Episode MMXIV: We Don't Say Goodbye, We Say Kwahirini (updated 2/28)

Interesting that I always have a hard time sleeping my first night in Disney (or anywhere). Thankfully, I get over it quickly.

I too like a safari early when it's not as congested and the drivers can stop a bit more. Feels more "real".

Trust me, spend enough time in Disney solo and you'll get over the awkwardness quickly.

Loving how much you're embracing the characters and the "little moments" that make Disney so special.

I saw American Adventure once, I haven't exactly made time for it since though. I'm not what you'd call a history buff by any stretch of the word!

Cute pic with Tigger, love the story behind it too!
Hehehe I always get a kick out of the Tim Horton's items in Disney!

But... at the end of my first day my step count was 21,909 and the mile reading was 9.17.

Whoa!! I've always wanted to count my steps at WDW. That's impressive!

I am hooked and enjoying your report. Is it easier to get around and in places (dining...attractions) as a one-person-group? Never thought about this before reading on the Boards.

I love all of the topiaries at Epcot for F+G!

And what a great morning start at AK! No better way to begin the day at AK than a ride on the safari. Better yet, Safari followed by a breakfast at Tusker House which is my fav character breakfast along with O'hana.

I agree about the topiaries! I think they are magnificent. They were starting to set up F&G when I was there... lots of little closed up booths that made me jealous for the people who would be there to witness it. I was there six years ago and didn't get a whole lot of time to soak it all in.

It was Brenda's review of Tusker House that made me add that ADR and I'm so glad I did!

Unfortunately, the "good night sleep" never really came... but I honestly didn't expect it to. It didn't seem to affect my energy level throughout the day, so that was good!

I'm just awkward in general. I should have outgrown this self-consciousness by now, but no such luck. Once I approached this PP photographer and saw how happy he was to take pictures of just me on his camera as well as my own, I got a LOT more comfortable with it. I have just as many pictures from previous trips; I'm just not IN any of them! Even when I went with my family, the majority of those pictures were ones I took with everyone else as the subjects. My sister commented that she was SO HAPPY to see me in the pics, and that made it so worthwhile to me :thumbsup2

Whoa!! I've always wanted to count my steps at WDW. That's impressive!

It's not something I would plan to do on every trip, but I'm really glad I took the time to see it.

Thanks!! I knew going in who I needed to get pics with for my two youngest babies, but the rest was more random. I came up with the Tigger connection when I was looking at the times guide :)

Tim's ♥ Definitely makes me giggle!

The crazy thing with the steps is that it's SO much higher than what I walk on a regular basis... but trying to get over 8,000 steps in when I'm home wears me out. I didn't have one moment of tiredness on this trip. :goodvibes

Thanks so much and welcome!!

It's easier in the sense that you can do what you want, whenever you want. And getting out the door in the morning is definitely easier. As far as the other stuff, I don't really think it would be any easier if I had one other person with me, because for the dining I was always at a two-person table. Several of the more popular attractions do have single-rider lines which, if I actually LIKED any of those rides, it would be easier that way.

The biggest thing for me is just being able to do things I really wanted to do on my timeframe.

It's been probably 15 years since I saw the American Adventure show! I'm not a big show person. I end up thinking of all the other things I could be doing and I don't enjoy it. I do love the 4d shows though; Muppets, Philharmagic, ITTBAB. I'm with you, I love ITTBAB - but I kill all bugs that come into my apartment. All of them. I let one go once so that he could go tell his friends that my place was a death trap but they kept coming.

I'm one of those people who feel like 9 a.m. is half the day too!! I love morning EMH because I feel like I get so much done! I'd definitely go to 7 a.m. EMH if they'd have them.

Tusker House looks like fun. I can't imagine ground beef for breakfast either.

Glad to see you sporting the pink MB; I chose pink this next trip because I think it's the prettiest band they have (IMHO). It looks good in photos! I used a green MB last trip and really liked it, but it was between blue and pink this trip and seeing the pink ones makes me think they just look like a richer color. Maybe I'll use blue in the fall.

sounds like a fun and, um, interesting safari ... great pic of the lions!

That must be a new change to the Tusker House Breakfast as we went last October and still got a picture with Donald outside ...hmmm

Glad you enjoyed you experience with the characters there and kept it "just for you" and also that you had some very positive CM interraction :goodvibes

Joining in!

I totally know what you mean about being awkward. I'm like that every day of my life! But it looks like you had a great time and I can't wait to see more.

That Cloud 9 feeling when you've let yourself enjoy the magic is absolutely the best. You earned it.:cloud9:

I like a good mix of things... I think it helps that I don't like a lot of the more popular thrill rides, so there is a good chunk of time I've eliminated by NOT wanting to go on them.

I would definitely join you at 7am!! Haha.

I loved my pink band!!! It's by far my favorite color, so I'm glad I went with it. When are you going back????

