Family of 6 visits the Mouse - **NEW Day 8 - MK**

Loved your birthday shirts! How creative. :thumbsup2 What a nice way to spend your birthday - eating through the countries. The eggrolls are also my favorite! What great kids you have in your family that they'd be willing to wear the "flowery" T-shirts for you. Everyone should have a lot of attention on their birthday so congratulations! What a special day you had.

everyone looks great in the shirts, even Hercules! Way to go friend of mom! They are wonderful. Happy belated birthday to you! Ok now bring on more report! (and its NEVER too long!)

Anxiously awaiting the next installement! Every morning (before I start my endless work day) I sit down with my cup of java and look forward to the few reports I read. Yours being one of them.

Please hurry! Can't wait for the next day!

Day 7 - Beaches & Cream, Boardwalk and Baby Hercules

This was our second day off out of 10 and we were definitely in need of it! Unfortunately, the smoke alarm in the house was beeping every 26 seconds all night and none of us really slept much. The location of the smoke alarm was on the peak of our 20 foot living room ceiling and it was impossible to get to - even though we were ready to blast a hole through the ceiling to make it stop. None of us slept much at all so we got up slightly crabby. Although, at one point during the night when I guess I did sleep, DD woke up, stood ON the bed and started screaming, “STOP! STOP!” By the time I registered what was happening and was convinced DD was being abducted, DD was laying back down again sleeping like a baby. I stared and her and thought - are you kidding me? I had to catch my breath because I was almost hyperventilating because she scared the CRAP out of me. Just as I laid back down to try to go back to sleep - which I knew wouldn’t be easy because my heart was literally beating out of my chest - BEEEEEEEEEEP went the smoke alarm. Not a good night! Although, I have to admit, a bad night in Disney is still better than a good night back at home!

We all walked around that morning like zombies all complaining about the lack of sleep and the *#(^@! smoke alarm but once we walked outside and realized what an absolutely gorgeous day it was, plus the fact that we were in Disney - we all snapped out of our moods pretty fast. It really is hard to be crabby - and stay crabby - in Disney!

After hearing so much about Beaches & Cream (from the Dis, of course) we decided to try it for lunch today. Because we had a few hours to kill before we had to leave and because it was such a gorgeous day, we all decided to attempt to get some sun. However, one of the drawbacks of renting one of these houses is the pool takes up the entire back yard - so unfortunately (for the neighbors) we had to sun in the little tiny patch of grass in the front yard. Yeah, it looked pretty ridiculous. The kids actually had to lay in the driveway because there was only enough room for three people in the grass - DM, DS and me. People that would drive by were laughing at us (couldn’t figure out why) and I really wanted to hold up a sign that said, “we’re from Minnesota - give us a break!” but I just tried not to make eye contact with anyone. I’d post pictures of us, but trust me, you wouldn’t want to see it.

After our humiliating sunning time was over, we all got ready to go to the Yacht & Beach Club. Oh yeah, we called the house people to complain about the *#(^@! smoke alarm and they (pretty quickly) sent a little man with a big ladder and he replaced the battery - just like that - and the beeping stopped! I asked him if he could either leave his ladder or a missle launcher (his choice) just in case another battery decides to die at 2:00 a.m. He didn’t seem amused. Neither were we.

Yacht & Beach Club bound were we! Nice place! I really liked it a lot and we had lots of great picture moments. Here are a few...

We ate at Beaches & Cream and it was pretty good -not great, but good. Onion rings were out of this world. DM and I did a halfsie with cheeseburger (cuz we heard the burgers were so good) and the philly cheesesteak. Neither were anything to write home about - good, just not great?!?!? I’m really not all that picky either - I hope I’m not painting that picture. I just think that when you hear people raving about places so much, you really do expect out of this world food and it just wasn’t. Fun place though but it was loud. While we were there, a few people ordered the “Kitchen Sink” dessert which consists of like a whole gallon of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, coffee and mint chocolate chip ice cream, smothered in every topping they have, plus an entire can of whipped topping. A whole can!!! It comes in a sink-looking bowl too - it’s very cute but I can’t imagine anyone ever finishes it. Not to mention the fact that that particular dessert is $22.00!

