Everything Michigan....

WOO HOOO! We cheered when we heard the news. I'm south of there, but work in the city (when I'm not pink slipped!) Flint needs more jobs and more families. The city really is dying.

I was cheering right with ya! I live in Burton, Flint's next door neighbor. The plant's right up the street from me and it's been so sad to drive by lately. The lot looks so empty. But we're headed for a re-birth, so to speak. We know how to build cars, we want to build cars and that announcement was just what we needed. A little pick-me-up.

Flint is definately a mess. Actually though I thought Saginaw was in worse shape until that list of worst places to live came out. Flint was #1! :scared1: We'll pick ourselves back up. Michiganders are resilient if nothing else!

I'm down 75 from you, just across the border in Oakland County. I always thought of Saginaw as worse, too, since I'm always scared out of my mind when I get turned around in that construction they had going on 10. Work (when they don't have 100 still on layoff) and hockey are both in Flint, so I am used to driving around the area and in the neighborhoods.

*realized I mentioned pink slipped and layoffs in two consecutive posts* Yes, it is getting to me. I HATE NOT WORKING!

Did y'all hear on the news about the new hybrid plant they're building in Flint? I guess groundbreaking starts in 2010. They should start now and be done by 2010 but whatev.

They're building a biofuel plant here too.

But we're headed for a re-birth, so to speak.

There is a lot in the works here right now. The U of M dorms opened up two months ago and are completely full. Which is going to attract a lot of new business to downtown. The old Durant hotel is under construction and will reopen next September as apartments. The downtown area is getting a face lift and it is BEAUTIFUL!!! And we've had a couple movies shot here recently. (A little one called Semi-Pro, maybe you've heard of it?:rotfl: )

Also, I've lived here my whole life and I never realized we have a dinner theatre. They just put on Chicago last month and they are having a "Vampire Ball" this month. And there are going to be a lot of great shows this season at The Whiting including Bill Cosby.

I'm soooooo glad to hear from others in the area that don't find in necessary to bash Flint.

The dorms opening are great for Flint! Did you read the Flint Journal article a couple of weeks back about the "taste of Flint" walk they had for the people living in the dorms? I thought it was a great idea. Get more people in Flint, get more people walking in Flint - make Flint safer!

I still spend the gas just to go to the farmer's market once a week. Great produce and atmosphere! I wish I could combine it with my normal trips (hockey games and practices) to the area, but the times NEVER match up.

I live in Burton so I'm right next door. The U of M dorms was such a great idea. I can't believe they'd gone so long without them. I remember as a kid going downtown and how much I loved the cobblestone(?) streets. I still love them actually! I'm actually right down the road from Top Hat. They really spruced the place up for the movie. Looks great.

I didn't know about the dinner theater either. Cool! :thumbsup2 I was really bummed when I missed Jeff Corwin at the Whiting. I'm more looking forward to the Wizard of Oz at Whiting next year. I think they should have more advertising for the planetarium. I've always loved the Christmas show they have. My grandpa lives on Missouri Ave. so that area will always be special to me.

Did you hear about US 23 possibly closing? I hope and pray it's not true. There's not many drive-in's left!

That's cool! Where do you perform?

I lived in Chesterfield 24/Gratiot area up until last May, we are about 20 minutes away from there now.

I'm at 23 and Gratiot (in the sub behind KMart/Art Van). Where abouts are you now?

I mostly do Service Clubs (Elks, Eagles, etc), and during the spring I do the All Night Senior Parties for High Schools. I am also introducing Home Weight Loss Parties here in Michigan. (Like Tupperware parties, but with hypnosis and it helps you lose weight!)

Kris :)

I LOVE the Farmer's Market. The produce is sooooo much better than anything you can get at the grocery store and it's cheaper too.

Nooooooooooooo!!!!

It's unfortunate. I think more people would go to drive ins if they didn't start so late. They should repeal daylight savings time, it's outlived it's purpose anyway.

I'd like to see them fix and reopen the capital theatre for the students too. Have you gotten to go to Sonic yet? We were going to go on Tuesday, at least to see how crazy the line up was, but we never made it.

I don't think they're going to this or next summer. But the guy that owns it is getting up there in years. I wish I had enough money to do something like that. I always loved the drive-in. I thought that Bush was gonna eliminate Daylight Savings. Guess he forgot or something.

