Extending stay after check-in?

Has anyone ever had any luck with booking an extra night after checking in to a resort? We're going for an overnighter on September 14 for MNSSHP, and I was thinking of surprising my family with tickets to AK the next day and staying an extra night (if I can save up the money! ). We're currently booked for one night at the Contemporary. I know the logical thing to do is to just call and see if I can book an extra night, but I would rather just pay cash when I get there and not have it charged to my husband's credit card (that would spoil the surprise!). Any thoughts?

Did you book a room only reservation? If so, you won't pay for the other night until you check in, so you could keep the surprise.

We have added on a room several times at check in, even when there was no advanced availability. Twice at the CR and once at AKL. We decided to extend our stays to match family members that were travelling also, once at the CR I tried for 2 or 3 weeks in advance to get the extra night without success, no availability. So as a last ditch effort we asked at check in and they said they "would see what they could do"...I was not optimistic, but when I checked back the day before we were to leave they had a room for us and billed it at the AP rate we had used for the rest of the stay. (I was fully expecting to pay rack rate for the night of it was available at all)

Once at CBR we decided to turn a 1 night stay into a 2 nighter at the last minute, but no luck... guess it just depends on whether they have anything available.