When we were done eating, the girls wanted to do a little site seeing so we loaded up the boys with cash to spend in the arcade while we walked over to the Boardwalk. I fell in love with the whole Boardwalk area. Talk about peaceful and serene! It was sooo beautiful! I loved the shopping. I loved the look. I just loved the whole feel. We all managed to buy a few things here - me a(nother) t-shirt, DD bought the CUTEST Mickey ring (which one of the stones fell out the first day we were back), DS bought a sweatshirt (I think) DM probably bought out the store. My mom has a problem with buying stuff - she buys too much of it - and I have a little bit of that in me too, which scares me because DM has the funds for it and ummm... I don’t. I need to find a sugar daddy! No, I’m kidding - kinda.

Anyway, it was an absolutely gorgeous day and we really took the time to smell the flowers and just relax. While DM and DS were still in the store shopping, DD and I stood at the edge of the boardwalk and looked over into the pond? lake? and watched the fish swim around and even saw a couple turtles and again I thought... if I were ever to come back as a fish or turtle, this is definitely where I’d want to live. What a great life. It was just such a wonderful day and it made me so grateful to be where I was at that moment. I just know DD is thinking the same thing...

The boys finally spent all their money and we all met up and decided to ride one of those bicycles built for 6! While I was filling out the papers for the bicycle, I had to put down our names and ages. Gulp. It was first time I saw my name in print with a 40 next to it. It hurt. But I did it. But I didn’t like it. It looked ugly. I’ll get over this 40 thing eventually - probably when I’m turning 50.

While we were getting ready to hop on the bicycle, this small family (mom, dad, one child - I’d guess he was 8 or so?) pulled up to us to return their rented bike. The little boy saw that we were renting one so he warned us about this “hill” in one spot as you ride about the Boardwalk. We feined interest, thanked the little boy for the warning, sized up their family, sized up our family and knew - or should I say “assumed” it wouldn’t be an issue. Hill, schmill. There were 5 of us riding the bike for cripes sake and three of them teenagers - boys yet - no problem, right? Yeah, hold on.

Me, being the baby control freak that I am (but not nearly as bad as DM) took the driver’s seat, which controlled the brake and the steering. We merrily went on our way after the CM gave us the whole lecture on all the rules - it’s a one-way boardwalk (for bicycles), don’t speed, don’t drink and drive, don’t run with scissors, etc. Here we are...

We started going around and passed by one wedding and it made me think how wonderful it would be to get married there. Oh... to find someone who loves Disney as much as me AND who would want to get married there. Could it happen? I snapped out of my dreamy world and we continued on our little jaunt around the boardwalk. We passed a bunch of young, shirtless, tan, very studly boys playing volleyball in the sand and I almost snapped a picture of them but then I realized how young they were and I realized how wrong that would be - especially if one of their parents were anywhere near us - not to mention how mortified my daughter and both nephews would be if any of the young studs caught the crazy old lady snapping pictures of them so we moved on.

We passed by another wedding going on and again I went into dreamy land...oh to find... yeah, then we saw the hill coming up. It didn’t look bad at all. It’s just a little hill before a bridge. No problem. We all started really pedaling hard to get up speed to make it up the hill and as we were half way up the hill - there was that little family - with the little boy that warned us - staring at us - seeing if we’d make it and I was determined to - but we started losing steam - and we started to roll backwards - and dang if that little boy didn’t come and rescue us! He ran over to us (well, I kinda motioned to him to help us) and I was thinking he’d hop in so we could get a little more pedal power - oh no - he ran behind us - which scared the crap out of me because I was convinced we were going to back over him and I really didn’t want that on my conscience - not when it had been such a wonderful day - it would have kinda ruined it - but he was a baby Hercules. He ran behind us and started PUSHING US!

Okay, DS and I have a good excuse for not making it up that hill - we’re old (oooh... that hurt to say) but if I were any of our kids on that bicycle, I would been ashamed to have a little, tiny, boy push us up the hill!!!! He must have eaten his spinach that day. He got us to the top of the hill, we thanked him and his parents and we were on our way down the little/big hill with me braking every second because I was convinced we were going to go flying into a nice little family and again - it would have ruined the absolutely perfect day.

