External flashes

Canon T2i... if I need an external flash, what am I looking for?

I have the 270ex for my Canon Xsi. I don't know how the t2i is, but I have found that if I'm taking flash photos, the onboard flash takes a bit to recycle after the first few shots. Adding a flash takes care of that problem. I had the same problem with the Xti I used to have.

I had a larger one, but got tired of carrying the camera along with the external flash, especially if I had a larger lens on the camera.

I have had the 270ex since spring, and have really liked it. There seems to be plenty of power, and its smaller size is perfect!

can this flash reach a decent distance?

can this flash reach a decent distance?

I generally don't use flash for long distances, but here are the specs from the product description:

(Tested at ISO 100, with EF 50mm f/1.4 lens)
For normal (28mm): 2.3-51.5' (0.7-15.7m)
For tele end (50mm): 2.3-63.3' (0.7-19.3m)
For high sync speed (at 1/250 second): Approx. 2.3-24.9' (0.7-7.6m)

If you use a direct flash with a dSLR, you flash photos will be no better than a P/S camera.

I suggest either the 430EXII or 580EXII which have plenty of power for a ceiling bounce or use with a difuser.

Good flash protography is an art, which requires learning some new skills.

You can also bounce this flash, and add a diffuser if you like.

I've had the 430 EXII on my wish list for a very long time. Yes, the 580EXII has more power but the 430 EXII seems to have the right price / performance spot.

I was just researching the 430EX II on Amazon. Seems like a good flash. I'm trying to figure out if that one is worth the price difference over the 270ex. Any thoughts?

the Canon 270ex has limitations - no swiveling head (important for indoors) and no manual power settings so I think you should avoid this model

I use the Yongnuo flashes - Chinese knock-offs of the Canon, Nikon brands!
they have full ETTL and manual controls, diffusers, zoom levels, etc. only $60 !

Or apparently, I'll just go ahead and order the 430EX II, and it will be arriving tomorrow! :rotfl2:

:yay:

(But I'll still check out those links so I have an idea what to expect from it. :thumbsup2)

Once again, Thanks for the help, everyone! (In other words, thanks for helping me spend almost a grand today, between this and the fisheye lens from this morning! :rotfl:)

And now I really need to be banned from Amazon.com for a very long time. :rolleyes1

Amazon can be deadly! I have Amazon Prime, too, and that, combined with the fact that my credit card number is stored there, has led to many a spontaneous purchase, especially when I am stressed at work!

Thank you. I'll read this after dinner. Man, you guys have been so helpful!! :thumbsup2

Ah, I'm just living vicariously through your purchases....the thought of having a small pile of disposable income and a camera list......man, could I so some damage....

Have fun!:cool1:

Ooooo!!! I might have to look into those knockoffs. I've recently been debating to either gets a nice external flash, or purchase a nice prime lens. After giving it some thought, I definitely know the prime would get way more use. But if i can get a decent flash for just $60, I'll definitely hop on that.

do a google search on "Yongnuo YN465"
It's a flash that works with the Canon T2i menu, ETTL, full manual controls, built in white card, diffuser, etc. only $65 If you want a fancier flash that has zoom levels, optical slave modes, etc. get the YN-467 (you'll pay $75 !)

Cool!!!!! I definitely don't need anything fancy. I'll look into that 465. Thanks for the suggestion.

Has anyone had any experience with this flash?

I'm trying to decide which flash I should rent to take to Disney. I like the compactness of the 270 versus the 430.

Any input would be appreciated.

I have a larger Speedlite, and just last year picked up the 270EX for the same reasons. I like having an external flash for my people and character shots at Disney, and I loved the compact size of this one.

I don't recall that it was very expensive. I think mine was around $125 with free shipping. So I don't think I'd rent it. I'd probably just buy it.
