Expedition Everest Challenge 5K Reg open and details

Wow - that is a lot for a 5k. I realize that you get a one day ticket with it, but still...wow. WOW.

It sounds like it would be a really fun race, though.

My DH and I are thinking about joining this race. We've been making excuses to get in shape, and what better way than by involving anything Disney! This run sounds like a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to it already (even though we haven't registered yet).

My questions to anyone out there is:

1. is the team registration per person, or per couple?

2. Any tips on training for total couch potato's? :happytv:

Thanks! :thanks:

I actually walked/ran this race last year to start getting in shape. My answer to your questions:

1. The team registration is per couple.

2. You can start with the Couch to 5K Program , and go from there.

I really cannot recommend enough getting properly fitted running or walking shoes at a running store. When I mean a running store I don't mean your local foot locker or sports authority, but a local store that sells shoes to athletes and has a team that can properly look at your walking or running gate and recommend the proper shoes.

Don't be shocked if the shoes are up there (to the tune of the hundreds), they are worth it to keep your legs from getting injured!!!

Don't give up and don't push yourself too hard while training, if you need to repeat the weeks over on the couch to 5K plan, feel free to do so. If you find out you are more of a fast paced walker than a runner, don't worry, walkers are welcome!

I am a fast paced walker and can finish a 5K at around 45 mins without a problem passing several runners. :thumbsup2

I can't figure out how to make it work for our family. There would be me, and my 2 teens doing the 5K as my husband doesn't want to do it. I also have 3 under 10 that could do the kids race. Still, how do I register a team of 3? I'm pretty sure that's a NO, but do I register my 2 teens as a team and me go it alone? That wouldn't be fun LOL

It just so happens I will be in Florida with my parents (mom 68 and dad 69) and we are talking about doing this. My parents are in reasonably good shape but my father cannot run due to having a fused ankle.

Website says:

"Pacing Requirement - The race will start at 7:30 p.m. The 5K course will shut down at 9:15 p.m. (15 minute per mile pace). The obstacle course will shut down at 9:30 p.m. and the Scavenger Hunt will close at 10:30 p.m."

Doing the math 15 min x 3.2 miles = 48 minutes. However if race starts at 7:30 and the running portion is shut down at 9:15 that is an hour and 45 minutes. Assuming the race really starts that gives an hour and half for the 3.2 miles.

My parents can walk 16 to 20 minute miles but 15 is hard to get to.

Questions:

1. Do you think it is a typo on the site and it is 15 min per km?
2. If it is a true 15 min mile do they toss you if you fall behind pace?

I have contacted Disney last week but no response. Anybody have any answers? My parents are really looking forward to this but they don't want to get tossed off the course.

Thanks,

Phil from PA

Hey Phil! No it isn't a typo, the race starts in waves, the solo males go first, 5 minutes after the solo females, then the waves for male teams, which can be more than 2 go on every 5 minutes, then the female teams, then the co-eds.

We started a while after the first wave had gone off and the very first male and female runners had already finished the running portion and were attacking the obstacles.

The obstacles have marine hurdles, which are high, climbing nets, also high, balance beams, which I think were at chest level, and a crawl net. I have terrible ankles and I was allowed to bypass them, but I made sure to wait for my DH who did all of them. This year I am determined to actually do them all.

I didn't make the 15 minute mile, it was my first race and I started off way too strong and lost all my steam before halfway, sorta soldiered on and managed to go at about 20 min mile pacing. I was lucky I was on the first wave of co-ed teams so I didn't get left too far behind and DH and I solved all the clues extremely fast so we made up some time in the end.

They should be just fine if they do the race at the pace their normally do it and keep their heads together for the clues. :thumbsup2

And BTW I just registered last week and today I am calling to reserve my room at AKL I am excited!!!
I am thinking about doing the ToT 5K to get my third medal. Hmmm;)

I am still not sure about this one! I am deffinatly doing RFTT and ToT, but since I don't have a buddy to run it with I am not sure if it will be that fun??? Plus I am cr** at scavenger hunts. On the other hand its something new I havent tried. Decisions decisions!!!!

Well, a friend of mine ran it solo because her team mate dropped off at the very last second. She said it was a blast and everybody running around her was very nice, plus the CM's cheering her on.

She didn't get all the clues right, but we found a lot of people were thinking way too hard, the clues were very easy if you were literal or just thought a tiny lil bit, people thought it was way more difficult than it actually was.

Even if you don't get all the clues you get a medal and just the whole experience was a blast. DH and I managed to get all our clues right, and you can always ask other solo runners for a hand ;)

I don't think the bonus medal is available if you do the TOT 5k - it would have to be the 13k.

I think that they are in the 16 to 17.5 range so short of being in the very last group I don't think that it will be a problem. They have been working out and this gives them a nice little goal for down the road for sure.

Thanks a bunch I am sure this will make them feel better.

Hmmm... I def can't do a 13K :scared1:
I tried looking for more info on the RFTTR and couldn't. They have the 3K for that too, but if they won't do the medal for the 5K, doubt they'll do it for the 3K ah well.:confused3

Anybody knows of a link with good info on that third medal?

I just realized Dh and my AP's expire Oct. 1; does anyone know if I can apply the passes we get with registration towards renewing our AP's?

You can only get the medal if you compete the longer runs, i received this email for disney sports: The longer distance races count for the bonus fall endurance series medal. For example, you will need to complete Disney's Race for the Taste 10K AND the Tower of Terror 13K within the time requirements and in the same calendar year to get the bonuse medal. The 3K and 5K ARE NOT eligible races. Thanks, Disney Sports

My DH and I signed up for this challenge a few weeks ago. I am really excited - it is my first race of any kind. I'm not athletic at all, so it is my goal to be in shape by the time this race rolls around. I'm kinda scared of the obstacle course though...I am really NOT athletic :scared1:. DH, on the other hand, is very athletic. Grr!! We were originally going to do the 13K ToT marathon, but I told him there was NO WAY I would be able to do 8 miles!!! This race sounds like so much fun!

I have a logistics question - here's my situation:

DH and I have a DS5 and my parents live in FL...so I'm thinking that DS would run the kids run then we'd ask my parents to come and take care of DS while we run. But then afterward the park is open for the "after party" for runners, right?

So my questions are:
A. are kids who participate in the kids run invited to stay?

and B. do they allow spectators during the race, i.e. would my parents and DS be able to hang and cheer us on?

but then C. it would be weird to then partake in the party and send my parents back to the resort, huh?

Any thoughts? How do other folks with little guys work this type of thing? Just skip the after party? Spring for a character dinner for DS and Grandma and Grandpa so they get their own night out?

You can buy extra party tickets so your whole family can celebrate with you.
If you had a party ticket then you could see people running in the park, if not then you would watch from the start / finish line.

Excellent, thanks! Now to just talk DH into adding a couple of days to our already planned trip so we can do this!

I think I have talked my next door neighbor into it!:cool1: We are both turning 40 this fall and need some incentive to get into shape. This will fit the bill to celebrate both. Is anyone taking advantage of the free dining during this time. I am debating FD vs the discounted room rate with the race. Any thoughts or advice? TIA!:goodvibes

Bummer! But thank you so much for sharing that info! :thumbsup2

DH and I just took advantage of the discounted rates at AKL, the rack rate can be about $100 dollars more sometimes. I thought about going to a value and doing the free dining, but DH crunched some numbers and it came up to a loss for us, it IS a lot of food and we wouldn't want to eat too much before the race and all.
