How about having an exchange-rate watch thread?

Each day (or couple of days) we could post the exchange rate from a couple of places and check how it is doing.

Anybody interested? :confused3

Today's Rates:

M&S = $1.855
OnlineFX = $1.8573
The Post Office = $1.8286

:wizard:

Go here: http://www.xe.com/ucc/ to find out what the business rate is - then you can decide how good your tourist rate deal is.

Today is 1 GBP = 1.90851 USD

To get the best deal you should also compare the comission fees to the rates - just because its commission free doesn't make it the best deal.

Go here for more info on getting the best rate: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1113837551,13799,

There's a link there to a forum discussing how to get the best currency deal, including whether you should use credit cards instead.

PS I'm not involved in these sites in anyway - the money saving expert is my next favourite forum after this one - helping me save those ££ ready for my trip to Disney :0)

I agree this is a good idea!
and with you Rosiejo, the moneysaver has some excellent tips!
By the way the rate seems to have dropped today :confused3 $1.8444 on Travelex. Hope it goes up again!

Yes, the rate has sadly dropped today :( but only by a very little! :)

M&S = $1.835

Think positive thoughts everyone :teeth:

The Federal Reserve put the US Base Interest Rate up today by 0.25% and have apparently signalled that future similar rises may not be too far off. This suggests at that we are going to see the exchange rate start to fall again. Probably not by much, but I don't think we'll see too many days with $1.87 rates again this year if this news pans out as the markets seem to think it will.

Oh and by the way, Travelex was $1.8444 today.

Great thread. I'll watch this one with interest (no pun intended) :)

Really?? Might go buy some currency now then as we're not flying out until November.

Will it make any difference if our base rate goes up by a quarter point (as expected) on Monday?

Think I might get ours soon but as we are going to California I have been told they are not so geared up for taking TC so are going to opt to take more in cash and use the credit card more, anyone know different?

Tiggerlady - I've been to Californa on several ocasions and have had absolutely no problem using TCs.

As for this exchange rate drop - help - do the experts amongst you think it might go up again soon? Or should I buy now. I was away on business last week and missed the 1.85 rate!!!!!!

No one knows what's goign to happen to the rate for sure, if they did they'd make a mint.

Get yourselves a NATIONWIDE card! Been posted loads on here. I was in NY two weeks ago, got rates of between $1.90 - $1.92 with no comission or anything to pay. I also drew out a fair bit of cash (Nationwide flex account) to save incase the rate dropped too much. I go to Vegas in July, if the rate continues to drop I'll just stock up on cash whilst out there, using the Nationwide of course :)