We got back to our starting point and decided to go around one more time - this time determined to make it up that hill - without the help of the little baby Hercules. We had our own on board (Hercules, that is.) We passed the one wedding still in progress and we all decided it looked way too serious - it didn’t look like they were having any fun - we moved on to the empty (sigh) volleyball area - I probably somehow sent the boys some type of subliminal message and scared them all away - we passed by the second wedding, which looked like they were having way more fun and back at that hill again.

We sized it up once more, got a running start and we made it up - all by ourselves! Enough exercise though. We’re on vacation - who wants to work up a sweat like this when you’re on vacation! We gladly brought the bicycle back - without managing to plow over any families and we sadly left the premises. I would love to hear from anyone who has stayed at the Boardwalk - it seems like paradise!

We made our way back to our house. The kids hopped back into the pool and me, DM and DS sat by the pool and read - and the three of us actually dozed off - until DS SNORED and woke us all up. It was funny. She really hates it when she does that. It was one of those head back, mouth completely open snores. It’s funny to me because I act like I never do it - they’ve just never caught me doing it - because I’m usually alone when it happens - and then I giggle to myself and wonder if that odd noise that just woke me up was a snore - from me.

Anyway, we sat there and talked about how much we really enjoyed the day and all realized how important those down days are. As much as I absolutely love to be at the parks, it’s the down days that sometimes create the best memories for us.

Up next - MK again.

HappyPlace - Now you can have your morning cup of java and enjoy (hopefully) the next installment. Thanks for sticking with me.

I'll be staying at Boardwalk Villa's next Easter, so I can let you know in a year. One of my co-moderator's TLinden is a DVC member and her home is Boardwalk. She probably can tell you a little more about it. But I know she loves it. Thanks for sharing.

Ahhh, now that was good reading material with my morning cup of Java. Thank you!

What a nice "refreshing" day it sounds like you guys had.... other than the exercise with the bike!

:surfweb:

I love your trip report!! With all of your details and pictures, it feels like I vacationed with you! I love it!! Can't wait for your next post!!

PS: My family has done the surrey bikes on the Boardwalk also. It was very funny. That first hill is a doosey! It looks much smaller than what it really is! The 2nd hill down by the Yacht Club is killer! A maintenance main in a golf cart actually towed us up the hill! :rotfl2: It was so much fun!!

(Oh, and by the way, if you ever happen to track fresh dog poop all through your house, I highly recommend leaving it sit for 10 days - it was all completed dried up and was actually very easy to clean up.)

I LOVE it, I think you need to send that little tip to Heloise :rotfl2:

Great report! I will be with you through the end the longer the better.

I only WISH I snuck back off to Disney! The next installment is done, except for the photo part - which is the really time consuming part. Thanks for sticking with me. I should be posting the next installment tomorrow... or Tuesday at the latest.

Have a great day all!

Subscribing :thumbsup2 You make me feel like I am there with you. What a great TR!

Here it was. Our last day at MK - and we don’t know when we’ll be back. That thought is rattling around in all our heads and we’re trying real hard not to show it - because we’ll all cry. That’s just the way we are (we, as in the adults, not the kids.) That’s what happens to you when you’re in Disney. I think part of the Disney “magic” is the fact that somehow Disney gets into your psyche and makes you a) never want to leave and b) yearn to come back and it truly is a yearning. As I sit here (at work - he-he) and type this, I picture all the people AT Disney at this moment and it kills me not to be there. I hate that. It’s not that I’m not happy with where I am (well, except for the fact that I’m at work) but I’d just rather be at Disney. Always.

Anyway... I realized that the thousand pictures or so that we had already taken were not nearly enough and I wanted to truly capture every last moment of the day so I started snapping...

I don’t understand why the kids get so mad when I tell them to smile every 10 seconds and pose for a picture?!?!? One day, I know they’ll cherish every single one of the pictures we take of them.

Once again, another perfect day. If you ever want perfect vacation weather, go on vacation with us. I’m not kidding. I’m probably jinxing myself by saying this but seriously, whenever we vacation as a family, we have perfect weather. It’s very odd - but nice. We do a two-week vacation “up north” every July and we actually wish for rainy days so we can have a down day or two. We bring up all kinds of games, etc. to play and we really look forward to those rainy days where you have nothing to do but lay around in a cabin and play games and we seriously never get them.

