Exclusive Baby Gorilla Photos! (plus bonus Trip Report) - June '15 - completed 10/23 - Page 31

Loveeee the Baby Gorilla pics! Super cute!!
Looks like the new Harambe Market is pretty neat, I will definitely have to check it out! Great update, as always.

Thanks! The baby gorillas were the best :)

I can see Harambe being a place where I want to try something different, but don't want to miss out on the curry sausages.

Holy update! Fantastic! Great Safari pics. I love that I have seen the lions out more. I'm hopeful we'll see them on Sunday! Yes, Sunday. 6 days from now!

Whoa! That's so cool!

Awesome baby gorilla shots. I can't believe how bit Lilly is!

Yeah, she's huge! I wonder if we'll see her with a baby years down the road?

Sorry you didn't get too wet on Kali. I enjoy the water on hot days.

Yeah, no fair! Conversely, we rode the log ride at Dorney Park on a cool evening the week after the trip and got SOAKED.

Those corn dogs look interesting. Might have to give them a try!

They were great!

I totally got your Coral Reef reference before you explained it!

You'll see it pop up again in this TR. Perhaps at Coral Reef.

Um...Dylan looks like a giant next to Emily.

He's huge as well! I think I only have two inches on him now. He shot up in the last year. Almost weighs as much as I do, too.

Have a GREAT time!

Disappointed all 4 members of the family didn't get a hair wrap ;)

Only if I also get the Jack Sparrow bandana.

Generally I hear positive reviews of Sci Fi especially if you are in the mood for that more casual food (burgers, fries, etc.) - plus the shakes are great and if you are on the DP I think it includes shakes as your drink which are great.

The steak is delicious. One of the better ones. Great theming, too. All around, it's a winner!

That is cool they had the Cinderella carriage there. Hopefully they do more stuff like that at the Studios - Disney certainly has enough movies coming out that will need promotion. I wonder if the agreement between Disney and Universal over the Marvel licenses includes having movie props in the parks :confused3

Any props would be cool, IMO. I really hope they don't phase out the whole "Hollywood" thing. Keep that element alive, too.

Well, based on this past weekends news, you were just a bit early referring to the Studios having Star Wars Land. And they did say that the shops, etc. will be run the proper inhabitants of the land ... no mention if that will go for the DJs or not.

I'm hoping for a fellow diner to tell me his friend, and he, don't like me. Then comes the arm loppin'.

Oh, and you have to watch Episodes 4-6 and then 1-3 ... as Sheldon Cooper says, I prefer to let George Lucas disappoint me in the order he intended. .... you can get the disappointment out of the way early (though, must admit I kinda liked episode III)

I don't know if I saw that episode, but I can imagine Sheldon saying that :)

Ah, I miss Musikfest. Definitely a fun time - plus you can knock some of your Christmas Shopping out early

They got the "teen hooligan" situation down by the hotel under control this year, too! Relatively quiet. It was a year without police horse punchings, which is definitely good.

It's funny how with the Safari everyone takes the same pictures but feels the need to take them anyway as it is one of those unwritten Disney rules. (Same goes for Cinderella's Castle and the Fountains in EPCOT)

Every

year

Yeah for the baby gorilla shots! Very cute. I wonder if Lilly is now jealous of the new gorillas getting all the attention she used to get. I mean, when she takes her ball and leave it's like she is thinking "screw you guys, I'm going home!" Then she comes back and is playing with the ball thinking "aw, aren't I cute playing with my ball here?!?!?!" (yes, I my head Lilly has the same voice as Eric Cartman)

From what the CM said, she didn't really seem jealous, and was really good with the babies. She was a little worse when they were first born.

Sorry you didn't get more wet on Kali. Those water fountains are a favorite of my kids - definitely more soaking occurs there than on the ride (even if we do get soaked on the ride)

Our kids used to sit in them. You can imagine how wet.

The new quick service option in AK looks pretty cool and nice to have other options. Also up for more, different options when it comes to theme park food. And that is cool they have the club cool soda options there.

We should get Park Hopper, just so we can eat lunch in this park on Hollywood Studios days :)

Oh my goodness, you just made my youngest's day!! He discovered Bibo on our trip in July, and absolutely loves it. We actually visited Club Cool at least three times so he could get a cup of Bibo! We will definitely be stopping at that quick service on our next trip. :thumbsup2

Kristin doesn't like Bibo, but I love it! It was perfect in the heat, too. I wish there were more CC drinks around Disney.

Since I outed myself on another TR...I Love reading your trip reports!

