Equal Marriage Supporters

Thought I'd post these religious flags that some folks fly:

There really are lots of religious folks that support equal status and rights for the LGBTQ community.

Nothing intended, I just didn't want to resize them all to conformity. :teeth:

Mmmm hmmm. Some of us are the family and friends of the family::yes::

I'm extremely late to the party, but I support same sex marriage. As a married mother of two who grew up in the bible belt and was a women's pastor for a few years, I'm not the typical gay rights advocate, but that is exactly what I am. Gays will have the right to marry in every state in the US one day, and it will be in my lifetime if I can help it.

I also support same sex marriage. I don't understand how we as a supposedly enlightened society can use religion to justify the perpetuation of prejudice against a group of people. Isn't that what El Qaeda does?

And thank you for your support. :goodvibes

We love family of the family. :teeth:

There's no "typical" equal rights supporter, darlin'.

Those that seek to deny us rights...they're the atypical ones. ;)

Hey, :welcome:

Like your ticker. ;)

Of course. I only meant that all odds were stacked against my being a supporter of gay rights. I come from a family that is not supportive and hail from a state that put a gay marriage ban on the ballot and 9 out of 10 houses had those blasted "marriage = 1 man + 1 woman" signs in their yards. I felt like I was the only person who voted against the ban (and I was nearly accurate as it passed, unfortunately).

If I can beat the odds, and teach my kids and so on, there is hope for true equality in the future. Sorry if I was not clear with my comments.

I see you're in FL, it's a hot issue there with the adoption and marriage issues both.
Hang in there, other states will lead the way for FL.

I sure hope so, I'm in TX. :lmao:

I support same sex marriage. If you love someone and want to share your life with them, it doesn't matter if you are a man or woman...the feelings are real.

It's wonderful to see the folks join this thread, regardless of when they found their way here! :teeth: ::yes::

Nice flags Uncle Remus!!!

Florida is a tough state. There is still major segregation in some of the cities, and oppression of minorities that extend beyond the frothing at the mouth homophobia that is rampant here.

Not sure how it happened, but it sure does make a lot of work for us to do. We'll do it though! The state is worth fighting for and so are the many thousands of non-bigoted people who live here. ::yes::

Well I was really talking about growing up and living in Ohio. I moved to FL two years ago. Unfortunately, they recently passed the same ban in FL so you are right about it being a hot topic here as well. I sure hope this ridiculousness isn't following me! :scared: I hope that folks will realize that denying basic rights to one segment of society means that everyone's rights are in jeopardy.

 We don't think it's following you! :scared: ;)

It's not just Ohio and Florida either, but it is good to see that other states are now moving toward acceptance of all peoples and not just a chosen few...

Oh no, honey. I understood your comments. I didn't make myself clear. :headache: I have a tendency to do that.

That was my ***-backwards way of thankin' you for your wonderfully supportive comments. And to tell ya'...those "other" folks...the ones who don't view gay rights as an important civil rights issue...those are the "weird" ones.

I am so sorry if I didn't make myself clear. My bad. My fault. I apologize.

My own town just passed a local ordinance refusing to allow or acknowledge same sex partnerships...as a reaction to our state trying to pass a Domestic Partnership Law. I've decided to move. ;)

I can't believe that. :( Now towns are getting in on the discrimination nonsense?

Are you really moving Goofyluver?

Guess the land of enchantment applies only to the chosen few. :confused3

As a response to a Domestic Partnership Bill being introduced in our state, my town approved a resolution opposing same sex partnerships. Our county commissioners stated that the Domestic Partnership legislation would erode the traditional family. These "gentlemen" painted the NMDPB as a stepping stone to same sex marriage, never acknowledging that such legislation applies to heterosexual couples as well.

FTR, the NMDPB passed the Senate and died in the House. There will be another vote in the House tomorrow.

