Ever have a meal that was surprisingly GOOD?

My inclination is to say the Yachtsmen Steakhouse at the YC, too. But really, that's perhaps the best meal I've had at Disney, but I expected it to be good.

So I'll probably get shot for this, but the meal that most surprised me was some lousy piece of grub I got at Pleasure Island at 1 AM. I was tired, hungry, the wife was yelling that my designated driver was leaving in two minutes with or without me, and I didn't want to eat vending food at the hotel. I grabbed some greasy looking sausage sandwich from a cart and man, that was the best sausage sandwich I'd ever eaten. Maybe not cuisine haute, but decidedly the most surprising meal I've ever had on Walt Disney property.

Teh all you can eat lunch at nine dragons was surprisingly wonderful!

We had a wonderful "surprise" meal at a rest. that is no longer there. We were staying at Port Orleans (now FQ) and got back from the parks fairly late and ate at the rest. there, Bonfamilles. Great food, great server! Was extra nice to my DD who had turned 6 that day. Food was outstanding! A very relaxing way to end a great day. Sorry that it is no longer there.

We usually plan our meals very carefully based on the restaurant's reviews-- we give a lot of credence to the reviews in the Unofficial Guide, with the Passporter also taken into consideration. This strategy has worked for us, we usually have good meals, and the few times I have ignored the advice of reviewers (going to Chef Mickey's despite bad reviews) I was reminded to listen to the reviews!

However. For our very first meal ever at WDW: We checked into the BWV after a long morning of traveling, and my mental itinerary called for lunch at Beaches and Cream, but we were so, so tired and B/C was just too darn far to walk. So against all advice, we put ourselves at the mercy of the oft-maligned Big River Grille. We were very happy! We weren't too ambitious-- just burgers and fries-- but they were very good burgers at decent prices. I would eat there again.

Erikarate that is exactly what we had the Plaza Restaurant and loved it. Want to bring my dad there next time as he really enjoys a good German potato salad.

Last year we went to CRT for dinner although the reviews were mediocre and it was described as overpriced. I was thrilled!!

It was the perfect spot. We were there during Easter week (last years Easter week was much more crowded then this years). The respite in a low key not so overcrowded space was so welcome.

We had the prime rib (this year also) and it is tender. Each course was on target.

The whole experience exceeded our expectations:D .

Sci-fi is another example. The reviews were mediocre so we were not expecting much. We had a ball!! The girls laughed themselves silly at the old cartoons and the burgers were the best we've ever had anywhere.

I actively avoid buffets at home. Hate em.

But...

Did several a WDW, due to my DD being 2, and free, along with characters. Suprizingly good.

However, I don't see us doing as many this trip. I still like to be waited on.

I have to add Donald's Breakfastasourus to the suprisingly good meals that I have had at WDW. It was the first breakfast buffet that I have gone to at WDW and it was an egg lovers paradise. I was really blown away by it (as was the rest of my family) and will make it a definate stop on future trips.

We went to Tony's for the first time in October and I had the best bruschetta and chicken parm-it melted in my mouth--it was fabulous. I live in NJ- land of Italian cooking and I've never had better chicken parm.
In December I tried Wolfgang Puck Express, which we had always avoided...got the BBQ chicken quesidilla, and I still think about it and crave it 5 months later.
Olivia's was a wonderful surprise, great onion rings, delicious buttermilk chicken.
Flame Tree BBQ was another surprise--it was very, very tasty. I normally hate baked beans, for some reason I tried the ones that came with my meal and they were excellent.

I agree about GF Cafe - breakfast (pecan pancakes!) and lunch (burger or any of the sandwiches) are terrific!

Another favorite is Marrakesh in EPCOT - wonderful atmosphere, excellent and friendly service , and fabulous food!

Although I haven't yet had the chance to try it, I have it on good authority that Olivia's at OKW is an unexpected pleasure.

On my first visit to DAK, Flame Tree BBQ blew us away. This last time left something to be desired.

For the west coast crowd, I can't recommend White Water Rapids Cafe at the Grand Californian enough. Food cooked to order and just a hop skip and a jump away from higher priced eateries inside DCA.
