BF and I decided to go on vacation to Spain for New Years Eve for a few days. It was a gift to eachother for our 21st bdays.

But there turned out to be a lot of 'hidden costs' that we didn't know about.
So we paid well over our budget for it, it's two days that we have to take off work unpaid and the weather isn't even going to be good! If I'm honest we didn't really think it through, we were too anxious to just get it booked.

We both LOVE vacations, but to be honest we're not really too excited about this one.

Ever had a vacation that you weren't looking forward to...and what was the outcome?

We just went on a 7 day cruise with my husband's parents, his son, DIL and two grandchildren. Other than the DIL it worked out okay. My DH enjoyed it more than I did, put I had a good time.

If you can't cancel and the money has already been spent, try to make the most of it. Stop thinking about the cost and just think of all the fun you could have.

Many years ago my first husband and I saved all year to take the kids on vacation. Everytime we bought something, at most meals, he would say "Do you know how long we saved to pay for that?" It just took all the fun out of it. What's the point in going if all you are going to worry about is the cost? All you really need is an "AA" (attitude adjustment), you've got six weeks to work on it. :goodvibes

I have. But once I got there, I was SOOOO happy we went. I'm sure you'll feel that way, too! Especially if you love to travel.

No, I can't say I've every NOT looked forward to a vacation.

It almost sounds like an oxymoron.

not really - anyplace where somebody else is cooking the meals, doing the dishes, and cleaning up the bathroom is A-OK IN MY BOOK!

Vactiony stuff after all that is just an added bonus :)

jeez!!! I hope things improve for you. First the birthday issue and now this. Life sucks sometime eh?

No - never happened to me - but, here's a suggestion: go ahead and try to have a good time. It will be money wasted if you plan on being miserable.

Yes - about 2 years ago. DH wanted to go visit his best friend in L.A. (actually Redondo Beach). I really didnt want to go but DH really did. We used our FF miles so the trip was pretty cheap. The one thing I really wanted to do the guys had no interest in - Disneyland. We stayed at friends apartment - he had no T.V. for the first few days. And the friend would go spend each night at his girlfriends. So we were left all alone with no t.v. and no transportation. Then one day we spent with friend picking out a t.v. and other housewares. Fun. At least after that when he left us alone we could watch t.v. We did go to Hollywood and see the Chinese theater and the stars on the sidewalk. And we spent a day going to see the Price is Right (DH's lifelong dream - but not worth it to me to spend a whole day waiting in line). I didnt look forward to the trip (hated to spend the FF miles and the vacation time for something I wasnt interested in) and I was right - it wasnt much fun. Oh well - now that we have a child I dont have to worry about going out there again.

Oh, yes!!!!!

The in-laws have a lake house up north and quite a few times, "vacation" has been visiting them. Besides not liking the in-laws, the house has one bathroom, no A/C, no dishwasher. They complain if they have to do any extra work so we all have to make these big meals and do the dishes by hand. I do more housework there than I do at my own house. They don't like the kids to be in the house during the day so they lock them out. I could go on and on. It always makes me so happy to be back at work!!!!!

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I'm not dreading it! I'm just so used to be being totally over-excited about vacation that it feels strange to not feel like that for once.

I'm sure it will be lovely when we get there, it's just an odd feeling to not be 'bouncing off the walls' about it, if you see what I mean??? :listen:

Yeah, I can totally understand. I'm usually counting the days, planning like crazy. But I must confess, I just went to Disneyland last week and I wasn't excited about it beforehand!! DH husband said "Leave it to you to be unhappy on the happiest place on earth!" :rotfl2:
But once we were there, I was overwhelmed with excitement!

Where are you going to be staying in Spain? I´ve travelled quite a bit in Spain and would love to give you some tips if there´s anything I can do to make your holiday work out nicely.

Lloret de mar, in Costa Brava. Do you know it? I've been to Costa del sol a billion times and went to Salou last year, but this is a new one for me.
I study Spanish so I'm hoping it won't be too touristy so I can make some use of my Spanish!

I´m afraid I haven´t been there myself, but I know quite a few people who have been there. Have only heard positive reviews, although I do believe it is quite touristy. Hope you have a wonderful trip, things usually end up being great in the end.

Thank you! I think BF and I are just not used to going anywhere by WDW! which is obviously exciting! Our only vacation before that was also to spain, but our first ever trip together and his first trip anywhere ever! so that was exciting for different reasons.

This one just doesn't seem as exciting. I keep trying to look it up online and finding nothing terribly exciting! I'm sure it will be great when we get there. BF and I are long-distance from one another at the moment so any time together is great.

But time together in WDW would be better!!!!! :goodvibes

Every few years my husbands family will decide to plan a reunion somewhere between Virginia and Misssissippi(usually end up in Dollywood :sad2: It never fails that its usually the same year we plan to also do Disney. So we end up blowing a thousand or two that we could use for Florida. Thats all I can think about the whole time we are at the reunion. Of course, next year,( a Disney year) they have already started planning one. And yours truly will look like a you-know-what if I dare suggest we bow out.

I have a confession to make...I've just advertised my trip for sale on my university web-page.

I feel bad as I haven't told BF. I'm just curious to see if anyone will take it as I know we could do better things with our money.

ooooh, I feel guilty now! I'm not sure I'd really sell it but atm I just want to know if theoretically we COULD get rid of it and earn our money back....
(I know the airline will allow you to change the name on the ticket)

No biggie either way really, I'm mostly just curious if anyone would take it, so maybe BF and I could rebook somewhere else that we'd researched a bit better. But still, a break is a break, no complaints either way!

Sometimes I want to go and sometimes I don't :)
