Everything Michigan....

A co-worker of mine mentioned Turkeyville today. Apparently they have a family friendly haunted house and other activities. Any thoughts on the place?

As we are new to Michigan we'll be driving (instead of making a cross country flight) down next month. Any advice on routes to take? How long does it typically take you? Our current plan is to leave on a Friday around noon and drive to Chatanooga, then finish the drive the next day.

RangerPooh,
We have drove several times to WDW from Battle Creek. We belong to AAA and always get a triptik from them.......They route us I69 to Indianapolis take I65 to Nashville, take 24 from Nashville to Chattanooga to 75, take 75 all the way to the Florida Turnpike, Fla. Tpk to I-4 to WDW!!! Plan on 20 hours driving time......I have done it in 19....and taken 23 hours, kids were young then so we stopped alot;)

We usually leave early in the am, and spend the night just south of Atlanta....then about 6 hours from there....

I would think you would get in to Orlando between 4-6 on Sat.

We havent drove it in prob. 8 years.....DW and I just flew down in Sept. from Detroit Metro for $125pp R/T (nonstop flights). We rented a car for 7 days for $89 with Alamo........I couldnt justify driving. With gas prices, meals, hotel, I couldnt drive 1 way for what I spent on airfare, rental car and parking at the airport.

I dont know about the haunted house at Turkeyville.....never heard of them doing that....I know the zoo boo (Binderpark) is great for small kids....very kid friendly.....

OMG I can't believe I found this thread! I was just browsing and saw Michigan and it caught my eye!

I'm 25 and I live in the Chesterfield/Macomb area.

I have lived here all my life (but everyday Florida looks better to me).

I'm a hypnotist (stage/clean vegas style show and I help people with problems too).

I LOVE Disney (my first word was Micka Mouse), and I'm cruising with my family in July 2010!

This is one thread I will definitely be looking at every day...

Kris :-)

Straight down I-75 all the way. Took DH and I about 18-19 hours.

Seriously? That's cool.

Oh, and GO BLUE!!!!

Thanks for the travel suggestions. As we have little ones we'll be stopping alot, so 20-23 hours sounds very reasonable to me. If we would have found such cheap airfair and car rental we might have gone that route. Then again I'm not sure if I coul dconvince DH to do it as our last flight to WDW hit severe tubulance that resulted in our airplane takinga slight nosedive :scared: Needless to say we've become a bit shy of flying.

As for ZooBoo, we're planning on going there this weekend :goodvibes

That's cool! Where do you perform?

I lived in Chesterfield 24/Gratiot area up until last May, we are about 20 minutes away from there now.

I haven't tried ZooBoo yet. I'll have to see if there are tickets left and go to that with the kids.

We went to Greenfield Village's Hallowe'en Nights last weekend. I was really disappointed as it was wayyyy too crowded. I think they over-sold it, it was wall to wall people and it wasn't even possible to stop to look at the Halloween set-ups because it was so crowded we had to keep the line moving. I felt like cattle walking through there. They've gotten pretty chincy too with what they give out and there were only 7 stops in the whole village. The last time I went was 4 years ago it wasn't as crowded and there were more stops and nicer stuff too.
[/gripe]

Morning fellow Michiganders!

How about the CMU/WMU game this weekend. We will be in Mt. Pleasant on Sat. for the game. Anyone else?

Hasn't this just been the most gorgeous fall? Last weekend was awesome. We spent most of the weekend outside cleaning up, planting some mums, decorating the outside with cornstalks and hay. Now yesterday was done right miserable especially since DD had a XC meet and DS had a football game. Hoping it dries up a ton for DS's XC meet today.

Anyone on here from Midland, Flushing or work for Dow Automotive? Trying to find some info on lost friends.

We're still new to the area. What's Greenfield Village and where is it? Also how's the trick or treating where you live? We've heard that ours is ok, but as the sidewalk is on the other side of the street I'm not sure if we'll have as many :confused3 Where we use to live few people trick or trested through the neighborhoods as it was always too cold or rainy. Instead they would hit the mall. It was a far cry from the Halloweens DH and I experienced as kids in California.

