The american express card available at Lunn Poly/Thomsons is offering exchange rate of $187.4. Put ₤400 on card and get $750.

Has anyone used one of these cards?

We looked into this at the weekend and they offered us a rate of $1.76 :(

I think that is the actual rate($1.76)- ₤400=$700, but the offer is get $50 dollars free, so the exchange rate is then equivelent to $1.87 dollars. I checked today in shop. The offer is supposed to end next week tho. It isn't worth getting much more than ₤400 on card as it brings rate down. DH and I are getting one each with $750 on each. They can be used at restuarants and for tickets etc(like a credit card) with no charge, but there is a fee if an ATM machine is used,($2.50) I think each time.
They usually charge ₤20 for these cards but at the moment free,so seems like a good deal.

Would anyone be interested in starting an exchange rate thread?

The idea being that if someone happens to go into a travel agent and sees the exchange rate, they can post it here for anyone elses reference?

And if you hear of any special deals going on (like American Express offering $50 free dollars if you get $1000).

I know I'd be checking it!

Anyone else?
HI
MARKS AND SPENCER USUALLY OFFERS BEST RATE TODAY WAS 1.78

Maybe this is a dumb question, but is there any way of knowing how much is left on the card when you are using it (other than keeping a note yourself - past history indicates I would be rubbish at doing that!). And can you just use it anywhere that accepts Amex?

This is info from the leaflet I picked up at Thomsons:
Card never expires and can be topped up whilst away.
Card accepted wherever there is the American Express logo.
BALANCE can be checked online or by phoning any time.
Funds are replaced withinn 24 hours if card is stolen/lost

Don't you have to book a holiday with thomas cook to get the card for free - at the time of booking?

I'm not sure about the card and am still trying to make my mind up about it!

Thomas Cook are offering a different deal. They offer more free dollars(up to $100) the more you put on card. They also charge ₤15 for card.

Thomson/Lunn Poly deal is different. They offer $50 free as long as you put $700 or more on card. There card is free and you don't have to have booked with them. Offer is supposed to finish this weekend.

They are stopping travellers cheques thats why they have bought out the card. I agree it will be difficult to keep track of how much is left.

I can confirm the message about the Amex TC card at Thompsons travel agents.

Just returned from my local store where I have purchased 2 cards (one in my name one in my wifes) and although the official rate for the card is $1.74 to the £1, I got an additional $50 for putting $700 on the card, and they are waiving the £20 purchase fee until Monday.

End result, £1500 for a total outlay of £802 (on 2 seperate cards) gives an actual exchange rate of 1.87

Got our Money changed today.

One travel agent at the trafford centre (mcr) was willing to give you 1.80 and there was no commission charge the catch being you had to change more than £1000 into travellers cheques.

My DW wanted one of these new cards as its easier than carrying money or cheques as they work as a switch or debit card.
The rate for that was 1.75 and if we put on over $700 on we would get $50 free. Also there was no charge for the card.

In total we change £1500 over in to 2 accounts so that we got an extra $100 spending money. We came out $10 better off than than the 1.80 rate with the convience of a card.

I would say to those who are wanting to get these cards: I think the offer of $50 finishes on Saturday 17th September. Also when asking for the exchange rate ask what it is on the card as it sometimes changes, as we found out.
