Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

Just wanted to post two little things.

The Course Talks: The EE5K last year offered course talks like this year is doing. I stopped by near the end of one of them, and it sounded like the speaker was explaining the race course and the bag check process. She also answered some people's questions about what to bring inside the park and what you should leave behind.

I think for anyone that's unsure how the race is going to be, the course talk might be good. It sort of allieviates those uneasy stressers. :confused3

The other thing.... I noticed while reading the final race instructions last night that the scavenger hunt section of the race will "officially" close at 12:15am.

I told my mother this, who is a single walker and has been really worried about the cut-off time, and this really helped her relax.

So, anyone that might stress about not making the 16mm time, you should have over 2 hours to get through the whole thing. Just hope this makes people less nervous! (I know it eased my worry, a little):thumbsup2

Thanks so much! I'm leaning toward skipping it - we're well versed in the AK layout, so I don't need to hear about that, and after the 5K in Feb. I feel like I've got a handle on the Disney race details. I don't really care to know too much about the obstacles ahead of time - they are what they are and we'll deal with them as they come. I'd much rather spend that time at the MK. :)

Oh, I was so worried! I tried to get my waiver and bib # and it kept saying I wasn't found! OMG! I called runDisney - thanks Jason, he was so nice! Turns out my birthday is wrong in the system....so, I am bib #194.
Theories that the lower #s are the individuals - I think that is about right!

I am getting so excited! I got my bondibands in the mail yesterday - they are so cute!!! Now, if the back would just quit hurting and I could get back to training....oh yeah, and finish my "Team Shirt"!!:thumbsup2

The same thing happened to me for the Princess Half last year...my first half ever...and I was in total freak out mode!! :) Ended up being the same thing though...my b-day was wrong, I think the wrong year or something. So glad it was an easy fix. All I could think about was the previous 8 or 9 months of training going down the drain. I'm glad it was an easy fix for you too!

Thanks - they had my bday off by one day - they have now fixed it in the system. I am glad it was an easy fix too!

Did anyone read the part about the water and medical stops? There is just 1 stop during the 5K and then 1 at the start of the scavenger Hunt. I have not run many 5Ks but all 3 that I have (LOL) had water stops at the 2 and 3 mile markers. I guess the scavenger hunt entrance is close enough to the 3 to count?:confused3

Thanks for posting this, that's good to know. We may skip it then if we're running low on time to get back to Epcot for our late lunch ADR. I figure if the info discussed in the session is absolutely crucial to the race it would be written in the final race instructions or somehow made mandatory to attend.

I did notice that too...I'm more used to a sip at each mile since that's when I take my short walk breaks...but I've run a couple of 5k's with just one water stop at the half way point and I was ok...they were in cooler and less humid weather though. On our training run a couple of weeks ago, my young teammate wanted a sip at each half mile....so now I'm wondering if I should wear my smaller water belt for us just in case. I know I'd be fine without it, but I'm more worried about her now....hmmmm, something to think about I guess.

I had been wondering if I even needed to wear my hydration belt but now that I know there aren't many water stops I will for sure wear it. It has a small bottle each for DD and I so now I know for sure to take it.

I was so relieved to see the ending time for the race and scavenger hunt! I know we will finish with plenty of time but it really puts my mind to rest-- race nerves get the best of me!!

My race number is 666. My sister and I decided to stay as singles. We should be in the same wave, but if not, you can move backwards to be in another wave.

Alright...so I didn't get my run in tonight. Boo.

I didn't get to be until about 1:30 last night, so I knew I was going to be pretty tired already today. But I got my second allergy shot this morning, and I have been a complete zombie all day. Even some of the girls in my class admitted that I wasn't making a whole lot of sense a couple of times today.

So after making my cake pops for Bunco tomorrow night and relaxing for a bit, I decided that tonight might not be the best night for a run. Tomorrow is an incredibly busy day for me, but we'll see if I can squeeze one in before Bunco.

I did have a chance to finally read the race info sheet, and I think DH and I will probably go to one of the race talks on Saturday. They're only 30 minutes long, and being new to the whole RunDisney thing, it could only be helpful!

And with that, I will submit one of my assignments and then pass out with my little KigerKats. One of them was pacing around me last night, really stressing out over the fact that I wasn't in bed yet. When I finally went, she immediately curled up next to me, like "FINALLY!"

Thanks! Now I understand what y'all are talking about!

Thanks!...and to everyone else that offered a suggestion too :) I know both of the running stores near me carry SPI belts, Amphipod and Fuel Belt products so I'm going this weekend to see if they have any of the specific ones you all recommended. I think I'll just go ahead and take my camera with me too to make sure it fits and test the bounce factor. Hopefully I'll find a good fit. I'll probably go through all this and end up taking like one picture. :headache:

I have a Nathan fuel-belt that has both places for water bottles and a pouch where my mp3 player fits nicely....just another brand to look at if they carry a non-water bottle option.

