OK, when I first called I was told that certainly the parents would be on premises. Second phone call, just the mother would be there. Third time I called (because I wanted more info on the age and health of the mother) he told me that he could not guarantee that she would be there at all and that his vet told him it is not good for the mother to be there when the puppies are taken away. Then he told me that he had plenty of other people coming to see the puppies who didn't care if the mother was there or not. Needless to say, I am very uncomfortable with this situation so I will not be going to meet this puppy. :( I'm disappointed but at the same time I am very relieved to have come to this decision because I was getting really uncomfortable about it. My "gut feeling" was that it wasn't right. So I'm going with my gut.

Kilee, is that a shi tzu in your siggie?

Always go with your gut.
Greenfield Puppies seems to be basically a 'clearing house' for puppies. They aren't breeding them. More like a finder of puppies. If you are looking for a legitimate breeder, go to that particular breed's rescue group, in the area you live in. They can give you the names of reputable breeders.
If you are going to pay close to $1000 for a puppy, you want to be dealing with a reputable breeder.
And don't get me started on the 'hybrid' breeds...just another name for mixed breeds. And yes, I understand that there are many acknowledged breeds today that started out as 'mixed breeds', but it isn't the same. Many of those 'hybrids' out there have serious health issues. I know people with these dogs and they have huge vet bills.

Hi Everyone,

Last year on July 31, I picked up my Shorkie puppy, a girl named Vienna. I saw her advertised on Greenfield puppies and called and was able to make a appointment with the couple who was selling her. When we got there it was a small farm, very clean, all the puppies were well fed and looked very healthy, playful and groomed very well. My puppy did come with a warranty and she had health paperwork and shots from a Vet where several Vets worked there. They were very helpful and answered all my questions. I took Vienna to my Vet and he said she was a very healthy puppy with no problems. She eats well for me, very good tempered and my children just love her. I had a very good experience with Greenfield puppies, Benuel Lapp sold me the dog and I would buy another one from him. He gave me a big bag of her puppy food she was eating and told me to make sure to get her a good food not cheap grocery store food. He really seemed to care about his puppies. Kept them very nice. My Vienna is my baby and I enjoy her very much and so does the children. :)

Hi Benuel, oops, "Leslie",

Thanks for responding to this post. I know it's important to use the Google on yourself often to see if there are any negative reviews about your, I mean Greenfield's company. Sure, this is a post from 2006, but sometimes the Google is a little slow on the webcrawl.

I'm sure "Vienna" is a wonderful breeding machine, I mean family pet! It was very kind of you, I mean Benuel, wait, I mean you! to recommend non-cheap dog food. To me, this is a clear indication that you, I mean Benuel, I mean, wait AUUGGHH you! run a wonderful puppy mill WAIT, sorry, take that back, small breeding collaborative.

"Eating well" is a sure sign of a QUALITY dog!

I didn't even want a dog before I read your post. I shall be making a roadtrip this weekend to pick up a wonderful ****zpoo from you, I mean... I don't even know who I mean anymore.

LOL - and now that everyone knows that Greenfield's is indeed a supporter of the puppy mill industry, hopefully those reading this thread will instead seek out a rescue group, instead of supporting animal cruelty.

My sister had the same experience while finding her Shorkie through Greenfield puppies. She thoroughly researched both Greenfield puppies and spoke numerous times with the Amish farmer who bred the puppy. Believe me, if she had any doubts about the puppy or the breeder, she would never have purchased him. Palmer is an adorable puppy and had never had any major health issues in the two years that my sister and family have had him.
It was a very positive experience.

ETA: I am not sure if the post that I quoted is legitimate or not, but the experience that I posted about is 100% true. My sister would have left that farm in a heartbeat if she sensed that something wasn't right.

All you have to do is read the About Us section on their website to know that it is a situation to avoid.

This thread is from 2006

One would assume a moderator would think to look at dates...sorry.
But, my opinion stands...walk away. It may not be a puppy mill per se, but reputable breeders don't use puppy brokers to find people to buy their puppies. They usually have a waiting list for the pups before they are even born. Just sayin'.

What reputable breeder needs to use a middleman? It just makes no sense.

Visit a local shelter and adopt a dog . . . it's a much better way than using a pet store or a big middleman like Greenfield. By the way, it's the Hostettler family, not Lapp and from their photo on their website, they ain't Amish.

We did not get our pugs from Greenfield, but we did get them from one the amish breeders in PA, or backyard breeders if that's what you wanna call them. I dont see what the big freaking deal is. There are plenty of people who pay thousands for pets from so called reputable breeders, only to find out a couple years later their pets developed problems just as any other.

This is about Greenfield puppies being a puppymill or is it puppy mill? How will that google? Maybe it should be Greenfield puppy mill, altogether.

Ugh. I hate those reputation defender companies popping up all over. Let real people talk about real issues without the spin.
