Extension cord?

Very interesting. Makes you realize just how much we take for granted when we plug something into the wall.

I've read all of the posts & I apologize but what can we bring to plug in things such as a hair dryer, flat iron, etc?
that is

No need to apologize!
There is nothing you need to bring, but you need to plug only one into a receptacle at a time and from the pictures of the cabins PS has posted, it looks like there are at least 2 at the desk so you can plug both in and use them without any issues.
The problem is if both are plugged in and used together on one receptacle or extension cord it will overload it, exactly the same as when you are at home.

In simple terms high powered hairdryers (1800+ watts) use up all of the capacity for a receptacle so nothing else should also be plugged in/sharing the receptacle and needing power as well as it is at it's already at it's maximum.
Laptops, tablets, cell phone chargers use very little power each, so it is safe to have more than one plugged in/sharing a power strip at the same time as they will not exceed the maximum amount of power that single wall receptacle can provide.

HTH's!

Electrical safety rules on a cruise ship should not be taken lightly. The lives of other passengers are at stake here. This is not like trying to get away with sneaking your own booze on the ship. Shmoo, I would not bring that multi oulet plug because you just don't know the quality of it. Also does it have a UL listing or similar testing agency stamp or tag? As any former Navy or commercial mariner on this board will tell you there are not many things worse than a fire on board a ship at sea. Been there.

I just thought of an analogy that may help explain electrical consumption better.
If you had a child who was very very highly dependent on all of your attention 100% of the time dealing with them one on one and you can manage with them, but by adding an additional child as well that would stress you and make you get hot and lead to you breaking down (overloaded). But by having someone else take care of the second child (a second receptacle) you are OK.

The best thing IMO is if you are in doubt if it is safe, bring it in your hand baggage, got to the front desk and ask them to have the electrical engineers check it over first. If they think it is they will bring it back and you can collect it. If not they confiscate it and hold it until the end of the cruise and you pick it up from the naughty room.

Most of what I generally need to charge are things that have a USB port on one end. So I use a multicharger like the one below. It plugs directly into the wall so it's not an extension cord in anyway so if you have a lot of products that require charging it may be a good compromise. If the taps aren't allowed.

Check out the price at this link!

I got one last month and love it! Sure minimizes luggage space!

I have two of the anker Chargers and love them. Though mine has a cord that plugs into it the wall. It was definitely allowed on the wonder last February. I recommend that over the one above because it fits in smaller spaces and not having to worry the plug might not fit due to tight spaces or other "wall warts"

The best thing about carrying this is at the airport when everyone is jockeying for two outlets and 2 USB ports you can ply this in and let 4 or 5 other people nearby charge with you. I've even gotten some cheap 10 feet usb extension cables so I can have both my partner and I have our phones on each other's side of the bed

If those multi chargers have a built in surge protector, that is exactly the same thing built into many, but not all power strips that can cause a fire on a ship.
Be careful when choosing one to buy if you intend to use it on a ship, and if your's does have surge protection circuitry, please either leave it at home, or if you have it from a land vacation still, please do not use it on the ship for everyones safety.

@PrincessShmoo
Has any of the discussion helped at all in your understanding of electrical issues?

I only ask as you have not responded to anyones posts, except the one praising you.
If you still have questions, please fire away! :)

Are you able to confirm that the multi charger you posted a link to does not have a surge protector built in, as I've tried to google the specifications and even tried to find the manufacturer linke without success?

@Anisum @DLM1980 also can you confirm if your chargers are compliant and without surge protection.

Looking at the device.... there is no indications of surge protection. Surge protection is a "feature" and I see it promoted with other devices. For a $7 device.... would there be surge protection?

Well it depends on if it is on clearance to make room for new stock?
DirectCanada are selling it for $29.99?

Maybe it would be best if you find an instruction sheet for it and check before using it on a ship?

What about the factory USB chargers.... how can you tell they don't have surge protection?

No. They have voltage regulators. Only designed to regulate small inconsistencies in voltage that occur dependent on how far away you are from a transformer. Usually +/- 5%

I have no clue. i looked on here and bought one someone else suggested and it wasn't confiscated back in February

After having a look at the Anker website, the product picture you posted is no longer available.
But all of the multi charger products have a built in surge protector, and therefore are dangerous and "could" cause a fire on a ship.

This problem is still only an advisory from the USCG and not regulation, which I think it should be.However it is only going to get worse as the cruise industry appear to not be keeping up with the demand to charge electrical technology. And it is only going to increase.

I'm sure none of us want to be "that person" that innocently brought on something dangerous and caused a fire.
But I'm not sure how they can inspect everything electrical as well.

What are your views and thoughts?

It took awhile for hotels to have USB ports but someday cruise ships will have two ports by each side of the bed and two by the desk :)

We can only hope the next gen dcl ships have them and they retro fit them to the wonder and others during drydock!