LOL.... it was interesting! I guess it never occurred to me that the animals could actually cross the path. Not sure why I thought that.

I'm guessing it was maybe a new thing at the beginning of the year, because everything I read talked about Donald greeting outside. I was a little upset at first, because I didn't realize he was going to be inside. My initial reaction was... well, the masks are cool and all, but they aren't Donald!

I didn't get any of the negativity from the CMs that I've been reading about. Every conversation I had was wonderful :thumbsup2

Day Two, Part Two

I am an animal lover. My answer to the "what would you do if you won the lottery" question is always "open my own animal shelter". And I love this park. Just walking around, soaking up the atmosphere makes me giddy.

If you didn't notice in my previous pictures, I'm sporting a very stylish Buffalo Zoo tshirt. I bought this shirt specifically to wear at DAK. We have baby polar bears at our zoo and they were the CUTEST things ever. I posted pics on FB that day with the caption, "Even Disney doesn't have baby polar bears!" Hehe. I want to keep one. I don't believe that malarkey about them being mean. I think that's just how the people in charge keep you from stealing them and taking them home with you.

After my awesome breakfast with Donald and company, I decided to hop on the Wildlife Express to take a ride over to Rafiki's Planet Watch. I knew there were meet-and-greets here as well as the opportunity to possibly watch a veterinary procedure.

My first order of business was meeting Rafiki and giving a shout-out to one of my nieces:

The two girls in front of me were wearing the coolest shirts... one said "Hakuna" and the other said "Matata". Then they made a Rafiki sandwich. If it wasn't weird to take pictures of strangers, I totally would have!

I walked over to the area where they perform the veterinary procedures. They had one scheduled, but when I looked through the window all I could see were needles. And I immediately remembered WHY I never pursued a veterinary career. I didn't stick around long enough to find out what they would be doing... I was honestly afraid of passing out. A whole bunch of needles, all lined up in a row. My skin crawls just thinking about it!

So instead I took a peek at the culinary delights this nice lady was whipping up for the animals:

When I went on the backstage tour back in 2009, they explained how all the animals had a "cookbook" and that everything was measured very precisely. I thought it was cool that Rose (the lady in the picture) was preparing everything in plain view. I tried really hard to think of something to ask her, but I couldn't come up with anything.

Doesn't this look yummy??

It's very clear I could never do anything even closely related to veterinary work. But I wonder if I could handle living in Disney World and preparing gourmet meals for the animals?

Time for another M&G! I've had some really good luck with Chip and Dale on my WDW trips. I have some great pictures from when I was a nanny, and also some really nice ones from my family trip. A couple years ago, my sister and her gang took a trip to The World. It was the spring before they were moving away and I gave my youngest niece some money and asked her to pick out a stuffed animal for me. She choose Chip and Dale and they've been sitting on a shelf on my bookcase ever since. This particular niece had a very specific, emphatic answer when I asked her who her favorite character was... if she hadn't, I would done the Chip and Dale shout-out for her (even knowing that she wouldn't understand why!) But I couldn't let the opportunity pass, so one of my other nieces got a "hi" from the world's cutest chippies:

It was starting to get hot out, so I didn't hang around, even though I would have liked to spend some time at the Affection Section. So I started walking back to the train station. The Lion King is probably my favorite Disney movie. I love so many of them and they all have such distinct things about them that make them great, so actually picking one is hard. But if pressed, I would say Lion King. So I will end Rafiki's Planet Watch with this picture. I'm fairly certain I took this picture there, but it's entirely possible I did not. But it's so simple and it makes me smile :goodvibes

I had planned a longer update, but photobucket had other ideas. Happy Disney Movie DVD Release Day!!! I'm hoping for a double feature for my upcoming birthday. And if you haven't seen it yet, google "man sings Let it Go". It's a video of a guy singing Adele Dazeem's famous song... but doing it as 21 different Disney and Pixar characters. It's absolutely incredible!

Haha, of course there is the polar bear on the Maelstrom, lol.

I've been to Planet Watch a grand total of once. I was so bored on that particular excursion that I never returned. One of these days though, I think I will just because it will probably feel entirely new to me. I do like some of the unique meets that can happy there.

Adele Dazeem :lmao: Still cracks me up.

I have seen that video (in fact I posted it on FB too). I loved it and totally almost broke down a but when "Mickey" chimed in.

It's not my favorite part of DAK, but I love looking at the giant mural (which, apparently, I didn't take any picture of :confused3) The big draw for me this time was the veterinary thing and then I chickened out. I would say it's one of the few things in all of WDW that is truly geared more toward children.

I DID tear up when ::MickeyMo came on!!