Don't think I will take pictures with my camera - it's dreadful at night and kinda big anyway. And the camera on my phone doesn't have a flash either...hmmm, what's a girl to do about pictures?

I'm with your mom - that was helpful to know about the times. I sincerely hope I'm not wandering all over DAK until 12:15 am! :crazy2: But can totally see me getting turned around even though I've been to the park loads of times. Thankfully, my teammate has a much better sense of direction than I do.

Ha - I had to laugh at your story because I just came in from walking my dog [3 miles - woo hoo!]. I sat down at the computer to check on my EEC peeps and my dog started pushing my hand away from the mouse as if he was reminding me that, once I sit down, I won't get back up for hours. And he's right, poor guy!

And I'm feeling you on the getting out stuff -- our weather has been nice and cool these past few days but I am just not motivated. Here's hoping that tomorrow won't be the same way.

Get some rest!

Hi all!!

I have been lurking, but thought I'd poke on and say hi!

My DS17 and I are running and we're a coed team. We are bib #1105. Funny - last year we signed up in January and were bib #833. This year I signed us up the DAY registration opened and we're #1105. Guess there isn't a corelation to sign up time. :confused3

I also wanted to give my 2 cents that the race talk was good last year, but fairly short. I don't think it was more than 10 mintues or so. As first timers last year, it was valuable and helped with some of the gitters about the 'unknown'.

So Wakica knows my story (hi Kim!! :wave2:), but I got a bit blindsided during my training this winter with news that I had to have surgery for thyroid cancer on March 8th. Initially DS and I didn't think we would be able to go to Florida at all, but it turns out we can and even though we won't beat any records with our run/walk times, we are thrilled to just be going and hope to just have a great time and celebrate having this chapter behind us!! :thumbsup2

Check your inboxes, the final instructions have arrived!

And, welcome to SJ! Wow, you've been through a lot lately - congratulations on making it through thyroid cancer. It'll make this trip to FL that much more special.

Got mine! After reading it, I'm wondering if those course talks might be a little more helpful than I thought...the email said something about discussing "the mysteries of Everest and the creature that guards the mountain." I'm wondering if some of these facts may end up being helpful in solving the clues during the race? hmmmm....if the answers to the questions are going to be similar to the sample clue answer "belay" I certainly hope those terms would be used in the "talks"...I had no idea that was even a word when I came up with it as the answer. :rotfl2:

:rotfl2: I had to Google belay!

These clues are gonna kick my butt! :worried:

glad to see you back Sandy :) and sooo excited to be meeting you. hope you'll stick around for the little meet up after the race. I think we are planning an 11:15 and an 11:45 one? :confused3 Not sure if you read that part but I'm thinking we'll be in a LATE wave now with my bib number so I'm thinking I likely will not make the 11:15 one  Just no way I can do it if I don't start til almost 10pm giving myself around 42 min to run and who knows how long for the rest??

I'll definitely be taking in a course talk. I also think it still sounds like there will be hints along the path so I'm thinking we just need to keep our eyes out for certain "words" that will help - for example maybe they have a sign with the word BELAY on it?? or a description of BELAY??
guess time will tell :goodvibes

ugh, i had wanted to do 5K today but ended up not feelilng all that great around supper time. Rested most of the evening and made my way down to the treadmill around 8pm telling myself to just START b/c something was better than nothing. I gave myself permission to stop after 1 mile (1.6K). The first 8 minutes were ROUGH!!! but I made it to te 1mile mark and decided to push myself to 2.5K. I did it in just a little over 20 minutes so I definitely made a good come back from not wanting to even do 1mile. I'm happy with that especially considering my every instinct was to do NOTHING and sit on the couch until bedtime.

Hope everyone is doing GREAT on their training this week.

Can anyone tell me how to get on the Dis Boards on the iphone? Is there an app for that? I would like to be able to access our thread while I am there.

There is an app, but I've found it to be slow to load and generally not worth the effort. It's name is "eTicket WDW". Truthfully, I haven't used it in a year, so maybe they've made it work a little better by now.

Okay, I give in: I need to stop running for a few days, maybe a week. The tightness in my left Achilles/calf caused me to pull a muscle going from just above my inside-back ankle diagonally around to inside mid-shin when I did Zumba on Tues. This isn't just tightness - it HURTS like a muscle pull, both to the touch and when moving. I ran Wed. and felt it then. I did a 20-minute walk last night, at a slow, 20:00 mile pace, and it was sooo sore. Stretching makes it worse. So I know what I need to do: stay off of it as much as possible. I'm not worried about losing conditioning, but I was really, really looking forward to the mental health benefits of my planned 6mi run tomorrow! :rotfl:

I did have some good news yesterday, though... Another Mother Runner added my blog to their Other Mother Runners Tribe! Made my day. :goodvibes
