Expired License?!

UPDATE: I sent a message thru the RMV site about the confusion and I just got a message back that my license has been renewed and there is no need for me to bring the application to the registry. :bacon:

So I have renewed my license, 3 months early, so it won't interfere with my vacation :)

Hooray! And good of you to notice it was going to expire :) We have a friend who didn't notice for more than a year and ended up having to retake both the written and road tests. No big deal, right? She failed the road test the first time (at age 37!) because she thought she knew how to drive and was doing everything right! :) We laugh about it now but 2 weeks without a license with two kids was not funny for her at the time!

My sister doesn't drive, so she has a state ID. She renewed it one year, and they did not give her a new one on the spot. What they gave her was a sheet of paper with her picture and signature on it, as well as the official signature of the DMV person.

She was told this would be fine for traveling purposes. It was fine traveling from Providence to Orlando- coming back was a PITA. They were so rude at the Orlando airport. They flat out said that they thought she was pulling a fast one. She got frisked right before boarding the plane too. We flew Delta that year and the woman at the counter in the boarding area was flat out nasty. I will never fly Delta again. This incident isn't the only reason why though.

This was in 2005.

Whether or not you can get a new one on the spot solely depends on the state. In New York, you cannot. License printing is outsourced by the NY DMV and therefore it takes anywhere from 2-3+ weeks to receive it in the mail.

I just realized that my license expires on my birthday this year... which is 6 days before we leave for WDW!! How do I handle that? Will the new one come in time?

*All* states that we've lived in at least give you an immediate *temporary* one that's good until your permanent one comes in. :goodvibes

We also can renew up to 30 days in advance of our birth date.

They used to issue the permanent one here, but had to start mailing them because of all the people giving *false* addresses!!
I always just keep my *old* license with my picture on it, as well as my temporary one until my new permanent one comes in. Have never had any issues that way.

Hi neighbor! I am one town to the west! :yay:

Next time around (I think 5 years) you will need to renew it in person for the eye exam. Are you a AAA member? Assuming they don't discontinue it, you can renew a Mass license in person at the AAA office on East Mountain street in Worcester. I was in and out in about 5 minutes. Easy peasy!

Edit: I saw in a previous post that you said that AAA RMV services aren't available anymore. According to AAA, Worcester offers it and you can sign up for the reminder service.

So odd! We are not allowed to wear glasses in our pictures here in NH! :lmao:

I just had to go check my license. Must depend which DMV office is taking your picture because I definitely have my glasses on in my driver's license photo. Maybe if your glasses are tinted or dark? I don't ever remember not wearing my glasses for my driver's license photo.

This is all so strange to me! In OH, we just walk into a BMV, smile pretty, get our new license, and walk out. It's so weird that other states have to wait around to have their ID mailed to them.

Just don't smile with your teeth - Thats illegal here in Jersey.

Funny! I got my new license in mid Sept this year. I normally wear contacts, but was wearing glasses that day. I took my glasses off for the picture and the DMV lady told me that since my license says corrective lenses that I had to wear the glasses for the picture. When I told her I normally wear contact lens, all she said was 'OK, don't worry about it then'. Then just before she took the picture she said, "Smile".

Here, we just wander into the DMV with our old license and wander out sometime later with a new one.

We were going to be at WDW Oct 26th-Nov 4th during my birthday, so I went to the DMV office in mid Sept and told them I would be out of town for my birthday and came in early so I'd be sure to get my license in time. She said no problem, tested my eyes, took my picture, gave me a piece of paper that had the picture and all the info on it, and said I should have my real license in 5-10 business days. I had it exactly a week later.

Just call your DMV and ask. Every state is different. How is anyone here supposed to know?

Here in NJ you just show up at the DMV with your old license, money, 9,498 different forms on ID and proof of address, don't smile too much and walk out with your new license :thumbsup2

Don't know if it's state policy, or just a cranky CS rep, but here in VA they didn't let me smile at all. Talk about a mug shot.

But as the pps have all said, you can probably just go to a local DMV office and renew in person before the expiration date. You'd have to renew before it anyway...otherwise technically your license expires, and here, at least, that incurs lots of lovely reinstatement fees along with regular renewal ones. I've always had my renewal license in hand at least several weeks ahead of time.
