We're booked in a 9B Oceanview GTY for our Alaska cruise. There is only 1 9B showing availability & only a few 9As, so I'm wishing on a star for an upgrade to a 7A verandah, which costs about the same as a 9A. I know I might recieve just the 9B, but I still have hope that with such limited oceanview availability, I'll get something better.

Has anyone here gotten a really nice upgrade on DCL? Not just via GTY, but in any circumstance?

Yes. From a lower category verandah to a higher one.

We were in Concierge a few years ago, asked about upgrades, and ended up in 12000. Right between the two royal suites. It was pretty cool! Lots of extra storage room in the extra hallway! Of course, the people in front of us were upgraded to one of the Royal Suites from that room... ;)

"Upgrade"? or "Upsell"?

Upgrade means you got a better category room than you paid for for free (and no asking for it).

Upsell means you got a better category room for an extra cost. Usually requested on embarkation day.

Thanks for the clarification! For us, it was upgrade as we were already in concierge...

Once, on our second cruise wayyyy back in 2002. We booked a 5B(I'm not even sure it was the same categories back then) for the 4 of us and I called for some reason or another and the man on the phone said "I'm going to put you guys in a 4A". It had the extra murphy bed so we were able to pay and bring my daughters boyfriend with us.

Years ago, we booked connecting insides for our DS’s Family, 5 people. When we checked in, they had connecting outside cabins! We were still inside, but I was so happy for them!

We were sailing in a 1BR concierge on the WBPC trip. Our original room (same kind) was not useable. So we went into the larger 1BR on the Wonder. Then our AC kept leaking and they moved us to the 2BR. It was amazing. We had that for a whole week. My son who was 15 at the time had his own bed and got to eat Palo in our room. It was a great trip.

Booked an Ocean View on the Magic. Disney called our Travel Agent and said we had been upgraded to a Verandah. That was in 2003. The upgrade came about 10 days before our cruise, and after we had our luggage tags.

Two of our first three cruises got upgraded! Our first cruise in 2010 there used to be a guaranteed category that was basically to guarantee you would get a room somewhere on the ship. We chose this because it was only $999 per person for the first two adults and we were just excited to go on a 10 day cruise in the Med! We were upgraded to a 9C exterior room! I fell in love with the huge porthole window and deck 2. Our third cruise was on the Fantasy when she was only a couple of weeks old. We booked an 8C and got upgraded to a 5a! Our one and only veranda cruise! No upgrades since 2012, but we have always enjoyed whatever stateroom we have had on our Disney cruises. :)

$999 per person for a 10 day Med cruise? Wow!

Cat. 12 GTY. DCL used to offer those when an itinerary wasn't selling well. We took advantage of one for the 2007 14 night WBTA. It was $999 pp for a Cat. 12 GTY and we were upgraded to a Cat. 9 large porthole room on deck 2. It was an amazing deal for 14 nights.

Last time we did GTY was in 2013 and we got a reg verandah room instead of a navigators verandah... this year we're doing GTY again and I requested a 5E....we'll see, I'm crossing my fingers for a 4A room but trying not to get my hopes up... we had 4A and switched it to a 5E GTY and save about $750

For our December 2017 cruise, we booked a GTY for the navigator's verandah category (which I believe is 7A). When our room was assigned, it turns out we had been upgraded to 5C! We would have been fine either way, and ended up really loving our stateroom and location.

We were upgraded from a 5A to a 4A on our Med cruise in 2010 on the Magic. I suspect it was because the ship wasn't very full and they were rebalancing areas for staffing and ability to sell less expensive staterooms. It was interesting to try but with only two of us we concluded that we certainly didn't need a 4A and we preferred to be lower than deck 8 (we're usually on deck 6 or 7) for convenience of getting to places above and below because we take the stairs.

Been on 17 DCL cruises. Never been in any other room than the one I paid for. Most of the time we sail in Oceanview rooms.

Same here -- been on 10 DCL cruises and never upgraded. We did get upgraded on HAL and Princess, but never on Disney. :(

So my ship is showing very few cabins available in my category. Do they have me temporarily in one since we are GTY or do they show everything available? We sail on March 4 and don't have our cabin assignment yet. We are deluxe oceanview stateroom and there are maybe four showing as open right now.

I know, right! So happy we decided to take advantage of it. We knew nothing about cruising or pricing, but it seemed like one of those deals you should not pass up. The problem is we are now addicted and just keep handing over the money! First world problem, right!?!
