Facebook - Think twice before posting ANYTHING online

It isn't necessarily that she's posting stuff she wouldn't want other people to see...but she sees the forums she's a mod at as a place to just vent and not worry about others seeing it. The webmaster of the site said they are going to make a private forum for topics that users wouldn't want the entire world to have access to.

I totally agree and I don't post anything I wouldn't want a future employer seeing or reading.

Yeah I try to never have incriminating things online (mostly because I'm not a naughty person so I don't have anything to hide in the first place)

Ironically, searching my name brings up my facebook/livejournal/myspace but not my professional website - which is what I WANT people to find >.<

My last name is very unique. There are only like 9 families in the WORLD with the name & 7 of them are in the US & are my family =P My last name also means "fairytale" so I get some interesting sites ^_^

I definitely have all of my things set to private, but I worry about hackers & other ways around such protection (not that anyone would be interested in me, but you never know)

It's not that I have anything my parents or employeer would be ashamed to see (in fact, my parents have seen everything anyway LOL), but things that potential employeers might be iffy about (ex: religious and political views or pictures of me just being silly)

Recently my friends and I agreed that facebook, myspace, etc. are not for grownups. We all love to actually see and talk to each other. None of us tweets or does any of those other connections sites. My mother once told me 'a fool's name, like fool's faces often appear in public places.' I've come to see that she was right all along because anyone I know that participates eventually has some type of security breach/problem because of it. Heck, my child doesn't even participate. He prefers seeing his friends directly and he has a phone. Old fashioned, I know, but it limits our exposure to lots of problems. Btw, not saying you guys are 'fools' ; it's just the way the old adage went.

I completely agree with that, but the reason I use facebook/myspace is to stay in touch with people that normally you wouldn't continue a friendship with. I have a ton of friends from previous work/school & it would be impossible to call all of them up when we never had that kind of friendship. But, we still care about each other & can casually write & keep in contact. I also have an anxiety problem, so I often can't call even my closest friends. (I have to write down the reason for my call LOL but, once I actually MAKE the call, then I'm all good ^_^ ). Anyway, I prefer email/ face-to-face but sometimes that's impossible ^_^ And, as you collect all these people & see that you have 100 contacts you normally wouldn't have, it's definitely an overwhelming thought to go back to the more traditional way of actual communication.

But the adage is totally right; I mean, you're putting yourself out there, so don't be surprised to see yourself, well, out there ^_^

My advisor told me that employeers now adays will actually check for facebook, twitter etc and to look professional, I should have them - I started a twitter account JUST for that reason. (I HATE twitter!) {Someone in an internship said his job was to check to see if those applying for the job had at least 50 people following their twitter account!} So, now when they search for me, they get a nice professional page. But, then I see people with really classy jobs and really inappropriate pages! It makes me think if employers really check as often as my teacher said....

Enough from me LOL sorry, I'm chatty =P
