Ever booked NOT the hotel you thought you booked?

Yep; happened 2 years ago when my DD was competing in a national championship in a midwestern state. We drove, and I had agreed to chaperone some of the kids for group activities, so we were booked at the same hotel as the team, it was the Whatever Chain-Northwest. Turns out I had booked us in at the Whatever Chain-Southwest.

We arrived really late after being caught behind a wreck on the interstate, so when we got there and the team bus was nowhere in sight, we got suspicious. We told the desk clerk which team we were with, and he proceeded to tell us they were not staying there. Ooops. He called around town for us and found out where we were supposed to be, and miracle of miracles, was able to move our booking for the rest of the days of the event, since I was supposed to be chaperoning the next day. We ended up staying at that "wrong" hotel the first night because it was 2am by then and we were dog-tired. (At breakfast we ran into some college athletes who had been on DD's team when they were younger, and they asked why we were not staying with the team. Yeah, about that ...)

Normally I make it a point to check the name of the street that the hotel is on to make sure it's the right one, but in this case they were both on the same street; which just happened to run from one end of town to the other.

I recently had a situation where I booked a hotel, 2 nights, a year in advance (daughter graduating grad school in Boston). Git to the hotel, they told me I canceled it in January. Turns out they went to charge my card and it was declined (it was stolen so I needed to replace it). They sent me an email but I missed it. Hotel was completely sold out (there was also back to back Red Sox games and the hotel was within walking distance). The guy at the front desk called around and the residence inn had a few rooms available for $800 a night before taxes and fees (the original hotel was $500 a night when I booked). So we walked over, booked a night, and changed our super cheap Amtrak tickets to the following night, $300 additional but cheaper than a second night at the hotel. 100% full train getting in at midnight.

Two different Hampton Inns on the same road about 4 miles apart in the Williamsburg, VA area. We stopped at the first one we encountered and were informed at the desk that we were at the wrong location. The guest services hostess said it wasn’t a rare occurrence.