Greenfield Village is a living museum (for the lack of a better term). It is a village of homes, shops, schoolhouse and such that you can visit to see what is was like long ago. I believe Thomas Eddison's house is there. Haven't been there in 20+ years so I am going on memory. I was in 4th and 5th grades during the bicentenial (1976) and that's where we went for field trips. We even spent a day dressed in prairie dresses going to school at the schoolhouse. There is also the Henry Ford Museum close by. I think it is all owned by the same entity. HFM is all inside and used to have this massive train in it. Others who have been there more recently can tell you more about it. They are in Dearborn about 2 hours east of I-94 from you.

As far as Halloween, ask your neighbors. We are in a sub, in the middle of the country. We probably have 100 kids in the neigborhood, but people bring their kids from all over. so we get about 300 pieces of candy. Many churches around here now do Trunk or Treat in their parking lots so not so many kids the past few years.

Greenfield Village is the "old" name for the living history site now known as "The Henry Ford" (http://www.thehenryford.org/). It's in Dearborn, Michigan, and is associated with the Henry Ford Museum (which is also pretty cool). Greenfield Village is a very large open air attraction consisting of about 100 historical homes that have either been recreated on site or brought intact from their original locations. Among the more famous sites are Thomas Edison's Menlo Park laboratory and the Logan County Courthouse (where not-yet-President Lincoln used to practice). There are presenters dressed in costume who explain the historical significance of a number of the sites. There are two 'working' farms on site, where the presenters grow crops, milk cows, cook meals, do laundry and can pretty much be seen every day doing exactly what people from their representative time periods (1890 and 1760) did. They do special events during Halloween and the Holidays, which was what the other poster was referring to. It can get pretty crowded at those special ticket events...although how the Village, being several miles from end to end could ever really get crowded, I don't know.

If you have kids, it's super cool and educational. As I mentioned, the museum is also worth a look, but don't try to do both in one day....that would be difficult. There's also an IMAX onsite and the Automobile Hall of Fame is just next door.

I used to work at Greenfield Village as a historical presenter, and I got married at the chapel there, so it holds a special place in my heart.

If you ever get a chance to go to GFV, I would highly recommend it. :thumbsup2 Since you've never been, don't try to do the museum and the village all in one day though, that would be too overwheming.

A few years ago some friends of ours were visiting from England. He was telling us how on a previous trip to the U.S. they went to GFV. When his DD went back to school the teacher asked about her vacation to America and said "Oh, so you went to Disneyworld" assuming that was where they went because I guess when you're in England and say you are vacationing in the U.S. they just assume WDW. Anyway, the DD said "No we went to Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum" The teacher was suddenly very impressed and said "Great, you got to see the REAL America." The teacher then went on for a long time about GFV telling the children that if they ever go to the U.S. to be sure to go to GFV because it was such a good tool in learning American History.

Trick or Treating is good in our neighborhood. There are lots of kids and the houses are close together - is just like when I went TorT in the 1970's, not much has changed.

Did y'all hear on the news about the new hybrid plant they're building in Flint? I guess groundbreaking starts in 2010. They should start now and be done by 2010 but whatev.

I'm probably the closest person on this thread to that area since we have our home ice hockey in Flushing. If they have kids in hockey I can probably help you, if not, sorry!

We're in the village and everyone gets shipped in. 400+ if it isn't snowing! Since Halloween is on a Friday I expect even higher numbers.

GFV has Edison's home, and his lab. I was just there this summer and it has changed so much just in the last ten years! The museum has also changed a lot. All for the better! (and it was great before!)

We ended up hanging around a group from Australia when we were at GFV this summer! They were there for the car cruise, and were totally enamored with the entire Motor City! It was cool to see people from another country so into cars!

WOO HOOO! We cheered when we heard the news. I'm south of there, but work in the city (when I'm not pink slipped!) Flint needs more jobs and more families. The city really is dying.
