We very seldom rent a car, so wondering...whats a fair price for car rental insurance for use of a compact or midsize car for 5 days?

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) costs $25-$28 per day from most rental car companies. Sometimes you can purchase this kind of coverage ahead of time through your own car insurance company or AAA for a lower cost.
Some credit cards offer this coverage (must charge the cost of the rental to the CC). Check the benefits offered with your credit cards to see if you have this coverage.
If you don't have the coverage, it may be worth looking for a credit card that does.

I'm always amazed the cost of a rental doubles when you factor in...
  • insurance of various kinds
  • airport surcharges
  • possible cruise terminal surcharges
  • taxes, extra taxes for non-locals

Call your insurance agent prior to leaving and ask to add the unowned vehicle endorsement to your policy. My company, a good neighbor, will also waive your deductible if you also carry rental car(in case of an accident) on the policy as well.

When we add UNOC it typically runs about 10-15 total....have a nice trip!

i'm sorry that i do not have a price for you but what i do have is a piece of advice.
if you already have auto insurance for your own then i would look into whether it follows you or not.
for example my sister's insurance covers her no matter what car she is driving therefore we opted to not get insurance on the rental we had for our summer road trip.

Check with your car insurance agent! The cost to add rental car coverage is minimal.

The biggest thing that purchasing car rental insurance does is:

1. If you had an accident you would avoid having to pay the deductible that you probably have with your own insurance company. Since the claim would be going through the insurance you bought from the rental company.