Anywho... we really didn’t know what we were going to do today because we had already been to MK and done everything we wanted to do so we pretty much just aimlessly walked around. We did Buzz and I really bit the big weenie with that... I’m horrible. My trigger finger seriously hurt for hours after Buzz. How can you be that bad? DN2 had like 500,000 points and I think I had 10. Why are boys just naturally better than girls with stuff like that? Really? It shouldn’t be that way and if truth be told, I’m a very sore loser and I wanted to hop right back on the beat the crap out of him - but we didn’t. The lines seemed a little longer today.

We walked over to Space Mountain because DD and DN2 wanted to ride it, but it was a 70 min wait or so and just as we were contemplating what to do next, a high school band started playing so we sat down and listened to them. We were sitting with the parents and they were soooo proud of their kids playing. It was really sweet to see. And then it depressed me because neither DD, DN2 or Hercules are in a band and I realized we’d never get to go to Disney to watch them. And then I wondered if the kids that were playing in the band realized how lucky they were to be able to go to Disney to play. I never got to do that kind of stuff when I was a kid. My mom was too busy lying about her age. See what mom is doing now? She’s trying to make up for her lying by buying us trips to Disney. Works for me!

We walked through kidmania and rode Peter Pan which I always love. We did Mickey’s Philharmagic and we absolutely loved this! What a pleasant, fun, entertaining attraction this is. What I love about it is it has a little of the new and the old Disney. Very fun!

From there we did the Haunted House - again - which I still love but I kept getting that heavy feeling of.... when will I do this again? <Sigh...> After we did the Haunted House, we thought we’d see if there was any chance we could get into Liberty Tree Tavern for dinner - maybe there was a cancellation. As luck should have it, there was just a cancellation so we took it.

We had a few hours to kill before our dinner reservation so we did a whole lot more of nothing. We shopped. We sat and rested. We took more pictures and once again just tried to take in all the sights and sounds of MK. Oh yeah, Pirates was open so we were able to go in that. I couldn’t tell if anything had changed. The ugly hairy dirty leg still hung there at the end. That’s all I really remembered from it.

We made our way back to Liberty Tree and once we were seated, the CM explained to us that it was a family-style meal and that the characters would all be out to greet us shortly. We all kinda looked at each other and said, “characters?” The CM looked at us like we were complete idiots and said, “you didn’t realize this was a character meal?” Oops.. nope, we didn’t. He asked us if we were okay with it (i.e., are we willing to pay the extra $$$$ for the characters) and we (DM) said that was fine so he walked away and we all looked at each other and said, “since when was Liberty Tree a character meal?” I know, I know... all you veteran Disers out there are completely shaking your heads and rolling your eyes because I’m guessing Liberty Tree has probably always been a character meal - we just didn’t know it so - BONUS! We did eat there for lunch back in 2000 but lunch must not be a character meal - only dinner, right?

Anyway, since our character meal at AK really stunk, we were excited to get some real interaction with the characters. Plus, I was milking my birthday a bit and I was wearing my b-day pin again (sorry) so I was hoping to get a little special something from the characters.

They brought out the food and it was GREAT! It was turkey, roast beef, smashed potatoes with gravy, mac and cheese and some type of veggie. Oh yeah, a really good salad first. The food really was extremely good and after eating burgers and hot dogs and pizza for a week, it was a really nice change for us.

The characters (Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Chip & Dale) all came and went and they gave us as much time as we wanted. We snapped lots of pictures (surprise, surprise), they all attempted to acknowledge my birthday, they totally interacted with the kids - even though our kids are hardly kids. I think it was Chip who took DD’s sunglass off her head and tried to put them on him - which was funny because he was totally pulling them open wide and I was waiting for them to snap. They didn’t but it made me wonder what he would have done had he broken them. They stood behind DN2 and covered his eyes - they were just very interactive. I’m not sure if we were in the middle of a shift change or something but a few of the characters even came over to our table twice. If you’ve never had a character meal here before, I’d highly recommend it. The food was great and the characters were awesome.

