Does soda go bad?? :confused3 Why are there expiration dates on soda cans??

I just bought a 24 pack of Diet Pepsi and it has an expiry date of 5/7/07! :guilty:

I will not drink all 24 cans by then...?? :confused3

What do you think is the shelf life of soda??

Thanks DISer's!! :cool1:

Coke's pretty acidic. It'll probably fight off anything nasty.

Use by dates are different to best before dates. You shouldn't eat products that are past their use by date (like dairy or meat). Best before dates indicate that the product MAY deteriorate after that date but it's up to the individual to decide whether the product is still acceptable for consumption.

That said, many fruit and veggies are still good WAAAAAY after their use by date.

Diet sodas often have a quick exp. date. The artifical sweeteners break down after a while & that really REALLY affects the taste of the product. You can try haning onto them after expiration, but from my own personal experience - YUCK!

(I used to work as a consultant at Pepsi.)

!!! :sad2: I never look at soda dates to begin with BUT this pack had CHRISTMAS LOGO's :santa: all over it and I never noticed THAT until I got home!! :santa: Hence me then deciding to check the dates!!

Do you think I should take it back?? :confused3

I am drinking exprided soda right now and I am here writing this message if anything I think it does taste a little different but not much.

If you go over a few weeks I think your fine. If you want it to last say a few months I would say don't try it. I know that we have had pop that was really old and it was gross had thick slimmy things in it.

Eh - I would consider taking it back - if they take it, then yay you! If not, then shoot an e-mail to Pepsi telling them about out of date product & what store it's in (maybe they'll send you a coupon?). A sales rep really should have removed the product. (Unless, did you buy it at a discount store, or a regular grocery store? I ask because it's unusual for holiday product to be on the shelves that long after!)

KMART!!! :sad2:

Although it should be good for a few months after the date (absent storing it in a high temp area) I'd recommend taking it back if you plan on having the soda on hand for a while.

Diet sodas have expires for a reason, the contents can explode while opening, and I'm not talking after you shake it up, and the contents can usually start tasting like furniture varnish.

the regular sodas seam to have a lot beater shelf life.

You know, I have been buying soda for a very long time...:guilty: (I am old) AND I never ever recall until recently (last few years) expiration dates on soda....hmmm.

I wonder is there an expiration date on the 2 liters...(I never buy them)!!

Cans exploding, soda going flat, artifical sweetners breaking down, tasting slimmy, deterioration!!!! WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!!! :scared1:

There is an expiration date on most 2-liters.

As others have said, it is the diet products (specifically, the sweeteners in them) that have a short shelf life.

Did anyone notice that the soda sweetened with Nutrasweet tends to get more nasty when it is a few weeks past the exp date as opposed to the soda sweetened with Splenda. The soda with Splenda seems to last longer past the exp date.

Or, I could be crazy....................

Does DP/CF have Splenda or Nutrasweet in it???

I'd try to take it back! Good luck & let us know what happens! And, really, try also contacting pepsi via the web...

NO PROBLEM!!! :goodvibes

I took the soda back and they said would you like to exchange it or get your money back...I went over to the big D.P. display and found one that was expiry in July and that was that!!! :thumbsup2

Sheesh, now one more thing I have to keep my eye on when shopping. :cool2:

I was at a church fish fry one time and we noticed that the diet pepsi tasted flat (plastic bottle). We looked at the date and it was 6 months past expiration! Apparently it was donated to the church! We exchanged it for something else that wasn't expired.

That's great! And, did you let Pepsi know too? They would probably let the distributer know, who will let the route driver know...
