Extreme couponer arrested for theft....

The market on my corner WILL sell sunday papers on monday for full price. If I forget on sunday I just go there right away on monday and they are happy to sell me however many I want... That said. There is one employee that offered them to me for free one week as they were closing sunday night. I informed her that they all had to be accounted for and she had no idea (she usually doesn't close though in her defense).

Dollar Tree used to carry Sunday papers on Monday. It was always hit or miss if the inserts were still there. I guess that's where all the returned papers go.

When you put your trash at the side of the road for pickup it is fair game because you do not own that property. It is part of the local right of way. If your cans are by your back door then they are your property and nobody can go in it. Dumpsters are not by the side of the road. You also cannot take your trash to a dumpster to get rid of. It is on private property.

In our city you can get in trouble for picking up trash in a dumpster or from someone's trash at the curb. So it's not far game here, it's city property.

I think this lady is full of it. I do not believe for a minute that she asked if it was OK for her to take the unsold newspapers - why would she need a look-out if she did that? Sounds like total BS to me. But I also think it is odd for the store to place the papers for return on top of trash cans, where it looks like trash.

Police have discrection on who they arrest. You can make any claim you like, its the job of the police to make sure a crime is actually a crime before they arrest. I love to think of all the thieves, child molesters and drug dealers out and about no one is watching, but thank God the newspaper lady is behind bars!

So if you made a report because you had a camera stolen, do you think the Police should ignore it until all the drug dealers are behind bars? That would be small potatos theft, just as taking the newspapers was small potatos theft.

That's true here in the Boston area as well.

Really? It's common practice to stick things out on the curb for someone to take where I live (coastal FL). We do it all the time, and we've found some great stuff that way too. We have to fit all of our trash into these "auto-cart" trash cans, and the garbage people won't take "extra" stuff that doesn't fit in the cans. If you have something large to get rid of, you put it on the curb and hope that someone takes it.

In my mother's town, it is pretty common to put stuff out by the curb if you want to give it away. It just sort of disappears.

If the newspapers were on a loading dock I would say it was theft. If they were on a trash can, I think it is a very gray area. Especially if she is telling the truth about asking a store employee. Who may have seen that the papers were on the trash can and thought they were garbage too!

One of our larger newspapers sells leftover papers on Monday for people who want the coupons. They charge full price as far as I know. One grocery store in my area has the Portland Maine Sunday paper available all week for purchase. I've bought it late but I definitely check to see if the inserts are still in there before buying.
