Falling back on your friends Super Goofs September thread

Mike - no, I'll be at WDW for RFTT that weekend. Patrick is considering doing it though since he's not going to FL.

The other one is in Clinton, IL - SpookyDu Duathlon. 1.8, 20.8, 3.6 thru/around state park with bon fire and weenie roast after. Sounds like fun.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. I just hope I'm not crazy!

Mike GOOD LUCK! I'll be checking in on your race progress. We're all proud of you and all the training you've done. You've worked really hard.

First LR of my marathon training plan this weekend. Only 8 miles, but it's at a very specific pace. I will need lots of help (and maybe my husband's Garmin) to get 'er done.

I am not sure what I have gotten myself into. I received my legs of the race for the Reach the Beach Relay next weekend. When I signed up I was told I would have "easy runs" We are down one runner so we have a team of 11 to do 36 legs- 200 miles (crap!)
I am doing #6- 8.62 miles, #17- 7.39 miles, #28- 5.53 miles= 21.53 total. The first two are described as "hard" and the last is "moderate hard". I am so nervous- some of the legs will be in the middle of the night!
Please tell me I am going to have a blast!

Joanne, you are going to do GREAT and have a ton of fun at the same time!!!

You're the best, Angie! Thanks!

I did 10 miles today with galloway R2/W2 for consistent 12 minute miles. I feel pretty good. I am afraid of reinjuring myself so close to MCM so I don't want to push it. Yeah I know 20 miles in 24 hours is not exactly taking it easy!

My first visit to my physical therapist yesterday went great. She is really knowledgeable about running which is great. I learned just how non-flexible I am which is contributing to some of the problems I'm having. I have a lot of stretches I'm doing now which I know will help. I also learned how I was doing a lot of post-run stretches incorrectly and wasn't getting much benefit from them.

The only dilemma I'm having is she doesn't want me to run for four more days until my next visit and then I will resume short (30 min and less) runs 3-4x per week. I have a 10K I really want to run tomorrow. I know I should take her advice and take a break as I keep reinjuring myself but I really want to do this race. I'll have to sleep on it and make it a game-time decision.

My mom is visiting this weekend too which makes me want to find any excuse I can to get out of the house! :headache:

I start taking classes at the gym on Monday and I'm really excited about that. I'll be taking yoga and pilates which I hope will really help loosen me up a bit and help strengthen my weak (albeit oversized) core. I also want to take some spinning classes during my lunchbreak and swimming a couple of evenings.

Sounds like you are on the road to recovery, Steve. What is your actual diagnosis if you don't mind me asking? I had my own issues with knee things a year ago (pes anserine). The $15 co-pays each time killed me. Once PT ran out I went to see an ortho MD and ended up with a cortisone injection (which I was pretty against but I explored all my other options and there was nothing more I could do other than the injection). The cortisone injection was wonderful! I should have gotten it in the first place!

I love yoga class. I try to take at least one class a week. The fitness yoga is super tough but I feel so great after. I feel I am way more flexible. Another workout that really helps is riding. Every muscle group totally works including core. Not sure if that is an option for you.

If you can't run, can you walk? This will get you out of the house!

Hi all!

20 mile training run today. I felt incredible! We averaged 9:30 minute miles for the first 15.5 miles but then my running partner fell apart. Turns out you can't run 20 miles with just unsweet tea for fuel. I gotta find someone to make our race shirts with our new motto " I'd rather be skinny than fast"

Right after my 20 I sped over to my sons football game. He fumbled his first snap but after that he got in the grove. Game ended tied 0-0 but we won on stats.

So I think I am finally headed home for some rest when I get the call. My 20 year old nephew managed to impale himself on the handbars of his dirtbike. He's out of surgery and stable. He is very very lucky. He is supposed to enter the Marine Corps in a couple weeks so he's been really working hard so he can be in shape and has rock hard abs. Most of the damage was to his ab muscles and not his internal organs. Thank God for situps! The Doctor said his strong abs probably saved him alot more damage. No serious internal injuries so thats a relief.

Anyway, we are finally home at 9 pm and watching Auburn play - War Eagle!

Hi all....Super busy weekend. DH had XC meet and picnic. Plus I spent about 16 hours working on the school directory and am nowhere near finished. Plus I had to spend time........

Rooting for Mike!!!!! Way to go!

Cecilia Kudos on the run--sounded really strong. And massive PD to your nephew. Wow, close call.

Joanne Deep breath. You will do great. Just take it easy and keep your own pace.

Angie Another congrats on your 5k.

Steve Take it easy on your recovery. Did you run your 10k?

AFM....Did 8 miles yesterday and for the first time in a long time, wore my watch. It was the first LR of my marathon plan and I was supposed to do 9:30 mpm. Since I don't have a Garmin, I just marked off the mile points and took splits. Went to save them and......Memory Full--they all disappeared. However, apparently I was running 9 mpm. I don't want to slow down for fear of slowing down--make any sense? Will change for longer runs, I know. But I felt comfortable running at that pace.

