Extreme couponer arrested for theft....

See, that's the first thing I thought of too. They're owned by the waste company and on the private property of the store. They're not for public "diving". because here's the other thing, if someone slipped or smashed their head on the dumpster, you KNOW they're going to sue the store AND the waste company. Even though they're not supposed to be going in their dumpsters.

Personally, I can't imagine doing that just so you can hoard groceries. Most people coupon to save money when combined w/ store sales. Most people don't buy 500 bottles of Maylox and BBQ sauce and stash them under their kids beds. I believe that this is also the same woman that got busted for coupon fraud....she was using the higher value coupons for lower value products, within the same company. If it is the same person, no I don't feel sorry for her at all. She makes a living off of scamming the system. These "extreme couponers" are giving couponing a bad name and making it more difficult for the average person to coupon with the intent on saving money for their family.....it's not a sport. :rolleyes1

It isn't the same lady that was made famous by that TLC show. Her name was J'aime Kirlew. This lady's name is Jamie L. VanSickler.

This is the stupidest thing I have heard in awhile. It was ON a trashcan for goodness sakes. You know , the place where people put things they don't want. There are tons of other places to set them if they needed to be picked up, not a trashcan.
My husband drives me lots of places and I dare say he even looks around as he does. He also drives away when we are done.

The police should be ashamed of themselves. At the MOST they should have contacted the woman and told her to stop.

Crazy......

i think the woman should not have been dumpster diving on private property, but i think the store is at fault too simply because i worked at a place that sold newspapers and in retail for years. to ensure people did not steal "trash" of value we always had procedures. we used to cut the top off of newspapers and throw them in a dumpster that was behind a gate. in retail you were told to destroy certain items that could be stolen and used for illegal purpose or re-sold. if these unsold papers have retail value to put them in trash bags on top of trash cans out in public is not a secure way of leaving them for a pickup. i remember i used to argue with people working at the convenient store that things like cups of ice did have a retail value and could not be just taken for free with purchase of a can of soda. i think overall sometimes people assume that things have no value and are free because they want them to be.

Where I used to live, any retail establishment that had unsold newspapers, they would just cut off the top portion of the front page to return to the Newspaper to show as an unsold newspaper and they would discard the rest of the paper. Or at least they did about 15 years ago. It's like when I worked in a bookstore years ago. Every week, we would get a list of books that weren't selling, that would be taken off the shelf to return. For the paperbacks, instead of returning the whole book, we would just rip off the front cover to return and throw out the rest of the book. I got a lot of free books that way.lol. I think we also had to use a black magic marker on the upc code too.

This lady's name is Jamie L. VanSickler.
Her name sounds very familiar to me. Does anyone know, has she been on the Extreme couponing show?

So, if you leave your house with the door unlocked and someone robs you, you are at fault? If your daughter dresses in a short skirt and gets raped, it was her fault?

This was private property. If she wanted the papers and believed they were trash, she could have asked. That is what we do when we want boxes.

Why didn't she just dumpster-dive the recycle bins for extra coupon inserts? That's what I do on recycle day, and that's what my couponer friends do too. I've only watched one episode of that show, but that is what the couponers were doing on the show too. I think that what she did was pretty questionable...it could be an act of dumpster-diving, or it could be theft.

That says everything regarding her character. I guess she thinks "finders keepers" applies.

Yeah, I know this discussion is about coupons but I can't get over her comment about the camera in a parking lot.... THAT peeves me!!

In the article she claims she did ask a store employee and was told that it was okay. Who knows if that really happened by I could easily see her asking a part-time check-out clerk if it is okay and having some 17 year old girl shrug her shoulders and say "Well if it's on the trash can I guess you can take them."

I thought that too, but it's not the same one. the one you're thinking of is J'Amie Kerlew who did the annoying victory dances at the checkout counter. She did get busted though for coupon fraud. she was using high value coupons for items that were not what was on the coupon and making money off it . she also taught people how to use high dollar coupons on lower value items because the UPC wouldn't catch it in the store's computer. It was a big scandal on the show. (I think she's what started making people get a bad taste in their mouth for couponers)

I always wondered how they got all those coupons, because lord knows they are probably too cheap to buy all those newspapers.

