Everything Old Is New Again! - A Dec 2010 Trip Report : THE FINAL ENTRY page 45

We were making our way clockwise around World Showcase and had just left merry old England, heading over to Canada. I could hear Off Kilter playing was getting pretty excited to see them. Between the two pavilions is a fairly nondescript set of large wooden gates. I've been past there dozens of times and have never seen them open. I just assumed they led to a backstage area and were always kept closed. But as we walked past them, we noticed that the gate on the right was open about 1/2 way. I went over to peek in, and what do you suppose I find?

Characters!!!!!

Including the Holy Grail of our Character Quest - but more on him in a bit.

While the area is technically "backstage" most of the time, it's still a nice spot. The pathway has a slight uphill climb to it and probably goes on for about 100 feet up to a nice - and very large - blue building. Along the sides were 5' stucco walls complete with nice landscaping and landscape lighting. While waiting in line for one of the characters, I asked a CM what this building was. She said its used for large gatherings - conferences, meetings, etc. And occasionally, for character greetings.

Each wall of the path was lined with about half a dozen miscellaneous characters. And quit an odd mixing it was. We saw:

Wendell from the Country Bears
IMG_4023.JPG

June and Annie from the Little Einsteins.
IMG_4024.JPG

And that's when I saw... him. Ever since we finally found Pocahontas during our October '09 trip report, this character has become the Holy Grail of my children's character hunting. The mythical character only rumored to come around once in a blue moon, never in the same spot twice. Yet, there he was, all the way at the top of the path on the right side. I'm speaking of none other than Goofy's only son, MAX!

IMG_4034.JPG

Max has now been added to my kids' trophy collection! Thus, we currently have an opening for "Holy Grail of Characters Meets" Please submit any requests or ideas as a comment. Thank you.

Other characters that we were able to meet before the CMs called "time" and they all vanished backstage:

Captain Hook

Bolt:

Suzy (from Cinderella)

Meeko (From Pocahontas)

Gideon and Pinocchio

Madison getting a dance with Pniocchio
IMG_4065.JPG

There were a few other characters there, but as I mentioned before, the CMs began shutting down the lines and one by one they disappeared. I know for sure Genie was there, but I can't recall who else. I'm sure Bambi will step in with a few.

Since it wasn't a normal meet & greet location and because there were so many of them, the lines kind of got out of whack. Some characters seemed to have two lines, others just had a bunch of people standing around them with no apparent organization. CMs were trying to keep some order, but seemed to be a losing battle. Over all, though, it was a really fun experience and we would totally do it again if we are ever lucky enough to stumble across something like this!

They had closed the large gate so no more guests could enter, but let those of us already in there finish up with whatever characters were left. We were then let out via a smaller pedestrian door and we continued our trek around through Canada and back to Future World. We had some more Test Track FastPasses to use up before hopping on the monorail for dinner.

We took the monorail (sadly, not the Tronorail) over to the Ticket & Transportation Center then took a nice leisurely stroll over to the Poly's Great Ceremonial House for dinner at Ohana.

Why do Evan and I have matching shirts? Because we're awesome, that's why.

If you recall waaaaaaaay back on the first post of this Trip Report, I posted a picture of Madison at Ohana. If you have forgotten, it looked much like this:
Disney_World_19.jpg

Believe it or not, that was the last time we were at Ohana. Almost 6 years to the day. Why has it taken us so long to get back? I have no idea, but I'm not letting that happen again. I have ADRs there for both our April and June trips this year. :woohoo:

And obviously, Madison didn't take part in any of the entertainment on her last visit. This time, however, she was out there shaking up a storm doing the hula
SDC12675.JPG

We were cruising along, happily eating the chicken wings, the noodles, the shrimp and the pork. Madison was slowly picking at her roast pork when the man with the magical meat skewers came around asking if anyone wanted some steak. All of a sudden that piece of pork on Madison's plate few off, landed on Grandpa's plate and her hand shot up, waving "me! me!" So if anyone is keeping track STEAK > PORK in Madison's world.