Yeah, no sense hiding now. Oh, and welcome!

The next installment of "Our Summer Outing at Animal Kingdom" starts NOW!

Our stomachs full, it was time to try to shake those corn dogs and Bibo loose with a trip up the mountain.

Don't play dumb. You know which mountain.

THAT mountain. Behind the refurb wall. Animal Kingdom is like a mouse maze these days.

But, as often happens in my Trip Reports, the lead-in photo for the update happens after a bunch of other stuff, and I end up backtracking. However, in the interest of getting to the mountain already, I'm going to breeze through those, without text.

I think you can figure out what was happening in those photos. We were taking photos. Basically.

Wait, Dinoland CMs in Asia?

Use the Utiladors, guys! And no, "there are no Utiladors in Animal Kingdom" is NOT a valid excuse. UNACCEPTABLE. Don't let it happen again.

The kids jack a ride...

The apes go nutty...

And the girls do an old-school upvote of a comment from Walt Disney:

Another Asia pic:

...and we're here! Let's see if Emily meets the height requirement:

She do!

We got that same photo the first year she was tall enough to ride, and every year after. No telling when we'll stop.

So, on the ride we go, using our last pre-scheduled FPs of the day.

As Disney has the tendency to do, the queue is themed heavily:

Yet that's the only photo I got of it. We were on the ride in no time and up the first hill:

All the way to the top now. Apparently, throwing pony tail bands is a thing now.

Beats gum, I 'spose.

The track shifts, we go flying backwards, the yeti rips up the track, the track shifts again, we go forward, a camera takes our photo, we go down the big hill, the yeti appears again in all his animatronic glory, and we're at the end:

GREAT ride! All of us agree that it's one of our favorites. But we don't plan on doing it 4 times straight, like last year. I think that crushed our energy levels.

Speaking of energy levels, remember how I only slept a few hours last night? Well, I've been truckin' along all day, due to the excitement. However, my fatigue-resistance was about to be tested in a way I would have to really fight to overcome.

Finding Nemo: The Musical

No, no, no. The show is not boring. Far from it. In fact, it's fantastic. But I'm REALLY tired. My eyes are rolling around in my head as I sit in the theater, knowing full well that eyes closed = out like a light.

But I made it through the show, partly because I enjoy it, but mostly because of the hard-wood-across-the-middle-of-my-back seating in this theater. Not ideal sleeping conditions, if you ask me. Plan better, Disney. Or "thanks" for keeping me from dozing off. One of those things.

Well, that was fun, as always! And sorry, I didn't get any pictures. Too tired to lift my arm. I'm hurtin'. Let's get back outside and ride Everest again.

Yep, you heard that right. Back to Everest.

And while we won't be riding it 4 times in a row, we will ride it twice now, single-rider.

We line it up so the kids are seated chronologically between Kristin and me (i.e., Kristin's is taken to the train first, I go last), though not really geographically (i.e., they're each at least 10 rows in front of us). Anyway, doing it that way ensures that one of us is off before or at the same time as they are, and one is off after or at the same time as they are.

We're seated with strangers, but it's all good. I'm with a kid who is probably Emily's age, and the parents, seated behind us, tell me I can tell him to be quiet if he gets annoying. I tell them I have plenty of experience with annoying ride partners, but they assure me I ain't seen nothin' yet.

Well, the kid was vocal, but really not THAT bad. Probably because he's not my kid. But hey, I did take some photos this time!

Now, if you're wondering how I managed to get that photo of Kristin, and why the kids are seated together, while we ride single rider, there's an interesting story behind it.

Well, not that interesting. Truth be told, those were taken the first time we rode EE today, with the FPs. And when we were walking back from the Finding Nemo: The Musical. I just started typing about it while assuming those photos were from the later rides. See, had I taken pictures during Nemo, I would've noticed this. So it's all MY fault. Don't try to deny it.

Anyway, we rode one more time, and the only photo I got was this one:

I was with an adult this time, but Kristin was with a really little girl, whom she said was hilarious and a blast to ride with.

Off of Everest, and this ride is in the books for this year. Single rider was about a 10 minute wait, tops. Well worth it, and we made use of single rider lines other times along this trip as well.

After wards, we walked over to get a picture of the girls with Kristin's favorite sign...

..and it's off to Dinoland!

...but not yet.

We had earlier decided against waiting in line for a 4th set of FPs, since the lines weren't really that bad today. But we did want frozen drinks. Not that the two are related in any way, but we're at that part of the story. So here goes.