Hello Goofs!

I got in a 7 mile run yesterday in 1:37. Much fasted than I thought I would be. I hope I can keep improving and maybe finish the full in 6 hours like I said I would when I registered. It still scares me that I will need to be doing 26.2 miles at some point in time, but I'm glad I am with TnT and have their support. There is one coach that has been really supportive and I hope that working with her will make me a much better runner!

I did figure out that Twizzlers and running for me don't mix. Funny since I love to snack on them normally.

Hope everyone else had a good weekend!

Joanne - I don't remember exactly what my doctor said the problem with my knee was. Nothing is torn but there is just a bad recurring inflammation which is what is causing me pain. As I was humbly reminded, I'm probably the least flexible person I know. My hips, thighs, calfs and pretty much everything else is horribly out of balance as I can't do certain stretches nearly as far as my other side. This, along with some muscles being much stronger than others as well as my overpronation is causing a lot of outward pull on my left knee.

He had a term for it that was a lot less wordy and more professional-sounding! ;)

I'm doing about 20 minutes worth of stretches and strengthening exercises twice a day now. I can't say they are helping yet as I just started a few days ago. They sure are difficult though. I thought I was getting good at my post-run stretches but I found out I was doing those wrong and the correct way is really hard for me.

I decided to skip my 10K yesterday. I had forgotten I have a half marathon I really want to compete in in five weeks. It is the first anniversary of my first half marathon so it is really important to me to do this one, even if I have to walk most of it. I didn't want to run the 10K and jeopardize my chances of running the half next month.

I really need to start cross-training more so I visited the gym for the first time today. It was sad to see how easy running has become to me (pre-knee problem) but other exercises like swimming laps kills me. It took me 30 minutes to swim 200m. I did 50m at first and then had to take a break every 25m to catch my breath, cuss, and mentally prepare myself for the next 25m. It was pretty funny to see these round little old ladies lapping me 2-3x to 1.

I was chatting with this lady in her 70's who looked just like Mrs. Claus who offered to share her lane with me. She said she was just going to swim another mile and then call it a day! :scared1:

Other than that, I did yoga and 30m on the bike today. Now I need to quickly do a few chores so my wife thinks I did something productive on my day off!

I finished folks!

14:32:20, about an hour and a half faster than I hoped, and 2.5 hours faster than the cutoff.

Of course, now I am clearly sick, and am making notes where I think I can trim time, and get to a sub 13:30 finish...:scared1:

Thank you all so much for supporting me this year, and believing in me when I didn't believe it myself!

Woohoo! :worship::banana::cheer2: Way to go, Mike!

So, when do we get a race report?

WOW!!!!!

I am so proud of you!!! how did your partner do? Did he race or did he decide to go to breakfast instead?

Congrats Mike!!!

I've had a couple of bad days. Some very unexpected news at work on Monday night that threw the entire restaurant for a loop. And, we all know what I do when I am stressed, I eat. Did have a couple of cookies in the last few days but mostly kept grabbing grapes. Better than the alternative of eating chips and cookies all day.

I just realized Mike that the time you spent hauling butt through that tri, is how long it takes us to drive to Canada. We can't even DRIVE straight through without needing to stop to spend the night and you swam, biked and ran the entire time! That was an amazing accomplishment. You should be very proud of yourself.

AFM, I saw my PT again on Tuesday and was really disappointed that she wants me to hold off on running for another week. She said she wants me to start doing the elliptical and can take a spinning class at the gym as long as I keep them at minimal resistance for now. She added a new stretch for my hips as, especially my right side, is extremely tight.

I stopped by the gym near my work today and took a tour. I work four days a week and will start going there every work day to take classes. They have spinning two days and pilates and yoga each one day right at my lunch hour. I'll add the elliptical 3x/week on days I don't do spinning.

I went to the gym near my house tonight and did 30 minutes (2.5 miles) on the elliptical. It's definitely not my favorite though but at least it gets my heart rate up and burns some calories. Hopefully I can add running back in as I really miss it! There is a 5K on the 26th I'd like to do that starts at halftime on the field of the local JC football game. It looks like a lot of fun.

Suzanne Sorry to hear about your work news. I hope it's nothing too bad.

Steve Hang in there with the recovery. I know it's hard, but it will be worth it.

Cecilia I only hope that when I reach my 20 mile run that I can use something near the word "incredible" to describe it. Congrats that it went so well.

As for me....did a very comfortable 6 miles at the gym this morning. I never usually run that long during the week. Seems like I always "trim" a little bit off the plan mileage, mainly for time sake. But today I did it all, and it was (SSSH) almost easy. Maybe it's the change in my trainig plan--the speed work and tempo paces for marathon training are slower than for 5k/10k. I'll take it. It felt good to feel good, if you know what I mean.

Have a good Thursday, all. I am cleaning out my desk at work, burning files (on DVD--for archives) and signing paperwork. Tomorrow is my last day, and thent he scary part begins!