A little Polynesian Christmas Cheer:
IMG_4083.JPG

And a few pictures of our looooong walk back to the TTC. Odd how that walk seems twice as long when you're caring 9 extra pounds of meat.

IMG_4090.JPG

No matter how much I played with the settings on my camera, I just couldn't capture how awesome this sight was. There was a bit of a fog in the air and it reflected and glowed with all of the lights from the castle, the train station, the ferry and all of the resorts. This is the best that I could come up with.

Coming Up Next: Illuminations and a long walk home

Great update! Those are some awesome character meet and greets the kids got!

Madison was really funny with the steak situation! Sounds like something my daughter would do!

Your afternoon in Epcot sounds great! I've had the sushi at the CSin Japan(what ever it is called) and didn't really like it. BUT we ate at Teppan Edo for the first time in March and it was top notch! We had the Grilled Crispy Sukiyaki Beef Roll... it was like a philly steak sushi roll. {insert the drooling Homer pic here}

I never knew about that path... you guys saw sooooooo many characters- and so many 'secret' characters too. I will be looking for them the next time we go- when ever that is. :confused3

I love the baby picture of Madison- what a QT.

I swear, 'Ohana needs to supply hand trucks to wheel people out of the restaurant after eating.

Great updates!

:thumbsup2 Wow, awesome score on the character meets there.

Well there you go... now everyone else you meet will be a disappointment by comparison. Congratulations on finally meeting Max though.:lmao:

Max has now been added to my kids' trophy collection! Thus, we currently have an opening for "Holy Grail of Characters Meets" Please submit any requests or ideas as a comment. Thank you.
Darkwing Duck :confused3

Why do Evan and I have matching shirts? Because we're awesome, that's why.
Well, Evan's awesome, so I guess since he's willing to dress like you, we'll let you have this one.:cool2:

All of a sudden that piece of pork on Madison's plate few off, landed on Grandpa's plate and her hand shot up, waving "me! me!" So if anyone is keeping track STEAK > PORK in Madison's world.
She has good taste... I mean, I'm sure the pork is delicious, but if you put roasted pork and steak in front of me... I'm going for the steak.:rotfl2:

No matter how much I played with the settings on my camera, I just couldn't capture how awesome this sight was. There was a bit of a fog in the air and it reflected and glowed with all of the lights from the castle, the train station, the ferry and all of the resorts. This is the best that I could come up with.
That picture really is cool despite the blur from the lights. I'm sure it is a breathtaking sight in person.

It was with my cell phone. And no, I was not the only one in there...:rotfl2:
I'm pretty sure there is an unspoken no photography rule in men's rooms. If men's room pictures start getting out ladies will be jealous of our opulent bathroom situation.

I went over to peek in, and what do you suppose I find?

Characters!!!!!
Wow this is really awesome. (Your mad multicoloral posting skillz and the secret meet and greet.)

Madison is a very smart young lady.

And a few pictures of our looooong walk back to the TTC. Odd how that walk seems twice as long when you're caring 9 extra pounds of meat.
Did you convince the Ohana people to let you walk out with 6 skewers of meat?

These pics are great. I really like the orange glo. Makes it seem so warm.

Kinda of reminds me of the Emerald City in the wizard of Oz.

Nice job on the update

I love your trip reports! Your kids always look so sweet and happy! :)

What you came across was actually a character training session (at least that is what I have been told). It doesn't happen every day, and in the many times we have been to Disney, we have only seen it twice. Great find on the characters!!

The building used to be the Millennial Village. It had stations for countries not on featured in the World Showcase. There was one simulator ride in the Jerusalem area. It was open back in 2000.

Awesome stumbling over the secret character meet and greet!!!!!

Sounds like O'hana was a hit. I discovered the path between the TTC and the POLY and now I can make it back and forth without getting turned around. :lmao: Took me a few tries to formulate the shortest distance to the Ceremonial house. I even have a route that takes me through one of the long houses when it is hot out so I can soak up 2 minutes of AC.