On our way, I attempted and failed to get a photo of the sitar player over by Yak and Yeti:

But I did get a photo of this:

Blue raspberry. Soooo good. Dylan got, and observed, a frozen Coke:

And I photographed, and observed, this:

Not sure if there's a Hidden Mickey in there, but I'm not seeing it right now. There are three, I believe, in that store, and they're not easy to find.

As for the girls, they liked their drinks, too:

Quick shot of Tom Sawyer Island...

...and it's (finally) on to Dinoland, USA!

We finally saw Jurassic World (I know, we should've seen it before August), and I assure you, this is NOTHING like that. Less geteatenbygeneticallymutateddinosaursy, to be blunt.

Befoe we go in, I snap this photo of I don't remember what this is going to be in the future now:

But back to the dinos, here's one:

Less frightening than the ones in that non-Disney film, wouldn't you say?

This one's scarier than the last, but in a Super Mario Bros Dry Bones kind of way:

So just jump on him, and leave before he rebuilds. Nonetheless, he's dead, and fake, so he poses no threat to us. Unlike that awful aquatic thing in Jursassic World.

See, the more realistic looking ones are nice:

Stickin' his butt out for the photo :) What a ham!

Standby is like 15 minutes, so we're going in.

Since Dylan refuses to do it, Emily recreates a classic Dylan photo from the past:

I am equally scared by dinosaurs:

But not this dinosaur:

Although the neighborhood he's in looks a little rough.

The Disney-trained eye will notice that was clearly take AFTER we rode Dinosaur, which is true.

So, what about the ride?

Well, they still have Claire Huxtable in the intro, which is great. And the ride, which we missed last year, is phenomenal. So intense, so dark, so crazy. The Carnotaurus encounters are some of my favorite times at Disney. I love this one, though I tend to overlook it in my Top Fives year after year.

Anyway, we're back outside in the Dinoland heat. One last photo of Dino-Rama...

...and we're out!

We skipped a fair amount of things, but they were things we've done the last several years, year after year, so it's no big deal. I'm talking Primeval Whirl, Flights of Wonder, and the Festival of the Lion King. FotL was any easy skip after seeing La Nouba, to be honest. La Nouba was like that show times fifteen.

Some fun facts about baby gorillas before we leave...

And some carved fake wood shots:

I think these are new?

Looks like even the Tree can't stay clear of the construction:

They should at least camoflague the crane. Or cover it with carved fake animals. Or fun facts about baby gorillas.

One more photo as we leave...

...and we're at the bus stop.

This was sort of my backup day header "6" shot, and was quite possibly better than the blurry on-the-run 6-at-Expedition-Everest photo I ended up using. But maybe too small. Writing these Trip Reports is hard. Lots of difficult decisions.

The bus arrived right around 2:30, and we left Animal Kingdom far earlier than we had planned, but still felt we had a full day. We were satisfied. Now, it's back to Caribbean Beach.

My notes for this part read, "J&E swim, D play video game, K nap", which I now find bizarre given the fact that I was dead tired earlier in the day. But I got that second wind, baby. Somehow. I can't really explain it.

Emily and I didn't swim for long, but the time we did spend in the pool was about 10% sliding and 75% watching Emily do handstands and keeping her from kicking other swimmers. She's doing front flips underwater now, too, which account for the remaining 15%.

I didn't take the camera with me this time, but I think you've seen plenty of the pool for one Trip Report. And you'll see more of it later.

Back to the room now, where it's showers for all and getting dressed for dinner. We're trying Shutters for the first time E-VAH tonight, and we can't go in wet bathing suits.

(next update)

Single Rider is a great feature! The fact that you all can get on pretty much the same train, why bother waiting stand by? I'm surprised more people haven't caught on to that. I hope they don't!

I love that you guys ride EE as much as we do! It's an awesome ride!!! I noticed those hair rubber bands the 1000 times I rode EE in December, and might have contributed a few myself. :rolleyes1
Great pics!

Sounds like a pretty productive afternoon - always found it tough to be in AK an entire day with no breaks .... always feels like it is about 10 degrees warmer there than other parks

Animal Kingdom is like a mouse maze these days.

Well, they do say that Disney World was a human trap set by a mouse ;)

the yeti appears again in all his animatronic glory

More like all is inanimatronic / disco lighting glory. Glad I had gotten to ride it once when the yeti was actually working, definitely takes a bit away from it now - though still a great ride

Great update!

