Is the exchange rate really good right now?? I'm thinking of paying off my trip NOW! :goodvibes

I think the exchange rate is really good right now. It is as low as 13% to buy and it can easily climb back up to 18% in just a few days.

I have purchased some recently because of how low it is. :cool1:

:thumbsup2

I heard it is the best it has been since 9/11. I would go and get your money now.

Last week they were saying it's the highest it's been since Sept 06, I got some cash last week at $1.12.

As of this minute.. 1$ US costs 1.1320 Canadian at the TD Bank.

So.. $113.20 gets you 100$ US.

Good deal for sure. It's the one upside of high fuel prices.. commodity price increases support the Canadian dollar.

How does it work if I charge my trip balance to my RBC Visa... pretty close to the same?

The exchange rate to buy American money right now is excellent, according to the teller at CIBC today. But to buy it back is not as good, I went to exchange the american money I had left over from shopping this weekend, and I ended up just keeping it out for my trip now, but it is much cheaper to buy than exchange back.

There is always a difference between what you buy money for and what you sell it for. You will always loose money if you sell it back to the bank.

If you charge the trip to a credit card, they will convert it at the current rate but you will have to pay a service charge (about 2.5%) in addition to the exchange.

This is how they banks make $300 million dollars profit a year.

So if you buy money, don't converit it back, just keep it. Travellers cheques are a safe way to keep it.

If you have to charge a purchase, the exchange rate is still very good right now. It was 15% not that long ago. :coffee:

Do they take traveller's cheques as payment upon check in at the front desk at Disney resorts?

Yes they take traveller's cheques at the resorts. I always take traveller's cheques to put on my room at check in instead of a credit card or cash. I found almost everywhere takes traveller's cheques.

Just FYI - Capital One is the only credit card company in Canada that does NOT charge the 2.5 % premium on foreign transactions.

We too find the premium that credit cards companies charge on the exchange annoying. Last trip we did what others have suggested and used traveller's cheques (we did put a credit card on the room but paid the balance the night before check out with traveller's cheques). This trip we're doing something different. Driving down with a combination of cash and traveller's cheques was too much of a pain. So many gas stations require prepayment for cash purchases. This trip we are going to use a TD US dollar Visa card. Since we keep US cash in a TD US dollar bank account it is easy to pay when we get back.

Yay! Maybe we'll do this instead!

They do take traveller's cheques, just be careful if you want to charge to your room, make sure you pay with your traveller's cheques the night before you check out. The last time we went we tried to pay with traveller's cheques and told them we would do so when we checked in. Unfortunately when we went to check out they had already charged my visa (i had it set up to be able to make charges with our room key). I tried to get them to reverse it so I could use my traveller's cheques but unfortunately they did a return which meant a different exchange rate and I lost about $40.00, I was so upset when we got home that I had to pay a double exchange rate-- one with Visa and the one I had paid with my traveller's cheques :sad2: so just be careful, pay the night before you go!!! Have a great Trip!!!

I'm confused... you can't pay off the room completely with TCs right at the beginning??

You can definitely use TCs to pay the balance of a room-only reservation upon check in. coconutsunshine was talking about giving them a credit card upon check in to allow charging to the room. If you go to the front desk the evening before you check out you can pay the amount off with TCs instead of having them charge it to your CC. Instead of a CC Reese gives the resort to act as a deposit to allow room charging.

Oh, okay. So I can pay off my room in TCs right away. Then, I can give them a CC for room charging, come back the night before check out and pay off my room CHARGES with TCs too. And nothing is charged to a CC.

Do I have it now?

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you, I must have misread your post. Like cslittle999 said I was talking about charges you make during your stay... sorry for the confusion :confused3
