Y'all should just stay home if you're scared of the flu. Nature will take its course as usual. And if you stay home my line to Slinky Dog will be shorter.
My 4th grader has half of her class out with the flu. We stand better odds at DW, assuming we stay healthy until we get there!

We were there a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked at the number of people (mostly adults) who were just freely sneezing all over the place, with no attempt to cover it at all. We took Airborne twice a day, washed hands a lot, and used hand sanitizer, and miraculously, did not get sick!

I highly recommend grabbing some hand sanitizers and the holders at Bath and Body Works. We hang one of each person's Camelbak so that we can use the often.

That's how I'm feeling right now. Our school has it bad, full of people that she comes in close contact with every single day. So I'm almost feeling like Disney might be the lesser of two "evils" as far as germs goes!!

I can understand that! Especially since you can be on their case about proper hand washing when they're with you instead of hoping they do it properly at school.

I got the flu at Disney in 2018. We were in line behind a family with a kid coughing all over the place (and why weren’t his parents encouraging him to cover it?? It was obvious to me this kid really didn’t feel well). I tried so hard not to expose my daughter. I told her to stand behind me, and I tried to turn my back so that I wasn’t exposed to the coughing myself. Less than 24 hours later, I came down with the flu (by then I was on a flight home, thankfully). It was all I could do to get my DD (then 6) and I to baggage claim and back home. I went to the doctor right away for Tamiflu, but it was too late for it to be effective. I was SO sick for the next two weeks. Very unpleasant. I get a flu shot every year, but apparently it didn’t work then.

Edit: I don’t know if I caught the flu from the kid who was in line in front of us, but I would guess I did.
Thankfully my daughter stayed healthy even though I was really, really sick.

I think there's a balance to strike too, especially with kids. Don't go crazy sanitizing every surface in the house year round. Just take extra care outside your house during active cold/flu season.

Some germ exposure is probably best for our health. One of the first studies was done over 100 yrs ago that showed children from larger families were less likely to get severely sick, probably due to increased exposure and getting dirty more often. And now hearing about the rise in auto-immune disorders, some specialists are thinking it's linked to not having enough immune exposure. Like most things in life... germs in moderation.

And the flu vaccine does not help against all the different mutations of the virus, so the best thing is just to wash your hands as often af possible
It’s hard to wash your hands often at Disney. We do wash ours when at the restroom and I also use hand sanitizer. I’m not sure it helps but I get sick less than other people in my family who don’t use it.

That’s what we do and also get them from Bath and Body. I try not to touch any railings at Disney, but sometimes you have to hold on to something on the thrill rides. We get out the hand sanitizer after we get off rides or sit down for a break.. We also wash our hands in the restrooms before we eat, but hand sanitizer is used a lot at Disney.

They closed down the elementary school in my town because 40% of kids were out sick this week. Influenza A and B. So crazy!

Discussion boards have a tendency to get people worked up over things, it seems. The flu is a fact of life, and has been for the last 60 years I have been alive. It seems that people forget that having anxiety over things like the flu can actually make you MORE likely to get infected.

While I agree with your thoughts about not over sanitizing, as the youngest of a large family definitely exposed to germs with an autoimmune disorder, I'm going to disagree with specialists trying to link lack of immune exposure to auto immune disorders.

Same here in Ohio. Schools are in towns all around us. They need to clean the schools with disinfectant and have all students wash their backpacks, coats, hats ..etc

Flu’s seem to be getting worse though causing more deaths. Just saw on the news 8 deaths in TN from it. Then there is the one from China that has some cases in the US now. I’m not anxious over it though, but being aware and taking precautions .

"Flu’s seem to be getting worse though causing more deaths. " Remember, too, that the population has increased as well. You have to look at flu deaths per capita, and you will see that the media has a tendency to make people worry more than they need to. I say this, because I know people who currently are developing panic attacks by worrying over the flu. The media sells drama, so they will make every story more dramatic to keep people reading/watching. Take the precautions you feel are effective, and everyone should stay home following health dept. guidelines, but also remember that worrying too much can be harmful too.

Same here ! DS8 had it two weeks ago - DD13 has it now ! Both of their schools are like infirmaries right now !

I don't find it hard to wash your hands at WDW. The only place that it is an issue is at DS when you want to eat at Blaze Pizza or the Dluxe Burger. They don't have a restroom in them. But I order my food and then go out and wash my hands. I use the paper towel to hold the pager for my food and the door handle, then do not touch things when back inside. Same with other restaurants, order your food, then go and wash your hands before you eat. If we plan on snacking on popcorn, go to the nearest restroom and wash up first. Too many people touch all kinds of surfaces and then do not wash up before they use their hands to eat.