Guess where I am right now? The Polynesian! Yes, I am responding to your update live from Disney World! :earsgirl: We are resting after spending the day in Epcot....going back later for dinner at Chefs de France.

Tomorrow is our last day. While this trip has had some stress and it has been HOT we will be sad to leave.

The baby gorillas are adorable. We love the gorillas anyway and always spend a good amount of time watching them. I'm totally jealous that you got to see the babies, and I won't get to. :)

I admit that I've never watched an entire Star Wars movie. They just don't hold my attention. Love the ride, though!

I think some tour groups have, but fortunately, not that many, in my experience. The saving grace of the tour groups is they are typically not "Disney-savvy", and therefore don't use the shortcuts ous DISers take advantage of.

Thanks!

Everest is fantastic. Nothing else in the world like it.
I think Disney should make up some story about WHY hairband sacrifices to the Yeti happen, but don't know that they want to be encouraging it :)

I believe that.

A few years back, it did seem like the Yeti was tucked back farther into the hole (or simply less brightly lit)...but now, when I ride, I think, "how much farther down could he have been?" I'll have to watch some old videos to get perspective on that.

This is so cool! It's fun responding to TRs from WDW. It's sort of like, "oh yeah, that thing you're talking about...I'll be doing that later today." :)
Tomorrow is our last day. While this trip has had some stress and it has been HOT we will be sad to leave.
:(
Though I'm sure your trip was awesome!
The baby gorillas are adorable. We love the gorillas anyway and always spend a good amount of time watching them. I'm totally jealous that you got to see the babies, and I won't get to. :)
They were great! We saw Lilly when she was a newborn, too, but nowhere near as visibly as we did with these two. She was out of sight on some of our later trips, unfortunately. But I agree - ANY gorilla is good to see!

I admit that I've never watched an entire Star Wars movie. They just don't hold my attention. Love the ride, though!
Similarly, I haven't seen Avatar, but think the area in AK dedicated to it will be awesome!

I'm going to try to wrap up Day 6 tonight, but several days of not enough sleep + kickboxing classes have me running on fumes today. I do tend to get a second wind at 5:00 pm on Fridays, though, so we'll see :)

Thanks, everyone, for reading!

The baby gorillas are so cute!! Totally regretting not finding our way back to the gorillas this year.

I never noticed all the ponytail bands on Everest before, probably because I was holding on for my life/trying not to look down.

Dinosaur is always a ton of fun. Weird seeing the Dino CMs in other parts of the park though. And I agree that the cranes should have more baby gorilla facts. We heard them more than we saw them, but that's a really unfortunate view!

Great updates! I need to remember to actually comment instead of reading them on my iPad and commenting days later.

Great update! Love the reference to AK being a mouse maze  We couldn't believe all of the construction walls they had when we were there last week! A sign of good things to come, I suppose!

Just read your whole report and I'm loving your writing style. I can't wait for more :goodvibes

I'm such a dunce.....I actually thought the ponytail holders were a part of the ride itself. I even mentioned it in my trip report....o_O Like the imagineers wanted to show how scared the explorers were on Everest.....it scared the ponytails clear out of their hair. Boy is my face red

Ooh, you missed out.

I never noticed all the ponytail bands on Everest before, probably because I was holding on for my life/trying not to look down.

That's actually the correct riding position.

Dinosaur is always a ton of fun. Weird seeing the Dino CMs in other parts of the park though. And I agree that the cranes should have more baby gorilla facts. We heard them more than we saw them, but that's a really unfortunate view!

At the very least, have construction workers in animal-themed character.

Great updates! I need to remember to actually comment instead of reading them on my iPad and commenting days later.

No worries! I haven't checked this in...well, a day. But it's all good anyway.

I keep telling myself that! I'm sure the finished product will be amazing.

I like your story better.

Alright, let's wrap this day up!

Rested up, swam up, hungry up, or whatever, we're dressed and ready for dinner. Tonight's ADR was in flux during the entire lead up to this trip. First, it was Maya Grill, since we were originally booked at Coronado Springs. Then, we switched to CBR. We initially kept the MG ADR, but switched it to Shutters soon after the resort switch. Not sold on Shutters, I took some advice from KatMark about Olivia's, and we were then slated to go there. However, Kristin couldn't sell herself on the menu, so back to Shutters it was.

And that's where we're headed now. But it's all the way over there...

Alright, a few more shots from in front of our building...

...and we're there!

For those who don't know, this restaurant is at...

And here's what the super-small waiting area looks like:

And here's Emily's shake:

Oh, by the way, we're seated already!

