Hi
anyone have a bad knee? Dr says brusitis, I hope that by losing weight it gets better. I love the ellipitical but I am afraid it will hurt my knee. Any advice for exercise

It looks like there are various types of bursitis, just looking online. You really should talk to your doctor and your gym - in many cases, exercise is good for it, and stretching as well. But I'm seeing online pages discussing getting physical therapy, so the people you really need to talk to are the ones who #1 said you had it and #2 - are professionally able to work around or with bursitis. I am studying to be a personal trainer, but I think that someone really needs to see you to say what you can do.

In the meantime, you can still do your upper body exercises, abs, etc. Just have someone look at the knee first before seeing if you can do a walking regimen, or exercise bike, elliptical, or none of those. Maybe swimming will be okay.

I can't speak for your particular condition (only your doc should do that), but I find the elliptical to be the best overall for my knee joints, which are simply weak, not inflamed. It gives them weight-bearing exercise with no impact.

There is also a machine at our gym which allows for cardio workouts w/o using your legs at all. It's like a lifecycle you work with your arms.

The elliptical is really good for that, because of the way you move your legs - as opposed to up/down, which takes more strength.

Had arthiscopic knee surgery on left knee in August 06 and right knee January 16. I will have to have a cartilidge transplant on the left one in June. My doctor recommends biking, and swimming/ water aerobics for exercise to minimize shock to the knee.

Thanks Everyone
I appreciate all the advice. I will try biking next trip to the gym, I have done the treadmill the past few days, OWWWWWWWW is all I can say. I keep hoping the pain will stop

I agree with those who advised to check with your doc or those in the doc office.

Our ortho doc always recommends swimming as the #1 choice, then recumbant bicycle as #2. However, I'm not sure about the recumbant or any bicycle with knee issue. TM is definately out or any walking (impact) is out until the knees start to feel better based on what I've heard others are told as well as what our ortho says.

Good luck on you quest. It is difficult when the pains are prohibiting our movement. Don't give up.

Let us know how you are doing.

No advice, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I am kind of in the no man's land of knowing I am a candidate for the future replacement of both knees, but not quite at the point of being ready to go for surgery yet.

I definitely agree with all the posters who have said that you should let a qualified Dr make the determination of what is appropriate for you. Hang in there, do what you can!