The sight of the castle from the TTC is awesome.

Hey, great trip report :-) Madison is so cute. Congrats on adopting her. She deserves a nice family like you. Its funny that the day you arrived at Disney was when me and my mom were at the Magic Kingdom. We were there from Dec. 3 - Dec. 5. I love the pictures you took of the family. I hope to hear more of your trip report soon :-) Have a "Magical" day!

Bolt and Max how cool! Never seen either of them :) I wanna meet Bolt :)

How cool you stumbled across the secret character lair! And that is definitely a random character assortment!

Steak is always > than pork, except when it's pulled pork, then that's a bit more of a tough call. And now I'm hungry...

Awesome update there Barry.

Love the shirts. Why, because they are awesome.

Madison is a smart girl, so long as she remembers the following:
STEAK > PORK (except bacon)

As for Ohana's we are huge fans after what they did for Megan and her alergies at the time. It has now been promoted to 1st dinner status whenever we travel to WDW. (besides how can you refuse non-stop meat?)

As for the Holy Grail of Characters Quest, I say we nominate Perry the Platypus.

Hey Barry...been MIA to this TR like a congressman from Wisconsin...but I'm all caught up now.

Pretty funny how my Nemisis just showed up. Clearly you can see what I'm up against.

This last episode...you hit the Rare Character Jackpot. I think I found the Location on the map.

My Kids had the pleasure of a Max/Goofy meet back in 2006 on Main Street USA. pirate:pirate:pirate:

I would like to submit Ludwig VonDrake and/or Scrooge McDuck to your quest. I've heard they are out there.

Great update! Those are some awesome character meet and greets the kids got!

Madison was really funny with the steak situation! Sounds like something my daughter would do!
Thanks. She'll even eat steak at home now because it reminds her of Ohana!

Your afternoon in Epcot sounds great! I've had the sushi at the CSin Japan(what ever it is called) and didn't really like it. BUT we ate at Teppan Edo for the first time in March and it was top notch! We had the Grilled Crispy Sukiyaki Beef Roll... it was like a philly steak sushi roll. {insert the drooling Homer pic here}
Is Teppan Edo the place where they cook your food in front of you? I'll be the kids would love that.
I never knew about that path... you guys saw sooooooo many characters- and so many 'secret' characters too. I will be looking for them the next time we go- when ever that is. :confused3
We're going down in June. Just take some time off and come on down. You're not busy then, are you?:rotfl2:
I love the baby picture of Madison- what a QT.
Thanks!
I swear, 'Ohana needs to supply hand trucks to wheel people out of the restaurant after eating.
::yes:: I like the way you think! They could even put Mickey Ears on them!
:thumbsup2 Wow, awesome score on the character meets there.
Yes, yes it was.
Well there you go... now everyone else you meet will be a disappointment by comparison. Congratulations on finally meeting Max though.:lmao:
Never! They're all and adventure!
Darkwing Duck :confused3
Oooo, he'd certainly be a challenge. But I can't imagine he's out much since he hasn't been on TV in what, 15 years?
Well, Evan's awesome, so I guess since he's willing to dress like you, we'll let you have this one.:cool2:
Every once in a while my family decides to humor me. :thumbsup2

That picture really is cool despite the blur from the lights. I'm sure it is a breathtaking sight in person.
Thank you. It was quite a view, that's for sure.

I'm pretty sure there is an unspoken no photography rule in men's rooms. If men's room pictures start getting out ladies will be jealous of our opulent bathroom situation.
Yeah, opulent. Rows of urinals stretching as far as the eye can see. Let the jealousy begin!
Wow this is really awesome. (Your mad multicoloral posting skillz and the secret meet and greet.)
Busy day at work yesterday. :thumbsup2
Madison is a very smart young lady.
We taught her well.
Did you convince the Ohana people to let you walk out with 6 skewers of meat?
Excuse me sir, I couldn't help but notice you're walking a little strange. Do you have 6 skewers of meat in your pants by any chance?

