Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

After a full week on Jeff Galloway's program, I have decided that I do like it better. The downside is that my time has gotten worse per mile, but the upside is that I'm not as worn out/breathless at the end of a workout.
Yay!!! :yay: I'm willing to bet that you'll see that time drop as you continue, though, so don't sweat it!

On a good note, I have found that my ankle doesn't hurt as much when I put more bounce in my step.
Good news, and I've found, too, that running hurts my parts a lot less than walking. Talk about motivation to run more, right?! :rotfl:

When I was training for my first 5k (on the treadmill) my pace was just above a 15mm. When I ran my first 5k in Feb. I shocked myself by running a 13mm.
I also run much faster off the treadmill than I do on it - all my shorter runs are on the treadmill, and I always run faster during races and during my longer runs off the treadmill.

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad to hear it's not just me! Mine's around the same - avg a 15:00 mile on the 'mill and 12-13:00 outside.

Quick question for everyone running with a teammate.

Are you all training with your partner to try and get into a groove before the race, and if so, are you finding it difficult to establish a pace?

Yes, and yes. My partner's 9 years old and has shorter legs than me, though not by much. I've found that I have to slow down my run intervals only a tiny bit; he's a pretty fast runner. But I have to slow my walks down a lot because his walking pace is s l o w. :rolleyes1 On training runs, I just leave him behind during walk intervals and tell him to catch up during the runs. On race day, though, we were forced to walk a lot slower than I'd have liked because of the crowded conditions, so it never wound up being a problem. Of course my advantage in being mom to my partner is that I get to call the shots, lol! ;)

Morning, and happy Monday! Only 32 Fuzzy days to go ("Fuzzy" doesn't include weekends, today or the day of the event :teeth: )

I had an amazing run this weekend: planned to do 4.5 miles and wound up doing 4.85 and was still a mile from home, so tack on another mile of walking for a total of 5.85! I wouldn't call it easy, but it wasn't hard, either. The training is paying off. ::yes:: That said, I was TOAST for a couple hours afterward; as in, I measured out detergent, set the dials and started the washing machine... without putting the clothes in it. Oops. :rotfl2:

I've ran about 3 times with my teammate (my DH) and each time I have a really hard time keeping my normal pace, which is also a problem for him. He's about 7 inches taller than me, and he runs about an 8 minute mile. (I'm at 14:rotfl:) When I went running with him last Friday, I found myself going way too fast to try and keep up with him, then going too slow to try and overcompensate. I'm wondering if I should just scratch running together until the race to give myself a month to try and speed up on my own, or if I should keep trying this awkward running system to prepare myself.:confused3

Last year, at the race, my pace was insanely good, so this wasn't as big of an issue, so this is a new problem for us. Maybe the race will give me such an adrenaline boost all this will be moot.:rotfl:

DH has told me that he will stay with me, so we don't lose each other in the crowds. I'm thinking you might want to stay with your teammate if the clues are along the run, otherwise you'll be stuck trying to solve the clues by yourself. Also, (I believe) the finish time isn't calculated until the entire team crosses the finish line. So, it won't matter if he finishes before you if he's just going to have wait around until your done.

Now for the ToT 10-Miler, DH has told me that he's leaving my butt and finishing long before me. He's planning on icing his knees, eating a snack, changing his clothes and going to the locker to get his camera so he can take a picture of me crawling across the finish line. ;)

Does anyone know how long the after party goes to? I can't find it anywhere.

TIA!

Well, the Wine & Dine Half after party went until 3am. So that would likely be the latest that this one would go till. But I'm thinking this one might be a little earlier, maybe 2am? You're right, there's no end time anywhere!! Weird.

For some reason, I keep thinking the after party ends at 1AM, probably because it's a much shorter race.

I definitely don't know for certain, but I feel like the party ended fairly early (early compared to the times for the longer races at least), more in the range of midnight. Awards were 11:30 last year, and even after starting in the last corral, riding Everest twice, eating, crawling through the entire Boneyard, and waiting in the huge line to reclaim baggage, we still had to kill 45 min before awards, so it felt like a fairly long party with the earlier race start time. And the party was definitely over after the awards.

Of course, timing could be very different this year, but my personal remembering says midnight end time. (Prior year, I had time after the race/photos/food stuff to ride Everest twice, Kali twice, Primeval Whirl, Triceratop twice, and Dinosaur before the awards ceremony as well, so with the shorter lines, the length of time at the party was plenty to "do it all" in my opinion, and still be in bed early enough to do parks for the majority of the next day.)

Is there info anywhere on who will start in which corrals? My sister and I are registered as individuals. I like the idea of getting a bit of a head start since we will be slow. We are thinking of changing to a team. But not sure if that means starting at the back.

I think you'll get your corral placements at packet pick up. That's my guess anyway.

It's great reading about how everyone is preparing! If you remember, I had surgery on the 9th of March. Hernia repair. Good times. Was quite nervous that I'd be down and out and not ready for the EEC. I'm happy to report that all is going well! In fact, I did an almost 5 miler on Sunday with an average of 12:20 min/mile! Which I didn't think was too bad for an old fat guy who hasn't run in about 3 weeks! My wife has also been training. And while she cusses me each day that she runs, she is now up to a mile and a 1/2 with minimal walking. Proud of her!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK EVERYONE! We are only a month out!!!

boxdoc2 - So nice to hear that your bouncing back from your surgery so well :thumbsup2 Glad it's not going to interfere with your run!!

I haven't seen anything official, but the runDisney event Transportation page shows the last buses leaving the race for hotels at 2:30am, so I'm thinking the party ends at 2am. The awards ceremony is listed for 12:30am.

:yay: Congrats on a quick recovery and great run! I can't believe it's a month out already...

So, the last time I posted about not receiving the runDisney email updates for this race, I got one the very same day...so I'm trying that again :) REALLY REALLY REALLY hoping that we'll get to download waivers soon...I'm seeing my young teammate's mother this weekend so it would be oh-so-convenient to have the waiver for her to sign since we do not live very close to each other and I likely will not see her again before we leave for our trip. Maybe this will work for me again!

:thumbsup2 And to replicate our feat last time around, I'm here noting that I've not received a second email, either! :rotfl: Here's hoping!

Rats, no luck. Though I didn't get my waiver email for Tangled until the week of the race... I'd sure like it to be sooner this time!

Not until the week of?!?!?! We leave for the trip 9 days before the race so that doesn't exacty help us :( Why on earth would they wait so long??? I just may have to go without the stuff that comes in the email... is that going to be a problem?

At the half expos that I've been to there's always been stations to print out the waivers there if you didn't get it in the email or forgot to bring it...no idea if they'll have that for this race though. I really hope they make them available sooner than week of though.

ok thanks, good to know. What type of id etc should i take with me does anyone know??
