Fake animals in AK?

Has anyone checked out the video clip of the fake gazelle that DH posted yet?

When he was uploading it last night, we couldn't stop laughing. It is even better with sound, because you can hear us cracking up once we realize he zoomed in to get a better shot of it.

The video was taken May 2002 and when we went back to AK in May 2003, I teased him by saying, "There it is, still standing perfectly still, in the same spot. Why don't you get some more footage of it, Josh!"

If anyone still believes that gazelle is real after watching the clip, then I guess there is no convincing you.

The ostrich eggs are fake. I've been waiting for them to hatch for at least four years now.

During our Backstage Safari Tour last month, the CM made the comment that the egg was made out of cement (she could have been joking, I guess).

When DH goes "on safari," he takes great delight in saying, "Isn't it amazing how they get those animals to look so real?" People around us give him the strangest looks--and I give him a poke in the ribs!

It does look fake, non moving, in the video but I don't think it is always there as I have never seen it the numerous times I have been to AK. Maybe they set it up for a day to try and draw the females to that area or something. I will try and remember to see if it is there on my next trip but have not seen it yet myself.

Somehow I don't think animatronics are this real.....

This was just this past February.

Hahahaha!! I had no idea ... I've seen him there a couple of times I guess it just never occured to me :)

I know the Rhino is real! I got a rhino kiss! Well okay only heavy breathing!

I believe the eggs are real just not fertile and hatching.

I also know the male lion is real as he was up and walking around on our last last afternoon safari. He turned his head and looked at us. You have to remember they sleep most of the time or should I say cat nap?

The cheetah is also real as it was running around playing in the rain and shaking the rain out of his ears. He or she not sure which, also made the rhinos start to run which led to our rhino encounter!

The baby "Little Red" is the only fake that I know of for sure!

I just watched the video. I think I have to agree, this certainly looks fake. I would love to see Disney's reaction to seeing this video. Why in the world would you put a fake animal in the middle of all those real ones.h

I'm intrigued now!

I'm not too familiar with AK so tell me exactly where this fake gazelle can be found. DH want to check it out now.

This makes the most sense, but who knows? I'm a biology major and, while I have not taken a class that would explain this, it sounds right to me.

But knowing Disney, it probably has to do with something completely different... like Walt had a pet gazelle that looked like that or something. :p

10 bucks says the Gazelle is a disguised security cam..... or the fellow who used to have a job as Tigger until the recent "touching" incident.

Our guide on the Sunrise Safari (we called him Safari Steve, but he most likely isn't the same one who posts on these boards) said the same thing - they're real eggs, but filled with cement, just so visitors can see what ostrich eggs look like. He said they have to be checked every so often to make sure the ostriches haven't laid a real one in with them.

about the fake Tommy....

is there a CM standing near that portion of the jungle trek that can explain if/why this is fake? who's going next and can confirm that?

oh - might as well squash some more Disney magic here. (all learned on backstage tours.)

Beyobob tree (that upside down one - about 1000 years old) - fake
the ant hills that "look like cement" - surprise, they ARE cement.

Ostrich eggs - I don't remember if the "shells" were real - but those eggs are pretty fake.

PandyPaws said she is going to print out the photo and take it in to work. I'm sure she will be able to fill us all in.

Now I have go back to AK to look for the fake Tommie....woe is me

thanks

I went on one of the rare night safaris. Those lions were up and moving!
As for the Gazzelle, I'm with the person who said it's security. I 'm curious to see what Pandy Paws has to say after she shows it at work.
