We are going on a European cruise in a few weeks and had a question. I have an American credit card that has a foreign transaction fee. Does anyone know if the charges from the ship for your gratuities and port excursions will incur the foreign transaction fee.
Thanks

I have an American credit card and go on European cruises and no fee was charged.

The amounts are debited by Celebration in Orlando USA.

So is there a transaction fee if paying with a European credit card...in Europe?
Maybe. Each credit card is different. There are US credit cards that have no foreign transaction fee. Others with anywhere from 2%-7% foreign transactions fees. I'd think that credit cards issued in Europe would also vary. You have to check out the parameters on your card agreement.

The question as highlighted above is, Does anyone know if the charges from the ship for your gratuities and port excursions will incur the foreign transaction fee. For an American CC.

All - Ship payments as quoted are passed from Celebration in Orlando in the USA and are a domestic USA transaction.

I use my USA $ credit card in Europe on the ship and no transaction fee. If I use a UK credit card fir the ship, depending on the CC I may get a fee of 2.99%.

Thank you for the quick response.

Hello - if your card charges foreign transaction fees yes you will have to pay a fee to settle your dollar onboard account. Some cards don't, as Princess Schmoo said, it does depend on the type of card you have.

I changed pounds into dollars a few weeks ago, trying to get a better deal in case we voted "out" so I didn't have to incur fees and an unattractive exchange rate on my Amex. We will see if my gamble paid off!!

Shmoo was not answering the same question you did. The poster she responded to was discussing a European credit card. And, there was nothing wrong with her response as she advised the poster to check with their bank. You are working so hard to negate her post, you didn't even read was she was responding to.

I think the important point is that any purchases or transactions that are settled through DCL (on the ship) will be settled in Orlando in USD. So, it sounds like if you bought an excursion for a European tour on board, it would be transacted in USD and settled through Disney's American bank.

Any person carrying a card that is not a USD card will have these charges treated just as if they were in the US. So, if your card would normally charge you a fee or a conversion fee for using it in the US or on a USD transaction, you will incur that same charge. Some people have cards designed to travel in the US, even though they don't live there which do not have fees or conversions and they will not be charged any different than if they were in the US.

Now, if you are in Europe and you get off the ship, your card will be charged in the local currency, even if the shop advertises it's prices in USD. You see, unless they are signed up by their bank to transact in USD, they would have to put through the transaction in their local currency.

So that should be clear as mud now. ;)
