Hi
We are driving again this year :cool1: yay! We want to make it as easy as possible so I decided to look into the EZ pass but Im not sure what the process is and what the details are! First off can you load up your account whenever you want or does it just charge you linked account whenever you go under a certain amount? Also if I get the EZ pass in boston will it work with all tolls on I95? Any other information would be greatly appreciated!!TIA!!

Yes the Fast Pass, er Fast Lane* works at all toll booths on I-95.

* The name of the Mass. version. At one time there was a sign on the Mass. Tpk. that called it Fast Pass; it is fully EZ Pass compatible.

yeah, website is pretty clear. You can add money to the account online or by phone. You should keep it in the silver sleeve they'll give you when not in use. Have a safe trip..............:wizard:

BTW, I don't think the EZPass works on toll roads in Florida. You'd think that by now they'd work on all the toll roads in the country.

The EZ pass was the best thing we ever did for our WDW trips! What a difference it is to cruise thru the tolls (within the speed limit) then having to actually stop and pay. I have no idea what took us so long to get one since DH's family is from NYC and we been going forever to visit them!!

I do know the Mass Fast pass needs a certain amount of time before it is activated.

We got ours from NY. I loaded it was $50 to start and then it reloads via CC when it reaches $10. We only go as far as Virginia-- autotrain exit. IT is not valid on the FL highways.

Definitely worth it.

Good luck!

EZPass or Ipass (Illinois) does not work on Florida Toll Roads. Florida toll roads use a different protoccol than the EZpass or Ipass. My brother who works for the company that installs and maintains toll booths (he has worked on booths across the country including out east, Illinois, and FL) informed me of that fact.

I ordered my Fast Pass online the other day for our trip in August. It needs three days before it can be used outside MA.

A couple of people have mentioned on other threads that FL has prepaid transponders that can be purchased at the Welcome Centers. Definitely looking into that idea.

Most drivers coming from east-coast starting points won't encounter any FL toll roads. I-95 and I-4 are toll-free.

There's a Greenway circling Orlando with tolls, but taking it adds 20 or so miles: from the intersection of the Greenway and I-4 its 40 miles to the MK parking gates or 60 miles taking the Greenway.

Thanks for the info! I was uanble to find the FAQs until PP posted the link thank you for that! I think this will save a little time (or alot of time if the tolls are backed up!) I never thought of it until a week ago when my brother suggested it! I am really glad he did because itll be one less thing we will have to worry about at the time of the trip (hate having to carry too much cash!)Thanks everyone!!

This is correct. E-ZPass will work in all the northeast toll roads and bridges, all the way west to Illinois and south to Virginia and West Virginia. It is not compatible with the technology used by Florida's three toll systems, SunPass, EPASS and LeeWay. For that matter, it also does not work with Atlanta's Peach Pass system.

A recent article stated they are attempting to expand EZ pass to cover all I-95 tolls. The article said they are currently working with NC, but are there are any tolls in NC? There never were before. Maybe I misread it. It would be nice if the same device worked in all states. Or better yet, if all tolls were removed!

No tolls on I-95 between Baltimore and Miami....for now.

NC has received permission to *study* putting tolls on 95. It looks like Virginia has too.

I just went down for a couple of weeks to visit my mother and I noticed that the Publix sold the prepaid sun pass thing as well... Dont quote me on the price but I think it was around $25-30 bucks

https://www.sunpass.com/index

you can buy the Sunpass online and have it activated b4 you arrive in FL. If you wait 'til you get here there can be a delay of upto 24 hours for the system to recog'nize the new device

There are two basic SunPass units.

The large' unit costs $25 and is OK to be moved from vehicle to vehicle

The Mini unit costs $5 and is intended to be glued to the windshield and not moved or removed .... it uses the glass as its antenna (some say they have just help ot up to the glass and it works but that is contrary to the instructions....) At one time when you bought a Mini and activated it you got an automatic $5 credit and that made the device 'free' .... but I don't see that on the web page currently. It could be buried tho ..

SunPass has been talking about east coast compat' for as long as I've had mine (5 years now). As I understand it there is a very basic difference in the technology so either all the readers get changed ... or all the transponders get changed but it is like one side uses Mac's and the other PC's. They just don't mix all that easily.

Don't think it will work with the out of state tolls. It's Sunpass, not EZ-pass in Florida.

I got one of the mini's before my last trip. Go to sunpass.com for details. I bought the transponder from Publix grocery store for $4.99. Activated it with $20 from bank account, and they refunded the $4.99 in tolls, so I had $24.99 on the account. You have your choice of preloading it, and only reloading when you ask, or you can set it up to put a certain amount in your account when it gets below a certain level.

I loved it, and think it's great.

The stress/traffic level on the Greenway is much less. I thought it was worth the tolls and the mileage.

If you get the sunpass activated before noon, they say that it will work by 4 pm. I activated mine at 11 am, and it worked at 1 am the next morning.

The mini is $4.99, and they do credit that to your account.

I can understand that for people not used to heavy traffic...but the OP is coming from the northeast, so they'll have to pass through NY, NJ, and DC traffic before getting to Orlando. Orlando's I-4 traffic, even at rush hour, will be a breeze compared to what the driver had to go through to get there.

Since we go to Florida 4 or more times a year, we ended up buying the regular unit. It works on all toll roads in FL - including the toll on the bridge to Sanibel. Also, we sometimes will drive off Disney to go to the store (especially Best Buy or Target when a new Disney DVD is released during the week we are Disney) and our GPS will sometimes direct us on a toll road around Orlando.
We went the regular unit instead of the mini because we figured that if we rent a vehicle, we can use it in that one. We have a convertible and when we drive to FL for a cruise, we leave our car at our son's in Ft. Myers and rent a car to drive to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale and then rent a car to get back. Don't want to leave a cloth topped vehicle in a parking garage for any length of time!