I do appreciate that they have the veterinarian and food preparations out in view so people can see as it is interesting

I love all the back stories you give about various characters matching up with various nieces/nephews

I saw that video - thought he did a really good Goofy. I always marvel at people who can change voices so quickly. Saw the one with the woman who would sing it as different pop starts and changing between them was really cool (her Celine Dion and Julie Andrews were really good)

Day Two, Part Three

As I've been reading other trip reports, I've started to realize that the lions on safari have a tendency to be.. umm... lazy. LOL. So I thought I would share this picture from my 2009 trip. It's not super crisp because of the zoom on my little point-and-shoot, but apparently it's not as common as I assumed it was when I took it:

I just want to brush his hair!

Since we're talking about animals... if you feel like getting your heart tugged on, check out this link. You will cry. If you don't, I don't even wanna know. I had tears streaming down my face as I was reading it to my mom on the phone. Clickety-click right here.

Recovered? Yeah, me either.

Ohhh... it has also come to my attention that the 50th anniversary of "It's a Small World" will be celebrated in all Disney parks.

ON.
MY.
BIRTHDAY.

I want to go!!!! IASM is the quintessential Disney ride for me. My grandma absolutely loved it and I think it's amazing. The song doesn't even begin to grate on my nerves like it does for some people. It simply makes me happy. *sigh* I am now trying to come up with a way to incorporate this into my birthday bash at work. I wonder if I can get everyone to agree to sing IASM instead of "happy birthday"???

Okay, enough jibber jabber. On with the show!!

After I left Rafiki's Planet Watch, I started wandering aimlessly again. There were a couple things that I absolutely HAD to do and I was trying to figure out the best way to arrange these things.

As I was wandering, I came across this little cart/shop. This is Justus:
39f8add6-80ac-48f0-82c4-faaad6b92230_zps201a30bc.jpg

I was trying REALLY hard to remember to write down people's names. I was having such a great time that even knowing I would never see these people again, I thought it was important for them to not just wind up being random strangers. This way, they were specific people who did specific things to make me smile.

Anyway, there were two little boys who were very intrigued with what Justus was making and he wanted to show us his creation. I included a very specific disclaimer on FB that this turned out looking kind of threatening and that is not at all how the encounter went!! I just happened to press the button at an odd time.
c924c5b3-3b68-459f-9ee2-4364a2ffe51f_zps3d8bd7e1.jpg

I could just tell how proud he was of his work and I wanted to capture that. It's easy to have a shop with hand-carved items. Actually seeing the people who are creating these objects makes it special. Disney ♥

There were some really cool items for sale, including wooden spoons with animals carved into the handle. I came very close to buying some but passed, mainly because I had a vision of using it and breaking it and crying. Not sure why I didn't at least take a picture. :rolleyes2

I decided to take a stroll through the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Before I left, I asked my two youngest younglings who their favorite characters were. My niece's response will be revealed later, but my nephew very emphatically answered with.... BATMAN!

Oy. I understand, cuz I love him too. But it wasn't even the RIGHT comic book company. LOL. Of course, that was followed by me asking him what his favorite ride at Disney was. (I was expecting "Pirates of the Caribbean".)

The answer... "Ummm... my favorite ride at Disney is the Scooby Doo ride at Six Flags!"

:faint:

Okay Benny, these bats are for you!

21c88844-8e13-4bd9-92b8-4ddbc280dc9f_zps050d3fe7.jpg

And, because that looks NOTHING like a bat OR Batman... I guess we'll go with the completely fake one:
dfcad9f4-ce22-4de8-9b42-8fddafd50c58_zps72d0d943.jpg

When I was younger, my neighbors had an in-ground swimming pool that was backed up by a large wooded area. We would sometimes be swimming at night and bats would be flying over our heads, wings outstretched. That was significantly less creepy to me than that first picture is.

The next couple pictures are some of my favorite touches within DAK. I read about the significance of the prayers flags in my Hidden Magic of Disney World book. There is something so simple and hopeful about this and I just love the idea, regardless of the fact that it's not my own belief system that it's based off of. People who don't "get" Disney consider this type of thing to be fake. I, on the other hand, consider it to be creative and imaginative and educational.

I win :thumbsup2

I finished up my trek marveling at the tigers. There was a CM who explained that tigers are the only big cat who enjoy water, so as part of their enrichment there is a swimming area for them to play in.

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur. Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr purr purr:

Bazinga!

Have a happy weekend!! :wave2: I have some birthday festivities going on today! Yay!!! It's a little early, but some of my friends will be out-of-town in a couple weeks so I roped them into plans for today. Going to the Melting Pot for the first time and I'm ridiculously excited!

And if you're following March Madness... good luck to your team and your bracket! Unless your teams winds up crossing paths with my Syracuse Orange!!! ;) I've been glued to the TV and even went down to catch open practice on Wednesday. We're hosting some of the second and third round games, so that was fun. I would have gone to the games, but well... I kinda took a little trip somewhere else and couldn't completely justify spending more money.

