Fake Nails

The below photo ran in my local paper and received a lot of criticism later on the editorial page about the restaurant worker posing with a sandwich and the fake nails (it was a food review). Many were bothered about the cleanliness with those nails and working food service, but there were comments about the nails themselves. After seeing it and reading it, I realized I, myself, have a nail aversion. Not 100% but when I watch some people "model" their food on IG and other places, I realize their nails skeeve me out and distract from the food. I recall having that thought on the DFB a few times--like stop with these nails that are ruining the food photo of the beutiful Disney cupcake!

I also see people posting pictures of a new nail job before heading off to XXX and they do this claw pose and it's just awful to me. Yet some people I've seen in real life have really pretty nails done.

I think I am in the minority here, but what do you say?

I’m not a fan. Every time I see the actress from Wicked, I just think of Edward Sissorhands. I can’t help but wonder how people function in life with those extreme long pointy nails. I’m a retired maternity nurse. Even before the really extra long trend, I’d have moms struggling with how to change their baby’s diapers & clothes with long nails. I agree about the germs with food prep. I also can’t help but wonder how they handle their own bathroom situations. I guess those nails are why bidets are getting more popular.

Personally I don't care for anything fake at least not for myself.

I don't wear makeup or fake nails or nail polish or hair extensions or get my teeth whitened etc.

I just walk around here being myself whether its esthetically pleasing or not.
I rather be my real self and feel comfy than try to impress others.

That's sort of me also, but I can appreciate some things others do. Certain makeup styles and I'm okay with teeth whitening--I should probably do it. But those big, clacky nails just get me for some reason.

OMG! Thank you! Just thank you! I thought I was alone. It's so gross!

I'm not sure what it is, because I don't look at a lot of nails in my life, but the gunk built up around those nails really gives me the creeps. Honestly not sure why, but that's the first thing I noticed in the photo.

Not sure, but I think that’s filler polish not really gunk. When the natural nil grows out, you have to fill in down there by the cuticle so you can’t see it. The gunk I worry about is on the underside. 🥴

I think people who do wear make up, have fake nails, wear nail polish, have hair extensions or get their teeth whitened are also walking around being themselves too :goodvibes

It reminds me of a photo someone in my friend circle mentioned of mine where they were like oh it's so nice to see photos without make up...to which I replied well I am actually wearing make up and said it was foundation and some concealer 🤷‍♀️ I imagine they were embarrassed to make such a presumptuous comment to me.

See, you did your makeup so well you looked "natural." Compliment!

Food sanitary-wise yeah it can be an issue to have nails such as that although real nails if kept too long can also be an issue. For me right after I cut my nails when they are at the shortest is actually when the most icky stuff gets caught in them and that grosses me out personally. So it goes both ways IMO. That said there's normally requirements such as hair nets, gloves, etc that are employed. Practically speaking nails that are too sharp or stick out too far are impractical for food prep/handling if actually needing to touch the food. For a photo meant to showcase the food a different person would probably have gone over better as I think people immediately think about cleanliness and food prep.

Isn't typing on a keyboard or touchscreen rather difficult as well? I bet that takes some getting used to in order to do it well.

I took it as a compliment :) but it was just one of those times where it's a better left unsaid type statement as you might unintentionally say something where you could be very wrong. Like how a lot of guys will say they want the natural look in women without realizing said girl might be actually wearing make up lol and then they don't understand what natural actually means in that context.

All just my opinion-

In those specific nails in the pic probably not all that difficult, you're just tapping away more with the nail itself. On the other hand they do actually have keyboard overlays that can make that easier. (pic from google)

Personally my nails tend to be longer and have always been that way they just grow fast and tend to be strong vast majority of the time. I was like in 3rd grade when people started asking me if my nails were fake (which is weird to think an elementary student would have fake nails), though not the length of the pic (that's too long for what I would want on myself) and at least IME it doesn't take having super long nails to be more typing with your nails itself. Mostly it's the way a keyboard is designed and how you lay your hands on the keyboard.

Touchscreen on the other hand you probably use more the pad of your fingers than other people do, as in you might use more pressure because of having the longer nail. But that also depends on the sensitivity of device you are using.

It is... my wife is constantly yelling at her phone with her faux nails... for her nails are a positive booster for her to mingle in the public... when she was two years old a long horn cow ... many errors in the situation... ripped open her face on one side...1950s...so imagine the bullying she had all 12 years of school. The women in her social circle admire her nails and fashion choices.. she is even doing her nails now...age 74

It was a huge deal for my aunt, well into her 80s, to go get her nails done. She loved it and I think it was the contact with people and the touch of the nail tech. But her nails were pretty conservative.
