"Love one another as I have loved you." Hard to live up to, but nice to keep in mind. (That's in the bible, right? I'm pretty sure it is. )

My husband's grandmother was a very sweet, very smart soul. She once said to me "Honey, I don't think it's so much your religion or your church that's going to get you to heaven. I think it's how you live your everyday life."

Those are some words I'll always remember....and I do believe it is true.

I once had one of those nice 'Christian' ladies tell me, "Well, Catholics don't believe in the bible." News to me. Not to mention pretty rude since she knew I was Catholic when she said it. It got a pretty good laugh at bible study that week though.

I said then where the heck are they getting those 2 readings from at Mass every week?
I have also had members of the very large born again church in our neighborhood say to me "It's too bad your not a Christian" to which I replied politely (thinking they were just uneducated) "but I am a Christian, I'm Catholic" -and they said "I mean a real Christian" Then I just realized they were uneducated.

One of our twins is admitted to the hospital somewhat frequently. We are seeing a group of specialists (pediatric general surgeon, pediatric GI surgeon, and eye surgeion) at a Catholic hospital so she has been admitted there for her last few surgeries and procedures. WE go back next week for another surgery. I always look forward to the nuns coming to visit us. I like their prayers. They are very comforting to us.

Many years ago my DS13 was treated at Catholic Hospital. growing up Catholic I was just more comforted being there than at the more well-known Children's Hospital. I agree w/you about the nuns.

Thanks! The worst part about this surgery is the bowel prep that we start 48 hours prior! At least this time, the eye surgeon and Pedi GI were able to work out their schedules to combine procedures.

SOME born-again Christians think that way, just as SOME Catholics think the same way about Protestants. There are lunatic fringes on both sides.

The (Protestant) church I belong to is composed of about 50% former Catholics (including myself). Do we think the way that article does about Catholics? No, never heard that sentiment preached by my pastor or spoken by church members. Most, including myself, who left the Catholic church just weren't getting much from it, and got more from where we go now. That, in my Catholic mother's eyes is condeming ME (and my husband and son and sister.....) to hell. That to me is just finding a church where I feel comfortable and am not judging anyone else. I just find the Catholic mass too monontonous, and the denomination to "routined" for me.

Protestants and Catholics are ALL Christians. And each group is going to have those who stray off into the extreme. There is no reason to judge either group based on that.

Of course there are judgemental people from all churches and all faiths -- we all know that.

I'm Catholic, and I just decided to speak up against the blatant Catholic bashing that goes on every time the word "catholicism" comes up. And how, routinely, I am told that I should come to a "Christian" church, like my Catholic Church isn't.

Sorry, it isn't just a "lunatic fringe", it's what many born again Christians believe -- I've seen too much of it. If Catholics are going after you born agains and trying to get you to convert -- well, I've never seen it, but I'll take your word for it, and apologize on their behalf.

Excuse me for venting about something that bothers me -- I've seen others do it on this board and I thought it would be all right.

I never judged anyone -- just tried to bring up a topic that concerns me.

Sorry, but I completely disagree. I know that there are misconceptions that Catholics have about other Christians (stupid ones at times) but they aren't spread by priests.

There are plenty of fundamentalist churches this day that, while maybe not in a really hateful way, preach from the pulpit that Catholics are not saved, for a variety of reasons (the pope, the born again issue, we don't take the bible literally, "idol" worship etc).

I'm not saying all noon-Catholics think this way, and I'm not talking about a widespread hatred of Catholics (although every time someone mentions catholicsm on this board we see some pretty hateful things), but it's just a fact that many fundamentalist churches don't see us with them in heaven.

yeah I had to disagree with the statement that anti-catholicism is rare too...
If I talk long enough to any born again (around here they don't call themselves born-again, but just "christians" - and believe me - they think they are the only christians) something extremely offensive will come out eventually...some of them won't even make eye contact with me...once at a neighborhood dinner..when the subject of wine came up and I said something about the wine at church, a woman looked at me with disgust and said "Boy they have really gotten to you, you don't really believe that do you?"

Bottom line is this : Many of us Catholics have had the experience of born again Christians trying to "save us". We're telling you about our personal experiences -- you can either believe what we tell you or pooh-pooh it. Your choice. It's insulting and annoying and it's happened with lots of people I wouldn't consider "lunatic fringe" -- in fact, it's happened with people I like. I hate that they think they have to do it but I don't hate the person. They are doing what they think Christ has commanded them to do.

Every time Catholicism has come up on these boards we hear about how terrible the Catholic Church is -- don't worry, I've been paying attention, I know all of your complaints. This time I'm complaining, though, and I'm a little insulted by those of you who are telling me that I've not been experiencing what I've been experiencing -- that it never happens except with nuts on the internet -- -- but whatever. I'll survive.

I was an employee at a Catholic hospital for over 2 years and it was a very pleasant experience. 3 times a day a prayer would be read on the overhead- such a little thing like that can make a work day more pleasant.

When I was hired, I went through orientation by nuns who not only gave basic info about the hospital, but touched on spiritual matters too regarding the mission of the hospital, pastoral care, etc plus info on what to do if you get called to be a nun. It was unlike any orientation I've been in, and it was a nice experience. I kind of felt like I had entered Catholic school, but I mean that in a good way!