They should definately revitalize Flint. Get people to start coming back here. We've got alot of fun things to do. Nope. Just went back on Miller Rd. last night and I'm glad to see construction's done. I've been DYING to go to Sonic! DBF thinks their food sucks, nevermind he's never been there! Poor poor cluess man. :confused3 I am making a plan to go though. I'm gonna try to do it before the snow falls cause I don't know if they'll bring my food out in freezing temps and that's part of the draw, I think. Silly fun but fun just the same.

Have you been to Red Robin yet? Mmmmm. delicious! And ya can't beat the never-ending fries!

We saw Bill Cosby about 4 yrs ago at Soaring Eagle casino. He was great :) couldn't believe how long his show lasted.

Colleen,
Did you say Baldwin?? Go there all the time......buddy of mine has a cabin there.....In fact will be going there Nov. 1-4. His cabin is west of town.....
We turn left at Big Star Grocery (south end of Baldwin), go about 5 miles.
Nice little cabin on Oxbo Lake. I love it there.......We have looked in to buying a lot by him several times.....but we end up spending our money on our Disney trips!!!!!

We kayak the Piere Marquette all the time.....Have you ever been in Baldwin for the Troutorama festival?? We go to that every year......I think this year was our 18th !!!!

Also, DW and I do Grand Traverse resort usually every Feb. for a weekend retreat......DW gets rooms half off through her employer...We love it there too...

Our place is about 5 miles east of town, just off of M10. We keep saying we're going to build a cabin up there someday, but we always end up spending the money elsewhere (Disney ;) ) and putting the cabin off. I suspect "someday" won't come until we're empty nesters and feeling to old and creaky for roughing it in a tent. :rotfl:

We've never been up there for the festival. We tend to just head up for a couple days here and there when DH has a break between jobs, just to hang out and unwind with the kids. No internet, no TV, and no cell phone reception is a nice break from reality!

DH & I love Grand Traverse for our anniversary, because it is in the September "shoulder" season when rooms and greens fees are a bit cheaper but before the weather gets too cold to want to be up north. And it is so beautiful up there that time of year, when the trees are just starting to turn.

I haven't tried ZooBoo yet. I'll have to see if there are tickets left and go to that with the kids.

We went to Greenfield Village's Hallowe'en Nights last weekend. I was really disappointed as it was wayyyy too crowded. I think they over-sold it, it was wall to wall people and it wasn't even possible to stop to look at the Halloween set-ups because it was so crowded we had to keep the line moving. I felt like cattle walking through there. They've gotten pretty chincy too with what they give out and there were only 7 stops in the whole village. The last time I went was 4 years ago it wasn't as crowded and there were more stops and nicer stuff too.
[/gripe]

We had the same experience with the Christmas nights at Greenfield Village. It was nice a few years ago when we took DS's cub scout den, but when we went back ast year it was just *packed*. I'm not a fan of crowds, so I doubt we'll go back this year.

The ZooBoo is always fun, though. We live way NE of Detroit and DH's best friend lives out 696 in the NW suburbs, so the zoo is a good halfway point and we've been meeting there for the Halloween and Christmas events for years now. The kids do their thing, and we just stroll along behind them and catch up.

Sonic? You have a Sonic up there? There's only one that I know of in the Detroit area, and it is so far on the wrong side of town for us that Flint is probably closer.

Are you talking about the drive in that is east of Flint off of 69? We keep meaning to get up there for a movie when we are in the area, but never end up sticking around late enough.

Does anyone who lives up there remember Pennywhistle Place? It used to be near Crossroads Village when I was a kid, and I was so disappointed to learn it closed. I remember that place being really cool (right up there with Disney's River Country waterpark in places that stick out in my otherwise vague childhood memories), and it is such a shame that it isn't there for me to take my kids to.

Awww. can I join? My DH is from Flint. I am a Buckeye..but we lived in Grand Rapids for 8 years. Sure miss Michigan.
We were in the U.P. this past June. We just love it. The farther north we go, the more the blood pressure goes down!!

Dh's folks are still in Flint, he has a sister in Clio, family friends in Cadillac.
He also has an uncle in Grosse Ile, cousins in Traverse City.

I am telling you, if we could find decent jobs back in MI, we would be there in a heartbeat.

Lisa
