Failing to Bank Points

I was making an offer on a contract this week for a Dec UY that had 2011 points. I of course wanted it confirmed that the 2011 points had been banked into 2012. Guess what, they hadn't. Even worst was that when I suggested that they get Disney to give them their one time exception and allow them to bank those points, they said they had already tried and were told no (their dues were up to date). What a bummer for them.

What is surprising is that I've come across a number of people who have failed to bank their points or let entire years worth of points expire without using them. :confused3

I wonder how many points expire and never get used?

My guess, lots and lots...... Poor sad, unloved, unused points.......

I wonder why MS did not allow the one time late banking exception....

That's what I was wondering as well. I thought as long as your dues were up to date they would do a one time exception for you.

I read a thread this past week about a DVC owner who in the last two years had been unable to get a reservation and was booking cash rooms instead of using ponts! I would bet that many DVC owners who don't frequent boards like this one don't really know and/or understand that they can rent, transfer, bank, borrow etc.

It's a shame, hey it took me a couple of years to understand it all, the ins and outs of DVC but thankfully I only ever lost 1 point!

Maybe the owner made the mistake of telling that he was going to sell. Disney has no interest in making resale contracts more appealing.

Maybe they got a MS rep that wasn't sympathetic, had previously used the option or it was related to the sales process. Or maybe they weren't really up to date or had been behind previously.

I thought you were done buying.....???? ;)

I was going to wait till the new year before I started looking again, but the US$ keeps sinking against our CDN$ that I decided to start looking earlier. Not much out there right now though that looks good :(

That's when you ask to talk to a manager or call back again and get a different rep. :goodvibes

I remember reading a story on here years ago about a Dis-er meeting a fellow member and made mention of banking points during a conversation. The non-Dis-er had no idea that you COULD bank points and just let his points go unused if he didn't have a trip planned! And they had been doing it for years!!!!!!

Our guide once told us that we would be surprised at how many people buy points, pay dues annually and never bank. He said there was one guy who purchased and went for 10 years without ever using a point! What a waste!:confused3

This is one big reason why my parents put me as an associate on their contract. They do not understand how DVC works, and would lose points every year if I didn't bank them for them.

It's a shame the seller wasn't able to get them banked.

Any incentive for them to have lied and not have banked the points, maybe so they can use them before they sell?

We have been members since 2006 (received the previous year's points when we bought) and each year we travel on the previous year's banked points. We've only lost one point and have only this year begun to "dip" into the current year's points by two points. When we start to get too low in the current year's points we'll probably add on.
