***Epcot Food And Wine Festival Info 2008***

Just wondering if any of you fine folks have actually attended any EEs or Signature Dinners and if so, could you tell the rest of us about them? Not looking for a full-blown review (unless you want to!) but just some general information and your impressions / opinions. It might be really helpful for the rest of us who are thinking of attending one if Skull and Bones ... er, I mean Disney, declassifies their program details.

Thanks in advance because I won't be back on the boards for another 12 hours or so ... stupid firewalls!

Never mind my previous question. Just re-read first page. Why oh Why 2 days notice??????

When we first started attending EE's, it was held at the World Showplace in a draped off area from PFTS, now its held at the Odyssey in more recent years. Personally, I think it was nicer at WS, but that's JMO. I tried finding some of our old menus...of course never can when you NEED them! :rotfl:

The Australian one we went to was definitely the one that stands out the most to me-for good and bad reasons. The food was amazing-there was Emu potstickers and lobster sushi that I can recall for hor's doeuvres (there was more, but the memory has faded). We were given champagne with the hor's doeuvres as well. The chef (or ONE of the chefs) was Andrew Ormsby from Tucker in Dallas, TX. Dinner consisted of sea bass, lamb, scallops, quail and a few other goodies (there were a lot of courses to the meal), but all had a distinctively Australian flair to them. Penfold's was the only vintner that evening.

My impression: The food was not given its due time. What I mean is that the chef (or chefs) were introduced in the beginning and then that was it for the rest of the night-not another peep from them. On a foodie level I was sooooo disappointed by that. I really wanted to hear about the preparation of the food or what the chef's inspiration was for the dishes. Didn't happen. As far as Penfold's, the guy that was there was not actually from the winery, but he was there representing them-I can't recall his name, but he was some kind of wine critic I believe. This guy would not shut up the entire time we were there-he talked right up to the time we were walking out the door. For a time he was interesting and informative, but after hearing him drone on for two hours about the glory of all things Penfold's, I wanted to chuck my wine at him. I noticed a lot of people wondering when they should eat because you know, I guess normal people figured it was impolite to be chowing down while this guy was talking, but it became obvious there would be no pause to his Penfold's pitch, so the masses started eating. We also heard the man go on and on about Penfold's Grange and how it was the holy grail of all wines-well, let me be the judge of that (and let me tell you, it wasn't all that IMO).

Things we learned from that EE: We loved the food (just wish it had been given equal time to the wine). We never again chose to go to an EE where there was only ONE vintner present, because as DH said, it seemed like nothing other than a huckster session for Penfold's. I know they are there to promote their wine, but it overshadowed the entire experience. We definitely love EE and had a blast...also, you WILL be hammered when you leave. We never even drank 1/2 of what was put in our glasses and both DH and I were pretty far gone. I think its definitely an event to try once if you can. Just make sure you pick something you will enjoy as far as cuisine style and the wine.

Here are some of the pictures I took. The guy with the glasses on in the 1st pic was the one there on behalf of Penfold's. My pics are actually backwards when I loaded them up...so the hor's doeuvres are at the bottom and then goes through the dinner.

Thank you for you review KeepMovingForward! My husband and I have been wondering about these ourselves. It's great to have a visual!

Thank you for the beautiful pictures. Wow! People got really dressed up! Do they suggest a dress code?

Haven't done an EE but I did three signature meals (one was not a dinner but a lunch) last year. One was the regular Jiko wine dinner which takes place every month, not just during the Food and Wine Festival. The other two were the Jiko signature luncheon (I love Jiko) and the Signature Dinner at the Seas Salon.

Although I have menus and photos of the food for the lunch and the Salon dinner, I don't have time to post reviews and probably won't have time until next week but I do like these events and will do more if I can fit them in on one of my four trips to F&W 2008.

I can't recall exact wording for their dress code for this event, but it was pretty much the same as V&A's...sport coat for gentlemen and cocktail attire for ladies.

Thank you keepmovingfoward (Ps love your screenname;) )

Do people usually get dress the same for signature evenings as they do for the ee?

Subscribing - I need 11 PFTS tickets

groverdog,

There aren't really tickets and maybe you know that already. Sorry if you do.

You will call the telephone number that is provided on August 25, or WHENEVER, and make reservations for the date you want to attend PftS. Then that evening when you check in at the podium they will put a wrist band on you and all those attending.
At least that's the way they have been doing the procedure the last couple of years.
When you do call in for reservations they will bill your credit card immediately for the total amount. So that would be ~$135 X 11 !!!

WOW! The pix of EE were certainly engaging. Now I'm torn. Was gonna book PFTS and maybe one other event. This is our first time. But how do you all choose? So many opportunities yet such limited resources. If you could only do two events, which would they be? Should I scrap PFTS and choose something else? I guess I'm looking for total bang for the buck plus a really unique experience.

Thanks.

We have done the Jiko Signature dinner in 2006 and the Todd English one at Blue Zoo last year. Both were awesome and lasted a long time. The chefs spoke about the food quite a lot and the wine was flowing. :rotfl: We also did the Spirited Ball in 2005 and unlike others we had a blast. People generally get pretty dressed up for these events. I remember the Spirited Ball I had a cocktail dress on and DH a suit. Some had tuxes and ball gowns. This one couple got on the bus (to take you behind the back way to the American Adventure) and they had on jean shorts!!! For a "ball." You should have seen their faces when they saw how everyone else was dressed. :scared1: I would have died of embarrassment! They do tell you what the dress code is on the phone. People tend to dress business casual or cocktail party dress for PFTS. Some still show up in non dress shorts, bb hats and t-s though. F&W Pairings are casual since they are during the day at Epcot. We have yet to do an EE. I would love to do the champagne one!

I couldn't agree with you more Lily. My party of 4 adults has already made some great reservations off site in Orlando and Winter Park. We will be in Disney from 9/24 - 9/30. I decided I won't cry if they don't do the PFTS the first weekend, we will all save that money and go watch the Bocuse d'Or for free. They've played that competition footage on Food Network before and it is quite interesting. I also agree with another poster in feeling "jerked around".

If the date does turn out to be around Aug 25th, I'm going to assume Disney has decided F&W is for day tripping locals. Nothing wrong with that, but when you're coming from some distance offering reservations 1 month and 1 day from F&W opening is absurd. They've been selling hard tickets like crazy for special events many months in the future. Meanwhile, I'm glad I've already made some reservations for a couple of special dinners at WDW, as well as the usual ones. People are going to start going ahead and booking a sure thing rather than waiting to see what may be offered. I'm also going to get busy and read up on a couple off site restaurants we'd like to try.

My new plan is to watch some of the Bocuse D'Or Competition, sample the food at some booths during the week, and call it square.

Would you recommend doing PFTS and is there any type of dress code for it? Is it worth the cost?
