Ever Hated Your Room and Switched???

We had a room at OKW last year that was not up to snuff, but we did not move. Everything about it just looked like it was way past its prime! Every other time we have stayed at OKW or any of the other DVC properties our room has looked rather fresh, but not that room! Even my husband noticed, and he doesn't really pay attention! Later that week we moved to a 2 bedroom as more family was joining us, and that room was perfect! I know they were doing renovations while we were there, and I sure hope they made it over to that room! I was planning on asking if the connecting studio was available for our 2 bedroom reservation, so we would not have to move. But, there was no way I wanted to stay there any longer than I had to! This has been the only room I have been disappointed in in 12 stays, so I think it was a fluke. Sure, I have not gotten the view I wanted some of the time, but that is ok; however, I do expect the room to look rather new-not perfect but nice. This particular room just did not even come close!

We were assigned a handicapped GV at OKW last November. I have to admit that I was apprehensive about the lay-out (shower stall and lower countertops). As it turned out the countertops were just the same height as "normal" ones (there's a cut-out area under the sink that wheelchairs could go under) and only the master bath's shower was different than what is in the other rooms. We just took showers in the 3 other bathrooms!

I guess it was sort of a blessing in disguise that we did have this unit--my husband threw his back out on our second to the last day at WDW. He ended up using the master bath shower and was relieved that it was easily accesible!!

A few years ago we checked into a room at OKW that had a musty/mildewy smell. When we called housekeeping, they offered a room spray (not with our breathing issues :) ) &/or to wash the carpet the next day (the smell was not the carpet). They sent an engineering CM. As soon as he walked it, he smelled it. He suggested I call the front desk manager. I did. She was wonderful about getting us another room (& keeping us near our friends who were checking in the next day). The CM & my husband soon realized the smell was due to some mildew near the jacuzzi. Our new room smelled like we expect at OKW!!

Funny you should ask. We just got back from 9 days at WLV. We spent the first night at the Contemporary to save points, so didn't unpack our suitcases. I had also stowed about 9 boxes of groceries/inflatable bed/misc. stuff the night before we checked in at WLV. We were totally spoiled on our first trip 2 years ago in room 4517, right next to the elevator with a lovely pool and bay view. So I requested pool view, upper floor, near the elevator, hoping against hope that we would end up on the same general area. We ended up on the 5th floor, woods view, but near the elevator. I really tried to go into it with a "everyone can't have the great room" philosophy, but it just wasn't the same. We called & found out a pool view would be available the next day, and agonized all night long over whether to do it. So conflicted over the need to unpack our stuff and settle in and the feeling of not really being there without being able to see the bay, the hotel across the way, and the pool activity. Also, I will never do a 5th floor room because of the balcony being all enclosed and not being able to see out when sitting in the chairs (I did so enjoy my morning coffee and evening wine looking at the boats zipping back and forth). Anyhow, we decided to move the next day and we were ecstatic that we were put into room 4517 where we were the last time.

It was a major inconvenience to live out of our suitcases and not unpack our boxes, but it was so worth it. I was glad to pay the $30 fee to have the view and especially the same room as last time. While it's true that not everyone can get a great room, I don't see anything wrong with requesting a change if you're willing to pay the fee and the inconvenience of having to move stuff. I would do it again in a minute; probably not for a short stay, but for 9 days, it was worth it.

Thanks for all of the great responses! Yikes! Throwing you back out on a trip to WDW is a nightmare!

Im not "sucking it up" on my vacation! I suck it up everyday so that I can go and enjoy my family on vacation.

It's what is important to you. Some people won't cook, some people won't commando and some people just want to relax and enjoy the Resort, their home, and it's amenities.

At the point of check-in, we have invested so much money, time and effort to reach that front desk, that I am not going to allow a cleaning fee to stand in the way of enjoying our vacation to the fullest.

Yes, I believe in reason, but "because it's my turn", won't be one of them.

I didnt request a HA room and I won't accept one. I requested Non Smoking and I expect to receive non smoking. These 2 should not be negotiable and should be guaranteed. If solo, I may stay in a HA room but even then they should notify you. It's not like they change!

If they can guarantee Boardwalk View, why can't they guarantee Non Smoking?

Yes, we've had a room I HATED. However, we kept it because we aren't any 'better' or more deserving than other members. We figure we own part of the resort as a whole and this was our turn to stay in this location. We've had our turn and won't stay in that area again.

I am sorry, but I don't think that at the prices paid and for the maintenance fees we are charged, that any of us should be subjected to "bad rooms". I am sure that DVC and the front desk are aware of all of the "offending" rooms, and should make it a point of not placing members in them. In fact, they should never even create a resort with "offending" rooms, i.e., dumpster views, air conditioner vent view etc. This should all be planned out better during the construction stages. These rooms should be turned into storage right from the get go, as I am sure that the grief created each and everytime they try to place someone in those rooms is really not worth it to both the family and the cast member. Don't forget, we are "owners", right along with Disney.