She claims she DID ask which is where the problem lies in this whole thing. If she did ask an employee or a manager, they certainly aren't going to come forward and admit it now. Not after this has escalated into such a big deal.

Thanks, but no. I know who J'aime Kirlew is. This womans(Jamie VanSickler) name just sounds so familiar to me.

I would consider it theft if the old papers were being put somewhere other than a trash can. That in itself makes the whole story questionable. Any normal person would consider something that was set on a trash can to be trash.

Her actions do make me question whether she knew ahead of time that the papers were there to be taken back to the newspaper distributor for credit.

The police should be ashamed of themselves. At the MOST they should have contacted the woman and told her to stop.

How exactly is this something the police should be ashamed of? They are just doing their job. Someone else filed the report and made the complaint.

I love how she said. "its like someone leaving their camera in the parking lot and someone picking it up and keeping it, they can because the other person left it there"

What an idiot, just because someone lost something doesn't mean its yours, I hope she gets what she deserves.

I agree... if something is thrown on the trash can... I'd think it's TRASH. I would convict her of dumpster diving, not theft. If I were going to dumpster dive, frankly I'd have a lookout too. It seems like it's an embarrassing thing to be doing.

Although the part about her thinking it was fair game, like a camera??? what a stupid thing to say ugh

Police have discrection on who they arrest. You can make any claim you like, its the job of the police to make sure a crime is actually a crime before they arrest. I love to think of all the thieves, child molesters and drug dealers out and about no one is watching, but thank God the newspaper lady is behind bars!

Normally, I would NOT side with someone who was taking something that wasn't theirs, and that they hadn't paid for.

However, in this case - if it goes on top of the trash cans..... you REALLY have to wonder if the newspapers were trash or not.

If the newspaper plans to collect the unsold papers, they need to have a collection bin or a designated storage location that is either secured or clearly marked.

I personally do NOT think that she was stealing.

I realize there is a VERY fine line in this situation as she shouldn't have been taking anything from the property that she had neither paid for, or had any claim to. If the charges are not dropped, they need to start charging everyone who dumpster dives, takes cardboard boxes, and all those people with a basement full of milk crates in use as storage cubes!

Do I think that she should have to pay restitution.... ehhh - I'm not sure on that. My first instinct is yes, she should have to pay for the papers.

If newspapers were legitimately concerned about theft of newspapers, you would think that they would invent a newspaper dispenser that would dispense one paper at a time - unlike the coin operated locked boxes containing stacks of newspapers all over the country!

I work in circulation at a major newspaper.
This is theft, plain and simple. It's no different than taking milk crates, 2 liters soda bottle cases, or bread racks from the back dock. The store should be making the complaint though, not the newspaper.

If a carrier drops 200 papers off at Kroger, they are responsible for 200 papers. If the carrier picks up 0, then Kroger pays for 200. If the carrier picks up 20, Kroger pays for 180.

If, after the store closes, 20 papers walk away, ultimately the store is responsible for payment, since the carrier cannot get credit without them. If suddenly the sales don't match, the usually loss prevention gets involved.

With the spike in paper thefts, there are sneaky ways to find out who is taking papers. One expensive way is a scale that goes just below the paper tray, you type in the weight of the paper, and electronically sends a report that a paper has sold. If that number drops by 2 or 3, then theft is occurring. Usually a pattern develops. We have also stationed people in unmarked cars within eyesight of the location to snap photos of the thieves. Other papers have stopped using vending boxes on Sundays as theft has skyrocketed over 25%.

If you are stealing newspaper for coupons, you will get caught.

I think this is probably correct.. A few years ago there was something in the Sunday newspaper (some big news media coverage thing that I wanted for one of my scrapbooks) and wouldn't you know, I forgot to go out and get the newspaper that day..

Bright and early Monday morning I was at the General Store when they opened, saw the leftover papers all bundled up, and asked if I could purchase a few copies.. They politely informed me that they were not able to sell or give them to me - that they had to be returned to the carrier that delivered them..

So - yes - I would think she was stealing..