Not all of NM is so "enchanted". :sad2: But, it was encouraging to see some of the support in other parts of the state. ::yes::

Yes, but by the same token many townships and cities are extending their family
benefits to those persons in domestic partnerships, much like some corporations.

That's what Orlando did. ::yes:: Even in the face of Amendment 2 the city of Orlando extends benefits to same gendered partners. ::yes::

Some countries have gone so much further with same sex marriages that now they are persuading heterosexual couples to go with the simpler version!! Could this be a route to wider acceptance in the US?

from the Daily Telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...al-couples-having-gay-civil-partnerships.html

Heterosexual couples in France are increasingly opting for "gay civil partnership ceremonies" rather than marriage to avoid the possibility of expensive divorces.
By Peter Allen in Paris
Last Updated: 7:50AM GMT 16 Feb 2009

Ninety per cent of "solidarity pacts" a year are now being made between people of the opposite sex, despite them being specifically designed for homosexuals, who are not formally allowed to marry in France.

The Civil Solidarity Pacts, or PACS according to their French language abbreviation, take just 15 minutes and can be performed by a court clerk.

Just as significantly, they can be ended with a single letter from either partner, without any claims on the other's money or property.

With divorce costs spiralling such a legal arrangement is particularly attractive to those potentially facing massive payouts if marriages fail.

Some 150,000 couples are PACS in France every year, of which around 135,000 of them are heterosexuals.

The PACS provide near-identical financial and administrative protection as formal marriages, including the possibility of providing joint tax returns and enjoying deductions.

French councils also treat PACSed couples like married couples when assigning benefits or accommodation.

The PACS also allow couple to bypass social and Church conventions, many of which are viewed as outdated by younger generations.

Yves Padovani, chief clerk at the Marseilles Palais de Justice, said :"It's a very efficient system, with people booking a slot in advance, and each ceremony taking a few minutes." Mr Padovani confirmed that the PACS were introduced 10 years ago so as to legalise unions between gay couples.

In 1999 around 6000 took place, but the annual figure is now 25 times that amount – and steadily rising.

The social stigma of being unmarried has now disappeared in France, with 43-year-old Justice Minister Rachida Dati, who is single, this year giving birth while in office.

Segolene Royal, the Socialist Party presidential candidate who unsuccessfully stood against Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007, is also an unmarried mother of four.

Civil partnerships were made legal in Britain in 2004, giving same-sex couples rights and responsibilities identical to those who have taken part in civil marriages.

This includes the possibility of hugely expensive divorces between any couple who are bonded by a civil partnership.

According to the first post, the "week" is technically over. But I fully support same sex marriage. And I post over there on that conservative thread *gasp*

There is "hope" for this country after all!!! ;)

Interesting perspective, isn't it?

While the Freedom to Marry Week campaign is over, the battle for equal marriage marches on.
And many conservatives support equal marriage for gays, the governors of Utah and California are two examples.

In fact, there are many conservatives who are actually gay. *gasp* ;)
Thank you for your support.

That's what Orlando did. ::yes:: Even in the face of Amendment 2 the city of Orlando extends benefits to same gendered partners. ::yes::

Didn't amendment 2 have really extensive language that basically banned any type of recognition of same-sex couples? Are there likely to be court challenges over the domestic partner benefits?

There were in MI when a similar amendment passed in 2004. SSDP benefits were ruled unconstitutional but universities (I don't know about local govts) have gotten around that by changing their policies in sly ways to include SSDPs without saying so.

Amendment 2 is so poorly written that it is wide open to interpretation. Mayor Buddy Dyer has said that he'll defend the city's position.

We'll have to see. What most people don't realize is that the amendment is as damaging to heterosexual couples as any gay couple, particularly the elderly who tend to form domestic partnerships as a means to protect their benefits without giving up the person they love. They are at risk now too, for all the same things as gay couples. When you look at elderly couples as realie that they have just had their ability to speak for one another in health care settings in particular, the whole situation becomes quite grim.
