Does any one besides myself get totally annoyed going by "Canada" at the World Showcase at Epcot and feel that it does not represent our country. The East Coast, the Arctic, the prairies and the West Coast are totally ignored. I do not think Canada is just a few totem poles and old Quebec. Also, the Canadian staff no so little about our own country nor are they very friendly!!!

The CM's are friendly, maybe not that outgoing. I find the CM's in other countries about the same. No, it is not representative of our country, a Timmies added to it would improve it!

While I agree that the Maritimes are not very well represented, I believe the old building that is represented there is the Chateau Laurier ( from Ottawa ) rather than the chateau Frontenac ( in old Quebec )... Not that the two buildings look all the different style-wise.

I've found our fellow Canadians there to be quite friendly and have chatted a couple of them up.

i used to find the MOVIE to be just awful and made the whole country out to be rural logging land. ( Granted, we HAVE some of that, but not ALL of it ). I like the new Martin Short version. :happytv:

...and Mexico is not just a Aztec Pyramid and France is not just an Eiffel tower. You get the idea.

They are all just as stereotypical and I think that they have to be. Reason being that they need to be recognized as the country they are representing immediately.

BC is represented by the Butchart Gardens reproduction.

Not a lot to represent Atlantic Canada (which is not the same as the Maritimes) but I wouldn't expect each and every aspect of the country to be featured in physical representations in the Pavillion. All in all, it's pretty decent I think.

I agree though, a Timmie's would be awesome! :)

I understand it is hard to incorporate all of Canada's diverse features but may some pictures on the walls of LeCellier and the gift shop of the various Canadian provinces and territories would be nice. Also, maybe a replica of the CN tower, the Bluenose or even our loonie would be nice as well!

My husband tells me that this rather peculiar collection to represent Canada was the result of corporate sponsors stepping forward to fund the Canadian pavilion when Epcot opened. He says it wasn't a Canadian government initiative, and thus had no overall mandate to reflect the diversity of the country.
That said, I think the gardens are beautiful renditions of Beacon Hill Park/Butchart Gardens in Victoria.
DD10 thought the outfits on the CMs were lame, however. And she also thought the entire place didn't reflect the Canada she knows.

While the outside might not best represent the Provinces of Canada, at least they upgraded the movie because the old one was horrible.

their outfits i was told by one fo the canadian cm's represent turn of the century clothing....altho i dont remember women at the turn of the century doing logging...but i digress! lol

teh sponsor thing makes all the sense in the world. and while we havent caught the new version, i personally dislike the fact that they represented atlantic canadians as a bunch of fisherman hicks who barely can speak intelliglbly(is that a word? lol).

When we were at the kidcot station a guest asked the CM the population of Canada. He was waaaaaaaayyyy off. Think he said something like 10 million. I corrected him and felt bad later in case it embarrased him. But honestly a college aged citizen should know basic info about their country.

Nope, it's not just you. We've been doing our very best to avoid it, because it makes us annoyed too (and that's not the kind of feeling you're supposed to have in WDW).

hmmm, sounds pretty lame

When I think Canada I think of I think of some great inventions, great political figures such as the creator of the health care system we have today Tommy Douglas, natural beauty like in my own territories Kluane National Park, other amazing Canadians like Terry Fox.....just off the top of my head :)

This topic comes up about once a year and I write a similar reply every time. I really don't understand why so many people want our country to be represented by a coffee and donut shop, even if it is a sort of Canadian cult.

I think a lot of people may be missing the point of World Showcase. It's not to provide an accurate modern day representation of the countries around the lagoon, but rather to replicate the tourist picture postcard idea of the places and histrical architechure and landmarks. I guarantee you that natives from each country complain about their own pavillion and say that the costumes are nothing at all like what they wear at home, the movies are old and the architecture looks nothing like the house they live in. I worked in the Canadian pavillion a number of years ago and I heard this from all my fellow cast members from the other countries about their pavillions.

Think about going into the the Germany, Norway, or France pavillions. Are you upset that they aren't exactly like it would be if you got on a plane today and visited each of those places? Probably not. You probably like the Bavarian village (which is only representative of a particular region of Germany not the whole country), or the castle and wooden buildings (whch aren't what modern people live in in Norway), or the Parisian streets of the past.

What would be interesting or unique about building the pavilion to look like Toronto? Or tearing out the Mexican pyramid and replacing it with a modern day Mexico city in miniature? How about replacing the American Adventure with a Walmart since that's where many Americans really spend a lot of their time?

For me, I think the pavillion is the right version for Epcot. Epcot is a theme park and it tries to be both give people a flavour of the place while being entertaining at the same time. Buying Tim Horton's coffee and doughnuts under a mini-CN Tower would just not be interesting as a theme park experience or compell people to see more. Almost all areas of Canada are represented in the pavillion in some small way, except the prarie provinces. It's too bad they removed the Boutique store from the upper level since it removed any life from that particular area, but I still think the Canadian pavillion is one of Epcot's best. It's one of the few where you can get deep enough back into it to be totally surrounded by the environment.

Just my opinion, and I know I'll be in the minority.

P.S. If you think lumberjack shirts are bad, think about what the German male CM's wear or the Norwegian puffy shirts and vests. Lumberjack shirts with pants/shorts aren't really that bad by comparison.

Yes, I think the Canadian pavilion is very stereotypical and not a good representation of what Canada is really like, but I don't blame them for designing it the way it is. I think to make it work they had to choose one "image"...just like all the other countries. One image, one time period. Can you imagine what it would look like had they included the things such as the CN tower, skyscrapers, wheat fields, a harbour with fishing boats, skyscrapers, a highway through the middle, glaciers & snow, etc? Since Canada is so diverse, I bet the Imagineers has a difficult time narrowing down the "look" of the pavilion.

Personally, I didn't really analyze it too much but my wife did. Then as we walked around I asked her " do you think the German youth walk around in leiderhosen all day". Point being - it is a traditional representation as seen through a tourist's eyes. When you think France, you think Eiffel Tower etc. I don't really get offended by our uniform or any of the other stuff. I just laugh with it/at it because I know who I am and where I live and that's all that matters.

IIRC, the lumberjacket was very popular teen clothing back in the 80's(can anyone remember the term 'stonerjacket') so it isn't that far removed from mainstream society.

Is half of the Canadian Pavillion still empty, which looks really bad. What's with that? :confused3

Amen to that. And frankly, I'd rather make my own coffee ;)

Personally, I just wish the band playing in Canada actually WAS Canadian :)

Brilliant post Fellowship9798!

LOVE IT! :lmao: That's how I feel about the swirling rumour of Tim Hortons.
