Myself and DW on our 12th trip to the world
D S on his 5th last one in 96 when he was 16
DDIL her 1st trip
Up early again this morning as today was shuttle launch and we had tickets for this never to be forgotten experience
. The info with the tickets had stressed early departure from the hotel and to allow extra time for traffic
. We headed onto the Beeline as usual, but the traffic didn't seem as bad as I thought it might have been, and it was only when we were approaching the Astronauts Hall of Fame that the traffic started to slow but still moving along nicely.
We had been given an arrival slot of 10.30 and though we were there just before 10 so was everyone else. We had our parking permit displayed and were waved through to the car park. We have been to Kennedy many times before and had never seen the car park so full. We walked to the entrance and joined the queue to get through security, once past this we went to check on the flight status. Everything good to go.
We went out to where the tour buses where lined up to take us out to the first stop on the tour. On the way to the Saturn V site the driver announced the launch had been postponed due to a faulty fuel gauge, everyone on the bus groaned
Dissapointed, you bet, still we are here now so continue the tour.Last time DS was here the Saturn V was sitting outside, so it seems even bigger when inside. It fills the hall. DDIL was amazed. I had thought she might not enjoy Kennedy as it is not everyones cup of tea but the whole thing was an eye opener for her. After the tour three of us did the Shuttle Launch Experience DW declined. I had seen them starting to build this 2 years ago and was looking forward to riding it. It shook us about and made our cheeks flutter but wasn't too bad.
The second dissapointment was the lack of refreshments facilities after the no go was announced.
They had tents filled with food and drink ready to feed and water the crowds but didnt open them. But people were still looking for somewhere to eat. Milas was swamped as was the food court next to the shop.If you do attend for a future launch it would probably be better to take a cooler with food and drink and leave it in the car as they do not allow you to take it into the complex. Go out when you are hungry and then go back in suitably replenished.I think they still do the hand stamp for re-entry. We were told the shuttle may take off on Friday but we have a prior engagement and would not be able to go. We are off to Discovery Cove.
