Ever accidentally over-tip?

I did just that today. I went for a facial this morning (it was lovely!) and the woman did a great job. The total was $50. I handed her a $50 and what I thought was a $10, but it turns out it was a $20. I couldn't figure out why she was all gushy and "thank-youing" me until I got halfway to my car and realized what I did. Now I'm worried she'll be expecting a big tip every time ! Luckily, it was a splurge thing to even get a facial. I've wanted to get one for a long time. It was a gift from DH from Christmas. He couldn't figure out where to get me a gift certificate so he gave me $50 in a card in my stocking with a note this past Christmas.

Sigh. I'm supposed to go get my hair cut/colored at this salon for the first time next week...I hope she isn't telling the stylists that I'm a big tipper.

Yes--I got all confused once an left a nearly 50% tip on an expensive meal. I realized it when I got to the hotel, but didn't have the heart to tell the kid I gave it to that it was a mistake. It was money well spent. We're regulars (Jimmy's Sushi--if you're ever in Anchorage, it's got great sushi). Since then we frequently have had add on items left off. Once I brought my visiting parents, and they only charged us for the entrees--all the drinks, desserts, and an appetizer were free. Plus, everyone is super friendly, though I can't say that was the tip since they always were.

Since we didn't have to turn in receipts under $25, I just stopped turning them in and started tipping $5 on the $3 breakfast

Yes, at my hairdresser once. Since he was familar with how much I usually tip, he asked if I made a mistake. I was too embarrased to tell him that I did and it was just before Christmas so I pretended that I meant to give it to him, after all, Christmas is coming up, I said.

I didn't really mind because he was the best hairdresser I ever had and it was really nice of him to point it out.

Mine also happened at a beauty salon. It was a new place when my kids were babies and I was tired a lot. I tipped $20 on a $20 haircut and couldn't figure out why the stylist seemed so appreciative until I got home and realized I was missing a $20.

Whenever I'm in the US I have to be obsessively careful about making sure I use the right bills!! Colourful money isn't just pretty, it makes life easier.

She works miracles with our entire family's hair (and we all have different textures) and makes sure my college-aged granddaughter gets in with another talented stylist if she can't do it herself (last minute call for sorority formal or such). She earns it, and then some.

I have also accidentally undertipped, and that haunts me worse than over tipping.

Totally read that as fiance and I was slightly weirded out that your significant other would make you turn in receipts for all of your purchases.

I generally over tip too...but never 40%.

To be fair though, it was a 90 minute treatment that included a facial, head/neck massage and a little arm/leg massage too. All for $50 (normally $60 but she was having a "sale" to build new clients). So in the end I still think it was worth $70 all together.

I did too, and thought it was totally odd that she gave you a "memo" rather than just talked to you about over tipping

Only time was when it was a big group and they automatically added 18%. I didn't realize it and tipped 20% more...
It was good service.... but not 38% good.

I've done it before and usually I just smile and hope that I made their day. Once it's done it's done so no need to worry about it. Look at the bright side of it instead.
