Yikes, be careful those dodgy sites look very similar to the official site. When the ESTA started it was free, then they started charging $14 for it.
BTW, its usually instant, so make sure to print the confirmation page with your number on it. You wont need to show proof when you travel, as the information goes direct to the Airline and to US Homelands Security. You just need the number to retrieve it any-time in the next 2 years to edit any information on it.
Its valid for 2 years, so if you do it today 29 October 2015 you can travel multiple times to USA with it until 29 October 2017.