Ok, not really "already" - it was about a ten-minute wait - but that part of the story is boring, so here we are. Seated, and with beverages. I can't tell from the photo if Emily's drink is a strawberry shake or a raspberry smoothie, and my notes ("v shake") aren't really helping. But it was good, whatever it was. As was my Red Stripe:

At Disney, I typically select the beer that fits the theme the best. Caribbean...Red Stripe. No-brainer.

Here's Emily's "v shake":

...which means the first photo was Dylan's drink. Which my notes say is a "choc shake", so I'm even more confused. Can you tell I start typing before looking at the photos that are coming up next?

However, the more I look at it, the more it seems like that IS a chocolate shake, but the lighting is doing some sort of weird blue-sweater-with-gold-trim mind trick on me, so the shake looks pink. But it's not. It's brown.

Which explains the glass-orbiting streak of chocolate syrup, I guess.

Now that we have that straightened out, the meals arrive:

Or, at least the rolls.

The bread was good, but not as good as this:

Nowhere near as good as that. In fact, this was my favorite steak of the entire trip. That's saying something, considering we still have Le Cellier and Narcoossee's coming up, later in the trip.

Technically, it's nothing fancy: "Char-crusted 10-oz New York Strip Steak - Smoked Gouda and Chorizo Mac & Cheese, Seasonal Vegetable, and Chimichurri". Ok, I guess the chimichurri makes it a bit fancy. And the mac & cheese was unbelievable. Too good, however, since Emily kept trying to hog it from me.

Anyway, I fell in love with this steak. I wish I could see it again. The miles are awful. But our time together was special.

Kristin got the same, and also enjoyed it. To the same degree? Well, that's open for debate.

By the way, did you notice? Once again, Disney = asparagus. They must have purchased some giant asparagus conglomerate without us knowing, too. Look for the Kingdom Hearts tie-in, plus a limited-time-only appearance by Asparagus Man (the official mascot of the Asparagus Growers Association of America) at Epcot's How-Dare-You-Get-Rid-Of-Duffy Character Spot.

Dylan got the "Pork Two Ways - crispy Pork Belly, Grilled Tenderloin, Nassau Grits, and White Barbecue Sauce"...

...which I loved, too, but he wasn't completely sold on. He's still a REALLY picky eater.

I ended up taking half of it back to the room for breakfast tomorrow. Yep, nothing epitomizes the "Disney breakfast" for me like hand-eating a pork tenderloin while ironing.

Emily decided to flip up her usual mac & cheese order, opting for the pizza. Officially called "Cheese Pizza - served with choice of one (1) Beverage and one (1) Dessert":

(Shutters doesn't have a kids m&c)

I'm a huge fan of Disney kid's meal pizza, so I get my revenge on her for her Smoked Gouda and Chorizo Mac & Chees thievery. Plus, there's no way she'll eat all of that.

During the meal, I couldn't stop gushing about how perfectly my medium rare steak was cooked:

Everything about this meal was perfect. Even our waitress is phenomenally nice, which always makes the dinner better for me (and most people). Bring your "A" game. We tip well.

Now, let's see if the desserts hold up:

Well, that was Emily's Yogurt Parfait, which came with the kids meal. Good, but not the main event:

In order of appearance, "Warm Cinnamon-White Chocolate Bread Pudding - Butterscotch and Cinnamon Sauce", "Flancocho - Silky Flan, Chocolate Cake, Caramel Sauce, and Pretzel Brittle", and "Tres Leche Cake".

I didn't write down who got what, but I know I didn't get the flan, 'cuz I don't do the flan. The bread pudding sounds right, which also makes up for Raglan Road. Sort of. Ok, it's nowhere near as good as Raglan Road's, but what bread pudding is?

We all enjoyed our desserts, though my difficulty remembering them shows that they weren't the best on the trip. And this wasn't the best meal. But it was pretty darned close. And the competition is tough.

Overall, we were very happy with this choice in ADR and had a wonderful time here. We're looking forward to coming back, sometime.

Plus, we were already home. It's out through Old Port Royale...

...and back to the room.

But not yet! It's a beautiful evening, so we walk past the pool for a turtle shot:

And a hammock shot:

And another:

Awww...

I this this one concluded with one or both of them on their backs, in the sand, dumped from the hammock. But I cannot confirm.

Maybe this bird can:

Because this clown surely can't:

Back to the room now, with a quick shot of Jamaica...

...and we're home! Kristin sits in a chair on the beach, while the kids play in the sand. I have other plans.
