telling guests). I was told Oscars. So I responded that it was known that Oscars was no longer the entrance. The next email response:

Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World Resort.

You will be happy to know that there is only one entrance for Fantasmic!
show. The entrance by Oscar's has not been available for some time. We ask that all guests arrive at least 30 minutes prior to showtime for seating.

For accurate and up-to-date information, may we suggest you visit the
official website for Walt Disney Word: disneyworld com

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Please include your full name, E-Mail address, and reservation number if applicable on all correspondence.

Sincerely,

I responded to this email with the link on Disney's website to the F! page where it still says Oscars. I'll keep you updated.

I hope that some of the WDW folks reads these boards. Its hard to bring to their attention mis-info that CM's on the phones quote. But this is posted on their official website!
http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/parks/hollywood-studios/dining/fantasmic-dinner-package/

I'm not talking down to the CM's, but when a change is made, maybe upper mgmt should communicate the info better and update their public, official, online info.