Here are some pics:

I just realized every single picture I'm posting is of either Chip or Dale. There really were more characters than just them, I swear. I also told them that I had imcriminating picture of them shaking a mysterious bottle of Coke a few days back and they pleaded the fifth...

Best part? They brought out our apple cobbler (to die for) and they had a candle in it and the CM’s sang happy birthday to me. They even gave me a card signed by all the characters. For all this being a surprise for us, it couldn’t have been more fun. We had a great time.

Here's a pic of me when the CM's were singing happy birthday to me...

After dinner, we headed over to Main Street to pull up a curb for the parade and Wishes! We managed to whittle the time away by eating ice cream...

benicecream.jpg

and taking more pictures...

sommaparade.jpg

matbenkathyparade.jpg

We were sitting there waiting for the parade to begin. Main Street was clear of people. It was probably about 15-20 minutes before parade time and the curbs were lined 7-10 people deep. This lone man is walking down Main Street holding three funnel cakes, looking a little lost. He’s not saying anything but everyone (thousands of people) are watching him. He walks past everyone and we assume he is gone. Nope. There he is again - walking UP Main Street - still holding his funnel cakes - still looking lost. Keep in mind, he is the ONLY man/person on Main Street at this point. Finally, he holds his hands up and says to the crowd, “I can’t find my family!” Everyone in the crowd kinda laughs and he goes on his way and once again, we assume he’s gone. Nope. Here he comes again and everyone starts applauding him and laughing AT him. I would have absolutely died if I were him but I would have just walked up to a strange family at that point and pretended to be with them.

Finally, he was near me so I asked him if he wanted to use my phone to call his wife. He did. No answer. He walks away from me and my phone rings. I yelled, “Hey strange man!” and he turned and grabbed my phone. It was his wife. He wasn’t happy - and apparently neither was she. He kept saying, “WHERE ARE YOU?” She must have been trying to explain where she was and finally he said, “I’M THE ONLY MAN IN THE STREET WALKING - FIND ME!” He hands the phone back to me, thanks me and walks away. Once again, everyone applauded and he kinda shrugged his shoulders and went on his way - this time for real. Whether or not he found his “real family” we’ll never know. I’m assuming so. If the strange man happens to be reading this report right now, thanks for the entertainment. It was fun. I’m sure you were completely mortified but it was entertaining for us all.

Once again we watched the parade only this time it was hard to smile and enjoy it - not knowing when we were coming back. And again, with Wishes it was the same thing. Why can’t we just live in the moment? With a heavy heart, we walked out of MK. While we were walking out of MK, we saw Chace (with a “c” - remember him from our first night?) and he waved at us - whether or not he recognized us we’ll never know - we like to think so. The CM’s were all waving at everyone as we were leaving, holding the “C Ya Real Soon” sign and I couldn’t help but wonder... will they?

Up next - MGM - our last day. <Sigh>

You wish for rainy days? Yup, sounds like I need to have your help planning our vacation so we end up with nice weather.

What another great day you had! The Character Meal sounded like it was a lot of fun and what a surprise! The surprises' are usually the best.

It is sad your vacation is coming to an end. I completely understand your beginning sentiments about being sad on your last day at Magic Kingdom. I know we always see it differently the first time we are there and then the last day.

Thanks for sharing!

thanks for another great installment!!! i too hate the birthday numbers on paper. I turned 30 last year and was none too happy about it. this year, turning 31, well...lets just say that the 30 on paper didn't look as bad. I have decided that will be the number that i always write down on paper for my age. LOL

and then i will become like your mom, and my mum, and be the mum that lies about her age rather than making sure her kids learn to play an instrument so that they can play at disney one year, and i will be saying the same thing "awww i will never get to come and listen to my kids play in a band at disney. do those kids know how lucky they are!"

great report. love all your pics!

Kaysmommie, Happy and Goofy - thank you for your responses. Yes, it's very sad that it's coming to an end and I'm really struggling writing the last part because through trip reports, you're keeping the vacation alive and I feel like once I'm done with the report, the vacation is truly over.

Thanks for sticking with me through the journey. I'll try to post the last part next week some time.
