My oldest is graduating from High School next week. We are soooo proud. He is a really good kid. He earned a few scholarships and has a full ride to a super great school.

I know he is not expecting anything, knowing our limited budget. He is very easy to please. However I do want to get his something to remember the occassion.

Any suggestions?

I was thinking of a watch because he does not have one and that could fit into any pricing.

I don't think we can swing a iPod right now, he is using an handme down nano that does not work with earphones, so he uses a base speaker/clock thing. We could if we gave it to him before going to college, just not this month.

Would you think an iPod or a Nook/Kindle would be preferred?

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't get a watch. Very few people wear watches any more and an inexpensive watch doesn't really have the potential to be a keepsake. I couldn't open your link so I didn't see the actual watch that you're considering.

I would put the watch money toward the purchase of an iPod before he leaves for college. The Apple site has refurbished Nanos for $99. I've bought refurbs before without issue. They are good as new.

My high school senior would have no interest in a watch.

There are lots of inexpensive MP3 players that aren't made by Apple. My computer techie son uses one because he doesn't like the way Apple's software attaches itself to your computer and refuses to have an Ipod.

I would check and see if ebooks can be used. I got DS a Kindle because he is going with ebooks next year so that would be an option. I know since DS got his mac book for school, I don't think he's touched his Ipod, so I am not sure about that. What about a new cell phone. I know that was what DS wanted when he graduated.

You started out with extremely budget gift and then mention an iPod or an ereader. Those aren't very budget. You can get a basic Kindle with sponsors for $79. Do some online survey type things or something like swag bucks and you can earn Amazon gift cards.

Since you mentioned a budget gift have you looked in a refurbished ipod, or try craigslist. I was happy to have my books paid for as my gift, so I am sure he will be grateful no matter what.

I would think that any gift some random Dis'er offered is what would be preferred, but in the off chance that is not where you were going with this, a regular Ipod is less than $50.

If you are looking for a watch, go to Amazon and get an Invicta, they are self winding like a Rolex, sharp looking, and can be had for $20-$30.

If he is going away to college, you/he will save alot of money on text books with an E-reader. The Kindle app has alot of textbooks at a fraction of the print price. It will save hundreds over the next few semesters, but that app will also work on a computer if he already has one. If not, a netbook would be better than a dedicated e-reader and cheaper than a laptop/Ipad, or you might check the Pawn shops for deals on a laptop.

My MIL got a tablet sort of thing at Big Lots.

They have an ereader listed for 40.00. That sounds budget friendly to me.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

He has a upgrade available on a new cell phone and since his is pretty old, that might be the way to go. I could help purchase the phone and he could pay the monthly fees (by putting set amount in account to be drafted for cell fees).

Thanks all.

My, my, you and your family are extremely lucky! Having received paid trips to escort the hs band to NYC, the trip for this son to visit WDW. Sometimes your posts read as if you are hoping that someone will feel sorry for you and your family and send something to help. I can't understand how a family that has so many money issues can afford satelite tv, cell phones, etc. These are things that are expensive and not required to function.

Here's hoping that this son who has a full ride scholarship has gotten himself a job so that he can help his family out with the ever posted financial problems.

Just a thought but if finances are that tight, will be he able to afford to add books to a Kindle?

Maybe you could pay for him to attend Financial Peace University or something so he'll do a better job with his money than his parents?

I think I got a dictionary when I graduated-it's been a long time, I am not sure. I still have it. It's one of those massive hardback ones, with gold-edged papers.

I use it a lot, especially when I need a heavy weight.

I'm sure whatever a bleeding heart Diser sends will make him happy. Free is best isn't it?
