I believe you're right, that the $800 is NOT in addition to the $8 discount if you take the AP's. People use "gift card" and "discount" interchangeably sometimes, because often discounts are in the form of a Disney gift card that you sign back over to them. But as I understand it, everyone gets the base discount, which varies by property, but, for example, for VGC is $8 per point. Then you get your choice of another incentive: (1) the cruise, (2) the additional discount, or (3) (if you have a Disney Visa) the AP's. Different incentives will have different value to to people in different situations. At 100 points, AP's are probably worth more to me than $6/per point, but only if I can use them. The cruise would be way more valuable if I compare it to what I would pay cash for the cruise, but the timing is bad for me, and with 5 people, it would cost me about $1000 to use it. Not so free. I'm going to go with 125 points, and then take the extra $8 off instead of the AP's.
