Has anyone visited or toured Fallingwater built by Frank Lloyd Wright? DH and I are looking at a visit in October. I think it looks very interesting, just looking for any information!

It's a beautiful area, there's a lot of history in Fayette County. You should also check out Kentuck Knob - that's another Wright house that's fairly close, just not as famous. I think there are also quite a few B&Bs around there that you could stay at.

Fallingwater is kind of funny for me, it's so beautiful on the outside. I haven't been there for years, but was struck by the interior - different than what I expected. I'd be interested to hear what your impressions of it are.

If you have time, take a drive in the area on the Old National Road/aka "Old Route 40". You could always check out Fort Necessity (it was so small, how did *anyone* make it out alive?), the surviving toll-houses, the Inns that are still standing. I've also heard great things about the restaurant Chez Girard in Hopwood and Hopwood itself has more original early 1800s stone/historical buildings than many more famous towns.

Yeah, I know a lot about the area :cool2:.

Thanks agnes! You gave me some great information. Our plan is to play around that area you wrote about most of the day, then head down to the Sunflowerfest in Cumberland, MD for the evening and stay there. Then head home the next day (we live in central PA).

I'm a big Frank Lloyd Wright fan and Fallingwater isn't that far from me, but I've never been there, unfortunately. I would love to go someday. It's an amazing house and definitely my favourite Frank Lloyd Wright design. (I'm going out west next month, though, so I hope to maybe see something else designed by him.)

I recall researching the tours a couple of years back, so this may have changed, but: if you wanted to be able to take pictures *inside* of the home, you had to pay for a more expensive tour; otherwise, indoor photography was prohibited. I think that's really lame, and it put a sour taste in my mouth. It may be different now, and I hope it was, but that's how it was a couple of years back when I was checking out the website.

If you do decide to visit Fallingwater, have a great time!

We visited several years ago and enjoyed it. The grounds are quite nice (weren't they done by Olmstead?), hopefully you'll have nice weather and time to wander around a bit. Double check the hours they are open and whether reservations are required - think they used timed entry tickets for the guided tours when we went. It's a fairly remote spot and there's not much around there in terms of gas or restaurants, although there was a very good cafeteria type restaurant on-site as I recall. Good white water rafting is also nearby.

You must be referring to Ohiopyle on the Youghiogheny River.