These pics are great. I really like the orange glo. Makes it seem so warm.
It was a pretty special evening, that's for sure.

Kinda of reminds me of the Emerald City in the wizard of Oz.
Do you think Walt can give me a brain?:confused3

:lmao: oh yaaa, with my shaved head, i probley could get a nice paint job!:thumbsup2
Instead of a tiger, you could get a dragon stretching from ear to ear!

nice pics barry!!! i dont know how you made that walk??:lmao:
Well, it was more of a waddle.

I love your trip reports! Your kids always look so sweet and happy! :)
Thanks! They're both pretty happy kids, even when we're not at Disney World!
What you came across was actually a character training session (at least that is what I have been told). It doesn't happen every day, and in the many times we have been to Disney, we have only seen it twice. Great find on the characters!!
That would make sense! I guess that's it's much easier to train their characters in a semi-controlled area like that rather than just throwing them out into the parks. Thanks for the info!
The building used to be the Millennial Village. It had stations for countries not on featured in the World Showcase. There was one simulator ride in the Jerusalem area. It was open back in 2000.
More awesome information! Thanks!

Sounds like O'hana was a hit. I even have a route that takes me through one of the long houses when it is hot out so I can soak up 2 minutes of AC.
Our trip to the Poly was a bit winding in between buildings and up from own by the pool. It was our first time down around the Poly buildings - it looks like a really nice place. The way back was the direct route under the monorail - quicker, but the parking lot wasn't nearly as pretty as the rest of the resort!

Thanks and welcome! Madison sure is a special little girl. She's also very protective of her brother, with is very sweet!

Bolt and Max how cool! Never seen either of them :) I wanna meet Bolt :)
We met Bolt a few years ago when his movie first came out - he was in DHS at the Magic of Animation building. Max certainly was a surprise, though!

How cool you stumbled across the secret character lair! And that is definitely a random character assortment!
Character Lair! I love it!
Steak is always > than pork, except when it's pulled pork, then that's a bit more of a tough call. And now I'm hungry...
Pulled Pork is good, but still a notch or two under steak. At least the stuff that we've had around here. I hear it's a entirely different experience down south.

Awesome update there Barry.

Love the shirts. Why, because they are awesome.
Thanks! Just like Agent J in Men in Black - we make this look good!:cool1:
Madison is a smart girl, so long as she remembers the following:
STEAK > PORK (except bacon)
Mmmm...bacon wrapped steak.
As for Ohana's we are huge fans after what they did for Megan and her alergies at the time. It has now been promoted to 1st dinner status whenever we travel to WDW. (besides how can you refuse non-stop meat?)
I remember that from your TR. We've never been faced with having any dietairy restrictions, but it's great to know what lengths Disney will go to when you need them too!
As for the Holy Grail of Characters Quest, I say we nominate Perry the Platypus.
I like it! We'll see Phineas and Ferb in June, and you can certainly bet that I'll be keeping an eye out for Agent P!

Pretty funny how my Nemisis just showed up. Clearly you can see what I'm up against.
He's certainly a sneaky one. He claims to be in Disney World right now, be ever once in a while a catch a quick movement out of the corner of my eye and I swear I saw him. By the time I turn to look, he's gone. :confused3
This last episode...you hit the Rare Character Jackpot. I think I found the Location on the map.
It's pretty easy to find on Google Maps and you can really see how big that building is. Amazing how Disney can hide something that large!

I would like to submit Ludwig VonDrake and/or Scrooge McDuck to your quest. I've heard they are out there.
Ludwig would be awesome, but we crossed Uncle Scrooge off in December of 2008
image058.jpg

OK where's that at?

Winter-Summerland?

Actually, that was in the Magic Kingdom, right behind the tea cups. The area was decked out as "Donald Duck and Company's Merry Christmas Tree Lot" to go with the Christmas Party theme. Donald and Scrooge switched off meeting people all day.
