Our planned trip in December includes just one day at MGM, and we had hoped to see both the Osborne lights and Fantasmic. However, I see on the Disney site that Fantasmic starts at 6:00 p.m., and the Osborne lights are on from 6:00 to 7:00. So my question is - how long is Fantasmic? Is it possible to see both of these on the same night, by doing Fantasmic first and then heading over to see the lights once it is over? Or will we have to pick one or the other?

Yes, it is possible. If you have the fantasmic dinner package, see the osborne lights at 6pm before going to the show. If you don't have the package, see the lights after the show. They may stay open until 8pm (according to the official disney website calandar.)

We just went and Fantasmic was one hour before the park closed. We were in the very furthest seats away from the exit and we still had time to find our stroller (a challenge!) and make it over to the lights for all the time we wanted. Because we weren't sure, we also were there when they turned them on, but we rushed through because we were so worried about missing Fantasmic. It was definitely better afterwards, as we had time to just look around and enjoy them. I don't even think I saw any CMs - just Photopass people - so there was no pressure at all to rush through them. My kids loved the snow! The new "dancing" lights thing is fun too - not a big deal, but a fun new change from previous years... Enjoy!

We've been there a couple of times when Fantasmic was scheduled at the park closing time. Most of the crowd headed over to the Osbourne lights after Fantasmic. We were given plenty of time to look around, and the CM's didn't rush anyone at all. When you're done, the CM's just direct you to the park exit.

The Osborne Lights attraction presented an unusual
problem for MGM.
When they were "acquired" by Disney from the Osborne
family (not OZZIE, BTW) there was a huge amount of
national publicity about them.
Disney got a lot of "mileage" out of having them and
they needed to DISPLAY them for lots of guests to see
(after dark).
But...
Even in the winter months, it simply does not get
really DARK in Florida until about 6pm.
So the lights can't be properly viewed until that
time.
(They simply are NOT a daytime or even "regular hours"
attraction).
And the MGM park usually closes (except EMH) only an
hour or so after dark.

Since Disney spends a major (MAJOR) amount of time and
money to set-up, promote, fund the electricity and
CM's and (after the holidays) remove and store these
hundreds of thousands of lights, they needed a way
that guests could actually VIEW them.
(Otherwise, what's the POINT?)

So since, at sunset, MOST (up to 10,000) guests in MGM
are SITTING IN THE FANTASMIC! THEATER and can't SEE
the lights as it gets dark... AFTER the show, the CM's
actually ENCOURAGE the exiting crowds from Fantasmic!
to go over and see the Osborne Lights.
Even though the rest of the park is closed, the lights
are in full glory, and there are even some concessions
open for refreshments.

The info that keeps getting posted (same one or two
posters, by the way) that says guests were stopped
from going to see the OLights after Fantasmic! is
accurate as well.
There are some nights when the OLights are being used
for a private "event" and regular guests are not
allowed in.
You simply will not KNOW about this unless you stop at
Guest Relations that day and ask if the OLights will
be available after Fantasmic!

As for how late?
If Fantasmic! is at 7pm, then its over at 7:25pm, most
guests are out of the theater by 7:50pm and headed to
the Osborne Lights.
I'd estimate that they would keep the OLights open for
a hour-plus, so, say 9:15pm-9:45pm would be the
approx. wrap-up.

We have done this in the past and haven't had any problems getting from one end to the other to see the lights. You should even have time to catch a couple of the dancing sequences.

I have an early FDP reservation at 4pm. I am planning on being at the Osbourne lights at 6pm and then heading over to Fantasmic at 6:30pm for the &pm show.

Thank you, everyone! I'm delighted to hear that we'll be able to see both of the "light shows!"

just wanted to confirm what everyone else has been saying.........we were there last week...saw fantasmic at 7 and still had plenty of time to enjoy the osborne lights afterwards...park closing was at 8 but we didn't actually leave until almost 9 and never felt rushed to leave.

Have a great time!!!
