Hi guys. In a couple of weeks we are having an outdoor family picture taken. It will be about 15 of us. We're having a problem deciding how we should dress. I'm thinking jeans and have everyone wear a white or off white shirt or sweater. What do you guys think? I'm so bad when it comes to decisions like this! Can you share with me what worked well for your past photos? TIA! :)

That sounds nice and clean. We did a family pic with everyone in white tops and khakis which I thought looked wonderful.

I have a neighbor that had a big family photo taken. The Grandma bought everyone purple polo shirts and khaki pants...my friend says it looks like a Lands End ad! It does! We did one once and told everyone to wear red, black, and/or white. It turned out very nice. I've seen lots of families wear denim with white or red for shirts.

Good luck!

We haven't tried to match a large group like that but when we've done pictures with just the 3 of us I've picked 1 major color that all of us have on and then other colors that compliment that. For instance 1 time DH wore a denim shirt and khaki pants, DD wore a denim jumper and dark pink top and I wore a denim skirt and light pink top. The picture came out great. I'd be more inclined to do something like this rather than have everyone matching 100% because not everyone looks good in white, or black for that matter. Have fun with the picture. I'm sure it'll be something you'll treasure.

We've had a few family pictures before... it's either we're all dressed up... or just casual. I personally wouldn't want to be uniformed. I like to see varieties... We have teenagers.. young teens.. college students.. over the hills... my kids in early grade school... I like to see varieties that fits their age and their personalities. So... the pictures always turn out nice and colorful. Besides... some of us do not look good in purple or orange.. or certain colors.

I'm guessing this will be several branches of family? Maybe have all wear jeans and then each branch wear a color like "X family" wears blue shirts and "Y family" red shirts and "Z family" in yellow. Or use a pastel color for each family.

Yes. It will be our family, my brothers family, my sister's family and my mom. Your idea was my DH's suggestion too. The more I think about it, it sounds like a pretty good idea.

I like SleepyMom's idea...we had a family picture taken a few years ago with DH's family and it came out terrible! Nobody wanted to coordinate colors or even the style of dress (some came very casual and others in dress clothes)...not a pretty picture :crazy2:

A couple of years ago just our immediate family had pictures done....we all wore blue jeans, the girls wore light blue tops (not the same blue top, just the same color) and DH wore a white button down shirt...it came out great!

The photography studio we use suggested khakis or jeans and white shirts. Looked really nice.

we did our immediate family in jeans and white shirts. It came out ok but I should have chosen another color shirts, it would of looked better against the dark background. We did an "all the grandkids" pic for my DM last Christmas (all the moms agreed to not repeat for at least 10 yrs, 2 yr olds are just such fun!). There were 9 kids total. Since it was a xmas gift we put the 3 boys in green/green-white shirts, and the girls all wore red. Nobody had the exact same thing on, but still close enough that noone's outfit outshone anyone elses. My db's did this for his inlaws, but had all family member's included (spouse's and a dog). Each family wore a different color of the same Hawiian print shirt. That also came out nice.

We did a fall extended family portrait a few years back and the photographer suggested as sleepymom suggests. We all wore denim pants and then the three families chose dark colors because pastel wouldn't look right with the fall background. We did forest green, cranberry and offwhite/vanilla. They are beautiful. I think coordinating is much better than individual "chaos".

We did Navy and White in our family portrait on the beach. Some had white pants or navy, some had white shirts or navy, some had navy and blue stripes. It came out really nice and nautical looking, just how we wanted!

I've seen several large fmaily photos where everyoneis wearing khaki pants and a white t-shirt and it looks great. you really focus on the faces when everyone is dressed alike.

DD and I did that for our family portrait once a few years ago. We both wore blue jeans and black sweaters. I think the pictures came out really neat. :)

My favorite family picture I ever saw was at a photo shop on the beach in New Jersey. The mom and dad had on one color polo and white shorts, each child and their spouse/kids had on another color polo and white shorts. The polos were all pastel colors and the shot was taken on a beach by some large boulders. It was spectacular.

We did a family picture outside and everyone wore black tops and khakis and it turned out nice. If you are taking it where the trees might have turned colors you might want to consider that into any color scheme-like if you wear pink the reds and oranges in the background might look bad.

We did a family picture in a studio a couple months ago and Dh and I wore black suits, DH had on a silver tie, DS13 had a black/gray sweater, DD10 wore a dress that was black velvet on top and red on the bottom and DS10 wore a black/red sweater. It turned out nice. I personally prefer darker colors in studio portraits.

I love khaki pants and white shirts except for that I'm very pale and look dead when I wear that. If your family is made up of dark-complected people, I think that would be great. Otherwise, I'd pick a few complementary colors for shirts and have everyone wear them with khakis or jeans.

I like what some of the others have suggested about coordinating colors.
The best portraits I've seen of multi-families (just kids and parents looks great with "uniforms", but not so nice with a whole bunch of people), have been tri-color, but mixed. Like all warm colors........red, orange and yellow........all cool.....blue green and purple.........or any color with acouple of neutrals like black/white, white/khaki, black/khaki................

I think it would be more interesting NOT to have each family pick one color.

We did ours a couple of years ago. Each branch of the family had their own color. It worked out, our problem was the stoned photographer