It is really cool to see it! And if it gives someone a spark to say, "hey I think I want to do that!" then even better!!! :goodvibes

Thanks... some of them were random and I wish I had a story for all of them, but I'm just so happy that I decided to do it. It made is so special for me... and for them, too! I send a package to the two younger ones with a couple things in it and copies of the pictures. My niece's favorite thing was the pictures!

I marvel at people's talent. How do you learn to do that?! I can't sing as myself let alone as someone else!

Great updates from AK!

Your stories about how the animal food are prepared reminded me of a behind the scenes tour we took here at the Smithsonian National Zoo during a Snore and Roar sleepover at the zoo for DD. For our behind the scenes tour, we had selected to visit the Animal Commissary and saw the same binders full of recipes for each animal. Pretty cool stuff.

I don't think I've ever noticed the craft station/cart that you came across back there by Rafiki's Planet Watch and we go there very often! Cool!

Happy Birthday!

Yes indeed, the lion actually moving is a rarity.

OMG how incredibly sweet was that zoo story. And just one more reason to love giraffes.

You do realize that your nephew must now be kicked out of the family right? :rolleyes2

Well done capturing and sharing the little gems that make Ak and Disney in general such a unique and wonderful place and NOT Six Flags. But then again, Six Flags was a nice segue into the wonderful prayer flags.

I am caught up on all my subbed TRs. (I think) and started looking for a new one to sub to.

I love readying about solo trips. I did one myself several years ago and it was very liberating.

I am glad that your new diagnosis of MS did not give you any trouble during your trip.

I, too, hate to drive so woo hop to 5 days without driving. :cool1:

Looking forward to reading more about your trip.

Yes, your lion pic is a rare wonder! Looks like a L'Oreal commercial! :lmao: I have one pic of the lion up and roaring from about 2012 or 2011. I figure I've seen my share of the Disney lion for life.
Iasw is a real favourite of mine too, so cool that you share a birthday ;) hehhee I hope you can get to celebrate it, and in case I miss is, happy birthday!
Or should I say...

"It's a world of laughter
A world of tears
It's a world of hopes
And a world of fears..." Hehehe

Batman! :lmao: I love that you got pictures of bats for him (in the absence of Scooby Doo.)

Love the tigers, I could watch them all day!

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards

Happy belated birthday Sue! :bday: I hope you enjoy your celebration and festivities!

Ok, I have a whole lotta catching up to do... like back to when you arrived at the airport and time stopped! That's exactly how I feel often.

Getting to WDW let alone a park before night fall is super amazing. I'm stuck in the 3 hr time difference and no direct flights dilemma. Is Epcot your favorite park or did this just work out to start at Epcot for other reasons. Random question I know. I am always interested in how brighter minds than mine work. I just figure we'll hit up any park that's still open when we arrive so late.

Ha ha Vitamin N (Nature) brilliant!\

Ahhh your first "hadn't done before" attraction was Turtle Talk with Crush. I haven't seen that since Em was little but I still remember the interaction with Crush and the kids. Definitely Disney hit a home run with the technology, theming, and characterization.

Ok, can I just have one of those "0.0 Miles" shirts. How funny considering how many women were probably wearing their Princess half shirts! :lmao:

Congrats on your Beauty & the Beast Broadway tickets. We've seen the stage production of that show here and it was completely awesome. The live musical score and everything about it just made my cry tears of complete joy!

Ok, gotta say, you are brave to try all the sodas at Club Cool. I tried a few once and wasn't thrilled so I had no desire to be bold and expand my soda horizons. ;)

You and Duffy! Thanks for sharing. What a sweet photo! :goodvibes

As for your AK day, your drama on the safari was aptly said. What a great start to your day. Despite that rough first night of sleep. Often my first night is the roughest no matter how exhausted I am. You would think it would be automatic pass out!

Ahhhh, so now I know the translation for your TR title. I love that - "go well". I noticed your Buffalo zoo shirt before you mentioned it, I was going to say (still am I suppose) that is was perfect for your AK day.

I just booked Tusker House last night since I just couldn't pass up a return trip there to see those adorable characters in their safari outfits. I'm not a fan of just standing outside for a photo without Donald. They must have changed that. How odd.

Oh my gosh, that photo of the giraffe saying good-bye to the zoo keeper was so touching. I saw that the other day and it was sobs time. What an amazing photo that showed that connection between those two.

Ha ha soft kitty... Bazinga... Love the Big Bang Theory reference. So perfect for that stripped version of a soft kitty.

Enjoy your day!

first off, Happy Belated Anniversary of It's a Sue's World ... aka, your birthday!

Nice Big Bang Reference!

Hope you enjoyed the Melting Pot. We love eating there, though the meals feel like they take 4 hours and they have to roll us out of there ... wait, that's not really a bad thing is it?
